The Curious Case Of The Secret Super Stock Mopar

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This 426 Max Wedge Dodge began life as a Street Racer, then became a Daily Driver, and finally ended up spending the last 35 years sitting in the woods, waiting for her turn at restoration.
Here's how she sits today, and a look at some of the details that make a Max Wedge car unique.

I wanted to buy a 1980 Pinto panel wagon from a guy about 25 years ago. It was in nice shape even the paint was pretty good. All it needed to actually drive it was a transmission. It was a 4 speed manual or could easily be converted to an automatic. It was a cool little car orange/ wood sticker on the sides. Had a little round moon window in the upper rear corner. I offered the guy way more than it was worth at the time $1500.00. He wouldn't sell it because he said that it was his retirement project. Yep it's still sitting in the same spot it was 25 years ago. Now it's pretty much worthless and too far gone to do anything with.

A friend of mine had a 72 charger with a 440 max wedge. Didn't know much about the car, he wanted me to rewire the thing with a painless wiring harness, I wired it up, got it running, knew it was a bear of a motor, not much else, you have given me a whole new respect for the history behind these beasts.

Clearly, all these fine folks who would strip the old guy of his sovereign rights to let it rot, or restore it at his will, are the reason Uncle Tony didn't reveal his identity. And if the guy reads these comments, he'll regret letting Uncle Kathy video his digs, because likely, some unscrupulous watcher, will know the houses seen from the window of Uncle Tony's van on the way to and from the Max Wedge's hidey hole,, and more than likely, heartache will come from letting this video get published out to the public. Sad, but likely true. In an age where disrespectful teens lick toilet seats and rant about it being a good thing that the virus is killing old people. I would gladly help the old guy out by standing watch on the property, and getting rid of the rubbish that comes to steal from him after dark.

Variable timing cam gears aren't that old, 'cause that would mean I'm old. Inconceivable. 🤣

I'd thought it was a fresh idea in my early teens ('70s) - centrifugal retard cam gear - an older friend told me 'Vari-Cam' had been around since the '50s.

If you were ever around dirt track racers...….Some old racers used to take a drill and oblong the holes on the cam gear and that was how they changed the valve timing. You put a locking shim on it when you get it where you want it, tighten it and bend the tabs over to lock it in place. Racing on the cheap.

@@tint661 That's still done to this day - and it wasn't just dirt track, that's how all us "old guys" lock them in after degreeing the cam in instead of paying more for adjustable timing sets. (I've been doing it for over 40yrs).

@@Motor-City-Mike Those custom old timing devices had been around a long time. My Dodge Demon had one in it when I went to put a Direct Connection cam in it circa 1980 I took the timing cover and gears off... I went running around Allentown Pa asking everyone what the hell that thing was and nobody even remotely knew... My dad and grandfather owned Speed City USA back then and I had to whimper at their boots to find out what the hell that thing was. Turns out my grandfather being a retired A&P mechanic worked with aircraft and those timing retard devices were quite common on inline aviation engines. So that is apparently where that idea started out at... As a kid growing up in a speed shop I didn't know half of what I thought I did back then... The old timers always knew more... Now that I'm old timer..... Someone finish that one me...
