    For anyone interested, here's a rough translation/summary of the conversation between the two players at 9:20 (I can't provide a line by line translation because the audio is a bit unclear, especially when Hong speaks): In the beginning, Yu says there was at least one instance during the game where Hong used one hand to move the pieces and another to punch the clock (which is illegal). He says that when Hong did so, Yu did not complain. Yu then says, "I'm not going to say anything now; we'll see what the arbiter says. I never touched the clock." I can't quite make out Hong's response, but afterwards Yu says, "I didn't do anything; I didn't even touch the clock," and later, "Go talk to the arbiter about this. This is an issue with the clock; what does it have to do with me?" That's when Hong walks away.

    Summary for what happened. Hong press the clock way to lightly on time trouble, which made the clock bounce back, (at one point on the video they even demonstrante this happening), and he lost on time. Hong was arguing that it was not his fault, and te arbiter were arguing that it was indeed his fault. I think it was Hong fault, it's unfortunate, but he lost, this is not a malfunction, just an unfortunate event, you need to fully press the button. Feels bad for Yu Yangyi, he was visibly frustrated, and he proceeded to perform poorly after this game.

    What happened at ~5:22 was probably what happened during the game as well. I have played with these clocks (I believe it's still the same version, at least the same brand) before, unfortunately it can bounce back when you press it lightly (more accurately, maybe staccato or leggieramente in musical terms). I had to press it back and actually eneded up gaining more time. I don't think there is a problem with this particular clock though.

    These are standard tournament clocks. As a GM, Hong has used these on countless occasions. He screwed up his press and somehow tried to weasel out of the loss by blaming the clock. What a guy...

    I don't think he was trying to "weasel out of the loss". Clock bouncing back after you pressed it simply should not happen. He was naturally upset about the problem. Unfortunately, replacing the clocks with better ones is not a feasible option. Overall it was just an unfortunate accident and I agree with the appeal commitee's decision.

    I agree. Sans video evidence, there is little else an arbiter can do. Liked Pragg's thinking; I wud look for witnesses in nearby boards - but yeah, most people see the game, n not clock. One other thing to consider is the DGT live game viewer, to see what happened. It usually records only movements of pieces on the board. And the "games broadcast" to see if the countdown timer shifted from one player to the other. The 360 camera idea - hmm - are we sure we can zoom into a particular "sector" of the video/freeze. This is critical. We are after all talking about noticing the clock from up above, let's say.

    I don't understand how this kind of drama can still happen even though there's like a bajillion cameras everywhere. Surely the simplest solution would be to always record a closeup of the clock and the chessboard to dispel any doubt about what ever happens during a match? It's just weird you have to ask eyewitnesses and deal with players testifying against each other...

  • @unfixablegop
    @unfixablegop5 ай бұрын

    They should go back to 3 second increments in the blitz. 2 seconds provokes unpleasant disputes about the clock and about sloppy piece placement. The players are actually good about it, and nobody complains when you get a sequence of bad piece placement, pressing the clock, adjusting the piece while the opponents time is running. But the crazy 2 second scramble really makes it undignified. Online it's more reasonable because you don't have these side effects, but otb it's just a bad idea.

    Tbh Magnus is acting like an asshole here. That player is probably embarrassed and would feel bad to see a video of Magnus laughing at this situation.

    As always great coverage Chessbase India. Not a big fan of that massive sponsorship logo on the lower left corner of the screen taking up 15% of my POV but because you guys do such great work I'll let it slide. But another massive logo like this taking up more screen real estate and Im out.
