it's the blue light w/the nearly same shade light blue shirt - it makes him look washed out & it doesn't help that his slide box/annotation...? the box to his right is also blue. For warmth colors you need pinks & oranges. So, basically he's surrounded by unflattering lighting.

I'm always reminded of how i even learned of this concept in the first place. While not exactly glamorous, it was through a certain plotline in 'Inuyasha', where a famous monk attempted to mummify himself, but the isolation only broke him, made him fear death, and served to corrupt him into an evil being. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if a similar tale already existed, and served as inspiration.

This was fascinating, if a bit scary. Nice way to tie in the sponsor with the content, though. On that note, Daven, I think frames 2 and 5 look the best.

"Luan Pho Dang" pronounced "Pho" as "Poa" or near to "Paul" without the l. The "Luang Pho" are not the name. It's like Christian call a priest "Father" (Thai Christian also call Christian priest "Luang Pho" too) While "Pho" literally means "Father". "Luang" use more ore less like adjective to a noun with meaning of holy or royal or respectful. And "Dang" is common name. Maybe not for our generation but the name is very common back then. So don't saperate "luang" and "pho dang" but you may use "luang pho" (same as just "he" or "the priest"). Or the full "luang pho dang". While "dang" only is quite unrespectful but understandable, "Pho dang" have different meaning. It's like you're mentioning someone else.

This is very important. "Luang Phu/Pho" is the title, the honorific address for such monks, followed by his name "Daeng". If you were to say "Phu Daeng", you might as well be referring to some elder in a village, or if you were to say just his name, "Daeng", it would only be used when referring to your friend or someone who is younger/lower class than you.

I believe it was more that they'd just occasionally ring the bell each day and if it had been more than a day or so since the last ring, they'd assume he ceased to be in his body.

I don't know about that monastery, but many monastery have some kind of signal, like a bell or a gong, to signify time for morning and evening prayer. Understand this may not be the case, but it is a potential way they could have known.

Re: the tomb equipped with a bell that he "rang every day" - how would he be able to tell one day from the next while enclosed? Seems to me that as the days wore on, the passage of time would be next to impossible to quantify, and he'd likely be starting to hallucinate.

Have you tried to think a little harder, this is at a religious monastery? ...I'm not religious or of a Buddist background, and I even I can clearly understand how it was described, plus I have an attension span longer than this video to hear what was said. Re-watch it please if you are unsure and curious still, you might learn from your mistake about Luang's 'entombment' (or the lack of it), perhaps put subtitles on to give you a visual focus to concentrait upon. Monasteries do tend to have some variety of musical instruments bells, gongs, tambourines, Oriental/Eastern-sistrums, flutes, piccolos & woodwind/brass/ horns and large sea-shells, Thai-kodos/zithers & Thai-xylophones/glockenspiels; ...plus not only chanting and harmonic singing or speaking prayers etc, being made (not very quetly) at specific times through most of each day, as per some sort of ritualized calander inconjunction with a Solar or Luna/Astral timing system.

I saw a similar monk out in the cold story but instead they took their small thin robe and dunked it in some water, then wrapped around themselves. After a short amount of time steam started rolling off them and they actually dried the robes out with their raised skin temperature while being out in the cold at altitude. Ive seen some where they heat cups of water to very high temperatures just by holding it too. Amazing people and they prove just how strong the mind can really be.

I am fascinated by this ancient practice. Such an incredible example of self control through strengthening of the mind. Some of the other practices may even be an example of psychosomatic effects

I'm half thai and monks in Thailand eat once a day in the same bowl before 11am. Every Thai buddhist boy or man must become a monk once in their life (I can't remember if it's mandatory or just a tradition). My uncles, cousins, Grandad and male extended family members once or many times became monks on their life.

i have been to the Big Buddha on Koh Samui a couple of times but i have never even heard about that particular self mumified monk, however i have seen another dead monk in a glass box a short distance from Pattaya beach on the north east coast of Thailand......there are several Buddhist shrines of great importance off of right hand side turnings as you drive south out of Pattaya on the road to Satahip. some of them are in places hidden from the public such as on hill tops in forrests. there is one monastery that has a giant green colored Buddha statue that Thais go to to do some days of Vippassana meditation while living the lifestyle of monks including begging for alms and walking bare foot. people often go there to make merit for members of their family who have died................................i deaply love the Thai people, i lived there for nearly thirteen years with my beloved late wife....the people are generally good as they adhere to Buddhism in a very sincere manner.

I remember seeing this chap back in 2000. Did not know anything about him and quite literally walked into a monastery off the street and saw him sitting there. Bit of a "what the..." moment.

The sunglasses are purely practical in this case, so I don't think so. Not sure why they didn't choose a normal blindfold, but I think it would have been just the same either way, purely practical.

Some here in the west achieve the same thing sitting all alone in their appartment, eating chips and watching tv while the heating is at 25C. When after years they have still not payed their taxes they sometimes get discovered and for a short time festute on tv themselves. I recommend meditating on that.
