Lyrics
Comin' in on a wing and a prayer
Comin' in on a wing and a prayer
With our one motor gone
We can still carry on
Comin' in on a wing and a prayer
What a show, what a fight
Boys, we really hit our target for tonight
How we sing as we limp through the air
Look below, there's our field over there
With our one motor gone
We can still carry on
Comin' in on a wing and a prayer
Comin' in on a wing and a prayer
Comin' in on a wing and a prayer
With our full crew on board
And our trust in the Lord
We're comin' in on a wing and a prayer

Flight Sergeant Rusty Waughman and his crew sang this song as they returned safely from their missions. When Rusty and his crew joined 101 Squadron RAF they were not thrilled with the plane they were assigned: a battered old Lancaster named G - George. But their dislike of the plane soon evaporated for G - George quickly proved herself to be a lucky Lancaster : withstanding many flak hits and getting them home safe even with engines blown out. She even got them through the dreaded 1944 Nuremberg raid where Bomber command suffered it's worst casualties. And each time they came into land the crew sang "on a wing and a prayer". At the time of writing Rusty is still alive age 98.

There were children burned up alive with their parents in some of those "targets" (on all sides) and that is also a memory (like this great song) that should be preserved too. I say this as ... an observer, as one who believes that Jesus really is the incarnation of God, and a citizen of some other place in a different realm. It was a horrible time in history and I sense sadly enough that the worst is yet to be. Will "we" never learn?

I am glad to hear that, Ivan. Consider this: Bomber Command aircrews suffered a high casualty rate: of a total of 125,000 aircrew, 57,205 were killed (a 46 percent death rate), a further 8,403 were wounded in action and 9,838 became prisoners of war. Therefore, a total of 75,446 airmen (60 percent of operational airmen) were killed, wounded or taken prisoner. it was more dangerous in the air, than on the ground. US 8th Air Force lost over 26,000 men. An additional 28,000 men became prisoners of war. Aircraft losses were also grim: 10, 561 planes of varying types were shot down, 4754 of those were B-17 heavy bombers. Maybe you can tell your comrade Putin that the Soviets did not win the war single handedly. From the United States alone they received help totaling $11.3 billion, or $180 billion in today’s currency. That paid for: 400,000 jeeps & trucks 14,000 airplanes 8,000 tractors 13,000 tanks 1.5 million blankets 15 million pairs of army boots 107,000 tons of cotton 2.7 million tons of petrol products 4.5 million tons of food 2 million tons of aluminium 150.000 tons of medical supplies.
