The Curious Case of Saquon Barkley

Спорт

When you take a deep dive into Saquon Barkley's metrics, they're not as impressive as you'd think. Why is that the case, and how will that play out now that he's with the Eagles?

    I’m stoked for the upcoming season, but unless they take an OT early (which does seem likely), we have a bit of uncertainty on our OL - by our insanely high standards. Jurgens looked great, but replacing a HOFer is never easy. Steen did not impress me one iota last season. Granted, he was switching positions as a rookie, so I’m def not giving up on him. Lane has had injuries the past few years. Regardless, the OL will obviously be the best Saquon has ever had. Just hope the right side of the OL can be as good as in previous years. Infusing Amarius Mims would be a welcome, massive - literally and figuratively - addition. Long as Jalen balls out, this should be a NCFCG/SB season.

    That's fair in terms of his vision getting to the line, doesn't explain why he's just been average on plays where he's been given room to work though.

    The record is just over 2,500 yards, that would be a lot to think he would break the record by 500 yards, especially since he's been more of a volume runner rather than an efficient back. But he will be a great tool to fit in with everyone else on this offense. I think he'll get 1,400+ rushing yards. Receiving yards is a wild card, mobile QBs generally don't throw to backs at a high rate.

    @@PhillyFilmRoomfair enough. But there’s definitely something to be said for being on a team with an actual OLine, plus the threats of AJ, Devonta, and Goedert out there, which should open up a lot of holes for him (and help the offense in general, since teams will constantly have to worry about Saquon or Hurts ripping off a big run). Also his ability to block will be super helpful, obviously Smitty is too small to block, and Swift wasn’t good at it either.

  • @uncletom356
    @uncletom3562 ай бұрын

    This video is not hating. I think Roseman would agree with most of what you said. But the fact Howie signed him to the biggest free agency deal (in a loaded RB class) is the biggest "metric" to me. The guy has gone years trying to piecemeal the RB situation. He was at the forefront of depressing RB's wages. So, the league zagged as a whole to not pay top RBs top money. I really think this is when Howie chose to zig. Once D'Andre gets 3/24.5M, the difference between a good-not-great 2-down back and a great 3-down back was "only" $4-4.5M per year. To me, that's "3D chess" at its finest. I don't think Howie is blind. I think he knows the risks. But the risks are larger without a tried-and-true 3-down back, especially behind an OL with loads of talent. And if it goes the way of DeMarco, he's "only" guaranteed two years. Lastly, if the Eagles O stays healthy, the sideline markers should say, "1st and 8" on every single possession. Btw, if Jalen Carter was taken by ATL, one really wonders if Howie would've actually taken Bijan in the top-10. We all dismissed them as smokescreens, but all of these rumors seem to have teeth. We'll see. I'm not as excited as some about Bark's signing; however, he's gonna be a positive, impactful player. JMHO.

    People can be excited for him but not have the same sky high expectations that everyone else has. Someone in the comments said Saquon could go for 3,000 yards this season (that's 500 yards over the all time record). We do this every offseason: see Nolan Smith post draft when people were saying he was going to lead the Eagles in sacks. There's a middle ground between being excited for a player and saying he's going to break all time records. I'm excited for Saquon and think he'll have a career year with the Eagles but I can also see that he hasn't performed as well as the top backs in the league.

  • @PhillyFilmRoom

    Agreed on the contract differences between these 2 down and 3 down guys. I also think RB contracts have been deflated enough now (relative to current cap situations) that it makes sense to pay for some of these guys. Especially since Barkley is an all around back that can hit big plays, handle short yardage situations, make plays as a receiver and not be a liability as a pass blocker. He provides a lot of value in different ways that you can understand why he was paid top 5 money, even if he hasn't been a top 5 back from an efficiency stand point.

    Great breakdown and content! Definitely surprised to see him average at best when it comes to how he's performed in space, in terms of YAC and Missed tackles forced. He definitely has some highlight "sit you down" type plays where he jukes guys out of their cleats, but agreed that sometimes he seems to take the 'I'll cut and try to outrun them" path, instead of a well-placed stiff arm or jumpcut move. The Pass blocking numbers, i think, are why Howie paid what he paid. Saquon has gotten much better at Pass Pro, and it was a big issue last year for the offense and Jalen. Hoping that he settles in a bit to trust holes will open for him to work more consistently. He's still got a great acceleration from 0-60, but it does seem like he's lost a bit of top end speed (although he didn't get many if any long runway-type runs in 2023 to showcase top-end speed tbh, NYG offense didn't give him many ops. there) Overall, I think he'll come in knowing he's a piece of the whole, a strong player that doesn't need to "save the team" every time he steps on the field or gets the ball. That should make him play a bit looser, trust a bit more in the offense and his teammates. He also takes care of the football better than a majority of backs who have gotten his # of touches. Hoping for a great year for him. He's an amazing locker room presence from all accounts, does a ton for local communities which will shine here. Should be fun to see what he does!

    @@PhillyFilmRoom your numbers are skewed. This is why I hardly ever agree with numbers guys like you. You didn’t account for Saquon being the main piece to the offense. All the Giants had was him. No WR threat, TE wasn’t utilized correctly, QB is a bum or was injured, terrible coaching, combined with the 28th ranked Run Blocking OL in the NFL. Watch the damn games. Defenses keyed on Saquon so even when he had plays where he “had room” he really didn’t bc teams were in his area most of the time. You’re looking at a problem and creating a complex solution. Now compare it to Philly? Where he will now have an All Pro WR AJ Brown, Pro Bowl caliber WR Smitty, Pro Bowl caliber TE Goedert, a top rated OL with the best OL coach in football, and a coordinator that’s had multiple #1 offenses. It’s night and day and it’s that simple. Those numbers you have don’t mean anything. You’re literally nitpicking.
