The Current State of Philippine Cinema

Ойын-сауық

In this video, I'm going to talk about what happened to Philippine Cinema. On why our movies seems to be a copy of a copy of a copy. Is it because of the lack of
creativity of our local writers, directors and producers? Or because of Us, the audience?

I think every nationality has a different personality towards the film industry. Sadly, we filipinos got one of the short ends of the stick, that our taste in movies is quite bland (or at least most of the filipino audiences). My take from this is that the Philippine Cinema takes profit from two sides: The indies that are more globally friendly, and the recycled movies that stays local and not global.

ive always wanted more from our Philippine Cinema and this industry. i want us to have more of medical drama, animation, crime, and historical themed rather than those of cliche rom-coms. my heart aches when there's an indie movie that i want to watch but theyre not on cinemas. i wanna be able to watch a Filipino movie worth my time and money. im young and inexperienced, but i know that we dont receive such mediocre, half assed, cliche films.

Lmao and compete for a market that leans onto Hollywood, Bollywood, South Korean, and European works? No, thank you. Philippine cinema should focus domestically. We could maybe tap the Southeast Asian market (hiring SEA actors like Mario Maurer was genius) but that's about it. We should establish a local foothold first before going global.

The arts here in the Philippine is under appreciated... Fine arts, broadway, musicals, of course the films. Heck, even celebrities or 'artists' here are applauded not for their skills and their craft, but for their looks. Award-giving bodies here are overseen. No grammy or academy worthy equivalents. As long as the studios here keep making cheap movies, and actual talents keep getting underpaid and unappreciated by the industry and citizens themselves with low standards, the state of Philippine arts, including cinema, will stay the same. It will take a whole generation for it to be better I think, just like South Korea.

At this point, I have given up on it. I don't plan on pursuing a career here. There are rare gems. But given the emotional maturity and range of the average Filo, I doubt taking risks with compelling storytelling would work. Our people either want something to laugh at or get hormonal over and that's it. Give them a well-written crime story or a psychological thriller and that would go over their heads. Perhaps it's best to let it stay as such and just turn elsewhere. That's what I did.

Unlike the following, I rather stick to Erik Matti movies or Mikhail Red and indie films than this lazy, apathetic, shoddy, and unfunny rom-coms. And Vice Ganda movies are just so inevitable... The non-mainstream films are the pinnacle of what really films should be at least for me but sadly, most Filipinos seem to look to the other side. We can blame piracy, lack of creativity, trying to be Hollywood. But for me is the audience or us. Those who appreciated what film should look and feel are very rare these days. We can talk about good stories and a good director but you can't push them to love what you loved. Some compared it to Hollywood in terms of VFX or the quality of the film. I do agree with them. That's why the problem lies in the audience. The so-called true cinema/non-mainstream film is diminishing throughout the world, not only in the Philippines. At the of the day, the producers will stick to what works for them coz they are one who throws the money. And that makes me sad.

Explore new genres such as superhero, action, adventure, true horror and gore without a single scene of comedy. Also try musicals, history movies, mystery, science fiction, and more! Philippine Cinema HAD a lot of potential if it weren't for the addiction to romance, comedy, and drama. This is the number one reason why I stuck to Marvel Studios, DC Comics, etc.

DEAR STAR CINEMA, TO THE FILIPINO FILM INDUSTRY. WE NEED FILMS LIKE THESE. From Himala, Oro Plata Mata, Manila in the Claws of Light, Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon, Magnifico Tanging Yaman and Anak to Heneral Luna and Felix Manalo. In 1998, GMA Films had produced Jose Rizal film which had been one of the the biggest, impactful and critically acclaimed film which inspired generations by generations unlike some Star Cinema films today that should be expected to be quality, impactful and historical as it is. But they had been always producing on having the same cheap, cliche, pabebe and mainstram low outcome. And oh by the way compelling toxic loveteams are always be the downfall of the Filipino cinema and entertainment industry. We need Filipino films that would reach globally. Read the story post of Direk Matti about the State of the Filipino films today last 2018. p,s. Imagine having a new film about Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. Imagine. 🇵🇭🇵🇭✨✨

I don't know how to put it into words but this video is incredibly depressing and incredibly well done :) I think the problem also lies in the audience. It's become a vicious cycle of rom-coms and comedies. Like you said, the studios know we'll keep watching them anyway. This is why film, and art in general, should be taught better in school-not just merely talking about them and memorizing their titles.

I agree with all the topic you said. Movie industry is still a business industry. They don't want to lose money. But how about Hollywood films? They also produced indie films but those indie are popular despite from less advertising, e.g. All A24 films, Searchlight Pictures films, and Neon. So why, filipino films aren't thriving. The problem is the lack of audiences attention from those local indie because of the ripple effect from the trash local mainstream movies. It affected the indie films. Pinoy movie industry are afraid of risk. They don't want to explore new genre, they love rom-com or action comedy. There's no artistry. Popular films doesn't mean it has to be CGI heavy or VFX. We are behind that, we have a long shot to achieve it. The besy option is great storytelling. To have an example, Slumdog Millionaire has a low budget but gross over 300 million dollar worldwide, no CGI effect of something. It has only a good storyelling. Directors and Producers should do that. In 2023, we have Vivamax which it has a erotic heavy movie without story which added the audiences point of view of "Filipino Movie are trash tagala". They kept on producing that kind of films. Some people are exposed from Netflix, Disney+, HBO max and because of that, consumer has a standard in terms of quality. We should start to change. A little bit experiment can't make a change within a night. Great storytelling and good marketing can be a good start.

In my opinion. You cant really blame the audiences when it comes to their decision to not watch a certain film. Producers and studios should also build hype around their film before its release. In short, the film should be ubiquitous in order to catch the attention of the audiences. Remember that its also a business so i think studios should find ways for their films to make money and not just wait for a miracle to happen. Just like Hollywood does with their films all the time. Also non mainstream films should consider hiring mainstream actors. I know it may sound like a sell out but people pay more attention to whom they could see on the big screen than the contents of the film. Also education and upbringing plays a big role in this as well. In sociology "it takes a whole community to raise a child". So whoever influences the children, the same intellect would come out from him or her. Just my two cents. And also im proud that you created this channel we really need this. Philippines has a lack of creativity workplaces or I mean that there are only few schools and workshops that teaches art and media or film making, and I am sure that many Filipinos want to became directors, writers and editors but they can't achieve it because of lack of filmmaking schools but there are some film making schools that are very expensive and for me it is not important to go the filmmaking school because you make your own short films and submit or pitch it to the contest or find some agents to help you make a movie but as I said the lack of vision in creativity of the Filipinos, The Filipinos are very creative but our system sucks it up. For me Philippine cinema will became a hit or famous someday if there are many filmmakers will make new movies that can inspire other Filipinos to become creative, and our marketing of movies will reach internationally and it can also improved our country. Because we are facing the never ending life system like finish school, get major and common courses, get a job, make some money and that's it, and I hope we can share our ideas and hear each other, we can't waste our talents because being creative or talented can change the country or the world.

For example, yung film na Mana, I would never watch it in the theatre Kasi it's not the experience I associate the movie theatre with pero at home it was wonderful and thought provoking. I think the industry should find other forms of reaching the home instead of filling theatre seats.

Me as an aspiring filipino filmaker can see this like why are the good cinematic films produced in this country have a low audience while those very common romance comedies with A-list celebs gets the most of our box office and audience like how? And WHY? And then our kababayans would think of our cinema as shit its because the rom con ones were very advertised by a big company and wouldn't see the hidden treasures buried, and hoping people and people who noticed this to do something about it.

Japan has anime movies like studio ghibli, and Your Name, Thailand also has a trend of super funny rom-com & underated horror film, but Korea is topping it all even winning as Oscar film in Parasite, and you can also check that Korean Series not to mention boy bands or girl bands are topping charts, so what can Philippine Movies match them with Love team movies, LOL, or the generic Probinsyado Series how about the rehash movies of Vice Ganda or skin shedding plot of Vic Sotto's movies every december, I'm also sure I can hear some people claiming they dont want tagalog movies why because they see it as a low quality film adding to culture colonial mentality about everything.

I like how your form of video essay and editing is very influenced by a certain accented channel, and how you turn it to your own style. Also, the vid is very informative and easily understood, overall a great vid. Only concerns is the audio quality and some editing fixes, most especially your upload rate. I will wait for your next video, hopefully with a great mic.

been noticing this, FOR YEARS, the Romance are Repetitive, Comedy has been using the same exact joke that was said hundred years ago that only a 80 year old person would laugh at makes it so so Cringe, i've been in the Internet, that i just Prefer the other foreign movies, and i, want to make a story aswell, but the way those studios making stories is like "For the Money" and not for Entertainment, if they want money, they should make MOVIES that would Appeal Foreigners or other Genres, Like ACTION, SCI-FI, HORROR and FANTASY, only if we have very good CGIs, it's just tiring

Tama. At saka yung mga senseful kind ng Pinoy movies yun ang karapat-dapat na kumita ng malaki. Dapat may adbokasiya ang Philippine entertainment industry sa maayos at safe na viewing experience para sa Pinoy audience. How? By making and supporting senseful Filipino teleseryes and movies with strictly no toxic sexy films and adult-themed contents na nagpapanggap na educational kuno.

You cant really blame them when they are trained to be like that from the news(CHIKAMINUTE OR TSIMIS GANYAN) to teleserye(SUPER MEGALOVE TEAM) to movies (ULTRAMEGASUPERLOVE TEAM $TAR POWER). Theyve been trained like Pavlovs dog. It just bit them back now that many are low to medium middle class, aince they now can afford something outside the mainstream shit like netflix on ya phone. Thats why im grateful for netflix, youtube, and, especially, Kdrama to up the anti for Filipino Movies and series. Plus, you gotta improve on the genre. Everyone here suffers from poor public service and even more; they should focus on empowerment of peps like say John Wick or The Raid style of play than using star power like Anne Curtis in a role where its so unrealistic for her as a person to be there. Also, some think indie films are mostly heavy to watch, so they opt for something that will entertain their miserable lives than to suffer even more. Likewise, most peps have this idea of Filipino Films or anything that is Filipino is shit already. You cant blame em. Add to that accessibility of GOOOD FILMS is shit.

i kinda disagree with the specific genre that will get you the filipino crowd, im going to give Heneral Luna as a perfect example, the film was great, it maybe consider one of the greatest. The film focused on history, isn't too much of a love story drama or horror to me. The real problem is the LACK of marketing, we knew how fast everything goes for facebook we knew how people will do tedious work to hype up something. if marketing was properly done everything wouldn't be risking loss of profit for the film. It just has to be executed WELL and quality must be given what the audiences expected to receive. Maybe if aspiring filmmakers and directors started to accept this then i guess we're going to see another Era for films in the Philippines

But I don't mean all Filipino films are bad, there are amazing Filipino films, Filipino people just don't give a shit about it. This is why our films are not known around the world, because the films are so bad.

It's just difficult to appreciate Filipino movies due to the fact that they are not comparable to American movies. Filipino movies are also unwatchable because acting is overly exaggerated, the way they speak in movies is also different from how people talk normally in real life, the plot is usually the same as others, too dramatic. Are people really dressed so formal and full of makeup when they're home? It's just unnatural, their facial expressions are also cringe. Yes it may be watchable in the Philippines but you can't expect it to be accepted globally.
