The Curious History of Central America's Best Left...
Hey guys! This video dives into the fascinating story of Pavones-one of Central America's (and the world's) best left points. The tale is one of discovery, corruption, land disputes, and even murder. I spent hours and hours researching and editing this video, so I hope you enjoy the story. Please let me know of any parts of the story I missed in the comments.

Great research work! Dan Fowlie's story deserves a movie.
Another even more in depth book on the topic is Allan C. Weisbecker’s “Can’t You Get Along With Anyone?; A Writers Memoir and a Tale of a Lost Surfers Paradise”. Great read

I could not get thru that book for the life of me bc of how much of an immature cunt he presents himself as but I probably should’ve expected that from the title. I found his other work more compelling

I have been living here since 96 and have friends that have lived there for 30+ years. Luckily there are some other breaks that are kinda secret and not as well known that the locals enjoy without the crowd. Thanks for not exposing them. PURA VIDA 🌴

Excellent video Dan. I first surfed Pavones in 1990. We stayed in a room above the bar that used to be right on the beach. The fishermen would bring in fresh fish everyday. We would have to wait until the locals ate then we would be served a meal. They would cut the generator off at 10pm, and unless you had a candle or flashlight you wouldn't see light until the next morning. We surfed several points that are in the area usually just me and the 3 friends I was with. It was a special time. I would tell you about the trek to get there, but that is a whole other story lol. Pura Vida.

Been coming down to CR since 2003. Used to love going to Pavones. Ended up settling in Dominical after almost 30 years in the Florida Keys. There, like here, behind every great fortune was a great crime!😊
I went there with Danny Mac Jr and his son and stayed at Sawmills. Sawmills is a mile or so from Pavones and we slept with guns. I did surf id perfect 6 feet alone and it was one of the best days of my surfing life.
I remember visiting what was left of Dan's house sometime between 1986-1990. Part of the sawmill was still there, but only ashes were left of his house. A local told me that several Hawaiian surfers (I think he said Dane Kealoha, Larry Bertleman, and Buttons, but I am not certain) used to surf the point and stay in Dan's house. That was my first visit to Pavones, which required an all day drive on bumpy, dusty roads that began at the turn off to Playa Hermosa. There were paved roads in Quepos, but right back to gravel at the town limits. To get to Pavones, there was a cable-pulled ferry that was used where the big bridge crosses the river now, and during the rainy season flash floods, at least one creek had to be crossed by driving through it. Thank God for a trusty rental car that was nearly a boat for one rainy crossing. The only visible place to stay was on the second floor above the cantina, but there were some houses for rent further down the road near a single-engine landing strip. Incredible waves and laid back surf scene then; same good wave, but intense crowds now. Thanks for bringing back the memories DH... nice job on telling the story. Cheers and thumbs up to ya!

Yea, a very good video and story! I was in CR in '01 and knew nothing of the story behind Pavones. We spent 18 days in CR, but regretfully never made it to Pavones. We only made it as far south as Montepaulo(sp?). We had intended to go on to Pavones, but decided to go back north to Dominical. Again, great vid!

Fabulous video, surf, murder and land. I’m trapped in belize due to having my land grabbed. Neighbours have been murdered.
Crazzyyyyy
Btw Dan, if anything, you have friends in CR who can help wirh anything. Just remember the name 'Yeyo' he's in Jaco and just mention Brian from Curaçao. He knows what to do.
Actually,...if you are in vicinity of Jaco ever again. You should ask for him. He the person to talk to around thos parts. So the entire west coast and possibly the carib. He knows people.
‘Friends’ 😳 how did they even manage to sell land under his name?
