The cure for wiswās (whispers of Shaytān) in wudū, prayer, etc. | Shaykh al-‘Uthaymīn

(Note: at 1:55 it should say "You have NOT made the intention.")
Some additional benefits mentioned by Ustadh Abdullah Abu Ibrahim (one of the Salafi students of knowledge in France) about wiswas & its cure:
"Washing the bodypart in wudu more than 3 times is transgression as mentioned in the well-known hadeeth. So the one who for example washed his arms 3 times, then shaytan comes to him and whispers "you did not properly wash your arm," so he adds a fourth washing thinking that he's doing something good. In reality he did bad and he commited oppression, he has transgressed. So he has not perfected his wudu in that case, meaning he doesnt get the reward of the one who perfects his wudu, due to his opposition to the Sunnah of the Messenger. Abdullah ibn Mughaffal said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying: "There will certainly be people from this Ummah who go beyond the boundaries in purification and in their supplication." Allaah says [what means]: "Verily, Allaah does not love the transgressors." And this is without a doubt from the greatest transgressions, the fact that you're opposing the Messenger of Allaah. The wudu of the Prophet was described to us (in the ahadith), his wudu had no excessive usage of water and washing the bodypart was done max 3 times. So when you add one or more washings to that, what are you looking for exactly by doing that? Whose pleasure are you seeking? The pleasure of Allaah? If its the pleasure of Allaah you're looking for, then you must know that you cannot obtain it by opposing the Sunnah of His Messenger. In reality, the person who does is submitting to the suggestions of Shaytaan and he accepts his (shaytaans) advice, and thus he washes more than three 3 in wudu.
Here a question poses itself: when can we say there is "doubt"? The scholars mentioned that whenever we doubt.. For example: if i'm not sure whether i washed two or three times (and my intent is to wash three times), then I rely upon that which is certain: that I washed [atleast] two times. Certainty is the lower number. We should know that this principle is a basic principle that applies to the person who is not afflicted with these whispers. Meaning, if this doubt only happens like one time... For example: today for maghreb you did wudoo and this doubt came to you whether you washed two or three times, then no problem: go back to certainty which is that you washed two times, and add another washing to it. Even if you had washed four times in this case, then you will be excused because you had doubt. BUT if this doubt comes back when you do wudu for ishaa prayer, and for fajr it comes back, and for duhr it comes back.. Then in this case you do not pay attention to these doubts because your wudu is valid alhamdulillaah. And you will see that when you stop paying attention to this [waswaas], and that you do not act upon it, then shaytaan will leave you eventually and give up with these whispers. So the rule of relying upon certainty i.e. upon the lower number (in case of doubt), it is for the person who might have doubts now and then. But the one who gets doubts every time he does wudu, multiple times in a day, then this person does not pay attention to these doubts. Same applies for the prayer: if you doubt how many rak'ahs you prayed, then the principle is that you build upon the lower number. But this is only for the person who only gets these doubts now and then. But if it happens with every prayer that you doubt the number of rak'ahs, then in this case you do not pay attention to the doubts. And you will see that you will be protected from these whispers, in shaa Allah.
Likewise from the things which people get waswas in, is regarding wudu being broken or not, did something come out from him or not (which breaks wudu)? In the hadith it says that when one of you is in the masjid and feels wind, then let him not leave until he hears a noise or smells something. What does this hadith indicate? That you do not have the right to act upon a doubt, rather you must have certainty that you broke the wudu. If you felt something but you're not sure, then you do not act upon it unless you also smelled something or heard something. Did i smell something or hear something? No i didnt, so i ignore the doubt and dont pay attention to it. And i rely upon the principle of certainty, i.e. that I am still upon wudu. [Continue reading here: justpaste.it/9g8u2]

I need your advice. When I am making wudu and after washed my mouth and are about to rinse my nose, I get these thoughts which says i have not rinsed my mouth during wudu, and the same happens when I don’t know if I have washed my arm 3 or 4 times. Another incident is sometimes I feel like peed on my self and i check and it’s nothing and then the thought comes back over and over and i check. Same it is after I wake up and I am scared and anxious for having wet dream to see if there semen on my underwear. Even if I don’t find it I check multiple times a day. This started few month ago. At the beginning it was waswas regarding wudu, and then prayer. Now it is in istinjaa, ghusl, impure and impure clothes etc. especially when I have thought about my clothes being impure and which means my prayer would not be valid. And these are extreme thoughts i have. And it’s feels better to not stay alive

Is there any advice for waswas in intention, which pushes someone to keep "verbalising" his intention in his head repeatedly. Can he just come to prayer and says the takbeer without pausing a while to think of the current prayer even he feels his heart is not aware of what prayer he is praying. Jazak Allahu Khayran

"It's not legislated to speak out with the niyyah (intention), and the four imaams agreed upon this. The major scholar ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said: "The niyyah is the intent and the determination to perform a certain thing. And the place for this (niyyah) is in the heart. It has nothing to do with the tongue whatsoever." Then he said: "This is why it has not been reported from the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) nor from any of his Companions that they ever spoke out with any niyyah. And we have not heard that they mentioned this. Rather, the niyyah is the intent to perform a certain thing. So every person who is determined to perform an action, then he has the niyyah." Then he further said: "It cannot be imagined whatsoever that any act of worship or anything else is performed without niyyah (intention). So whoever sits down to perform the wudu, then he has already made the intention for wudu. And whoever stands up to pray, then he has already made the intention for prayer. A sane person cannot perform an act of worship or anything else without any niyyah. So the niyyah is something that is always there when a person has the will and intent to perform a deed. And if he were to try to perform any intended deed without a niyyah, then he would NOT be able to do this! And if Allaah were to order him to do this, for example to pray or do wudu without any intention, then Allaah would order him with something that is impossible to do! And if the person has any doubt whether he has made the niyyah or not, then this is a type of insanity!..." So the summary of this speech is that the niyyah is the will and intent to perform something. And the niyyah can NEVER be absent from a deed that is wilfully performed. So everyone who performs any deed while he has willed to do it, then its unavoidable that there is a niyyah. This is why the Prophet (alayhi assalaatu wassalaam) said: "Verily, actions are only with niyyaat (intentions)." Meaning: there is no action without intention. Its impossible for anyone to perform an action wilfully without intention. This is the meaning of this hadith... So if Allaah for example would tell us: "perform wudu without niyyah", then this would be something impossible for us. So here it becomes known that the waswaas (whisperings) that some people have about this, which is that they say: "i didnt have the niyyah", this is an illusion and theres no reality to this! How can it be said that he didnt have the niyyah while he has performed this deed?? So everyone who has performed any action, then its unavoidable that he has had the niyyah. This is why ibn Taymiyyah said: "Speaking out with the niyyah upon the tongue is a deficiency in sanity and in religion." How so? Deficiency in religion because this is an innovation. And deficiency in sanity because this is like the one who wants to go eat something and says: "I have the niyyah that by putting my hand in this vessel to take some food and put it in my mouth and eat it so that i can become full." This is what it means to speak out with the niyyah! So the correct opinion is: the niyyah's place is in the heart, and it has nothing to do with the tongue. This is why if a person would come for 'Asr prayer: he wants to pray asr and he is determined to do so, and he knows the time of 'asr. So when he wants to say "Allaahu akbar" (to start the prayer), he says first: "I have the niyyah to pray four rak'aat of Dhuhr prayer." (he mistakenly said Dhuhr instead of 'Asr). Whats the ruling on this persons prayer now? His prayer is actually correct! Because the place of the niyyah is the heart and it has nothing to do with the tongue. So if he made a mistake with his tongue, then what counts is the niyyah made in the heart. (in this example he had the niyyah for 'Asr prayer in his heart, but his tongue said Dhuhr prayer, so the mistake of his tongue doesnt count). So his prayer is correct (and he is considered to have prayed 'Asr, not dhuhr)."

I need your advice. I'm a 15 years old girl. I am suffering from wasswas for 6-7 months. I get whispers in wudu and prayer constantly. Sometimes it takes me an hour to finish my wudu. That's why I record myself during wudu and prayer. Recording makes things a little easier. I also have problems during ghushal and in the toilet. Sometimes I keep thinking about it and simply living everyday feels exhausting. My sil took me to the doctor and she adviced me to take counseling for ocd. I don't want to take it because I don't think I have any mental illness. Do you think I should take the counselling for ocd?

Its possible that it could be OCD, Allah knows best. Anyway, ignore the doubts & whispers, dont act upon them, continue with your acts of worship and don't repeat them. Do ruqyah upon yourself (you can recite just al-faatihah & the last three surahs of the quraan, and ayatul kursi). Always say the adhkaar of the morning & evening. Supplicate a lot to Allah to cure you from this illness and to protect you. Also, read & watch all of the links below the video description.

I need help. Every time I do wudu I feel wind passing or smell or noise of wind and this WHILST I am doing wudu and this makes me restart doing wudu again and again as every time I restart I feel wind passing or smell or noise of wind WHILST doing wudu and this makes me spend so much time in the bathroom and I take really long to do wudu, sometimes even 30 minutes. Also, sometimes, right after doing wudu whilst going from the bathroom to my room or just before starting to pray I feel wind, or sound or smell of wind and then I go back to redoing wudu and spend more time doing wudu again. What do I do to stop this? I spend too much time doing wudu and also spend too much water and it's getting really stressful because I am afraid of praying in other people's houses and I delay prayers too as it takes me really long to do wudu. I once asked Shaykh Saalim Baamihriz on whatsapp about a brother with heavy wiswaas, who keeps repeating stuff in his prayer (such as repeating al faatihah). The Shaykh answered: "This brother must not pay any attention to any [thoughts that tell him] he should repeat. Even if he is certain that he made a mistake (in pronouncing a word, etc), he must NOT repeat. Because this is Shaytaan telling him that he is certain. He should continue (and not repeat), and seek refuge with Allaah from shaytaan. And he should always say the adhkaar of the morning & evening. And everytime any whispers come to him, he seeks refuge against shaytaan, and continue and not go back (to repeat). For example if he washes his feet once, twice or three times, then that's it (he doesnt repeat). If he (shaytaan) tells him: "No! (You have to repeat!)", then you also tell him, "No!" and you continue and don't wash a fourth time. Likewise, everytime he recites a verse, and shaytaan tells him "you made a mistake," then he doesnt listen and he should continue. He shouldn't pay any attention to him. He should repel (these thoughts) and struggle (do jihaad) against himself (to not listen to these doubts). And with this, in shaa Allaah, Allaah will give him victory (over shaytaan). And he should ask Allaah a lot to remove this affliction from him. Because these are whispers from the devil. We ask Allaah for safety." (Source: whatsapp conversation with Shaykh Saalim)

Assalaamu alaykum, i have waswas in aqeedah, about kufr, in salah and wudu, in the beginning it was just salah, and i used to laugh at the dumbness of the waswas in wudu, basically anything that had a niyyah and is connected to salah, like ghusl from major impurity, wudu etc, i have SEVERE waswas, and nowadays, i have a new waswas, about passing gas, gas comes and i control and shaytan says, “look, what if some of it got released” even tho i didn’t feel anything being released, and when i do, actually, he makes i.e tells me to bend, go back and forth, to smell it, cuz he says “the release is so minor, you won’t be able to smell it while standing where you are” and also i feel something in my backside and shaytan says its gas but i know thats a feeling in the skin and that gas release isn’t like that, so i ignore it, but i am about to say Allaahu akbar to start salah and like it just doesn’t let me say it cuz its like you might have passed gas and stuff and you would not be able to do it with the niyyah of salah properly and i feel, myself that i am can’t do this, bear in mind ya akhi that all of this happens and my waswas in niyyah and seperate issue aswell, which also happens simultaneously, i just don’t know what to do, i have missing fajr for the past month cuz of this, and wudu takes me so long like 30-15 minutes the very least but its like 20 mins on average, and i just don’t know what life is, i just think about what if i have to travel, and what if i get married, what will i do then? Wa alaykum assalam akhi. Firstly, check these video's and also everything below them in the video description: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qYan1MV-qaTNe8Y.html&lc kzread.info/dash/bejne/a2aEtbF_f8y2Xag.html Secondly: May Allah cure you. The first thing is that you should sincerely turn towards Allah and constantly beg Him to cure you from this sickness, especially at the times where duaa is answered such as the last part of the night. If you are able to recite the Quran, then try to recite Surat al baqarah as much as possible (for example once every day, or once every three days, etc). And in general: keep your heart attached to Allah, seeking His aid only, because only He can remove afflictions and illnesses, and He responds to the Du'a of the afflicted one. Recite every day the prophetic supplications (that you say every morning, every evening, before sleeping, etc). This is a very strong protection against shaytan. And of course recite quran daily, never ever abandon reciting the Quran. Make it hard upon Shaytan. The scholars say that the cure for these whispers & doubts is: (1) seeking refuge with Allah from shaytan, and (2) completely turning away from the doubts/whispers and ignoring them and cutting them off. With regards to turning away from them, this also means that you absolutely don't perform any action BASED UPON these doubts/whispers, nor do you abandon any action based upon it. For example: you have prayed and you get doubts & whispers regarding your prayer being invalid? Then ignore it. Don't act upon it by repeating the prayer. With regards to the intention, this is something very easy. For example, the fact you went to the bathroom for wudu already means you have the correct intention for wudu. Because otherwise, why did you go to the bathroom? Lets say for example you go to the kitchen to eat something. You going to the kitchen already means you have the intention to cook, and eat food etc. Do you ever see yourself going to the kitchen while saying to yourself "i have the intention to go there, to cook and to eat"? You don't do that. Intentions are simple. No need to make it hard upon yourself. So whenever you do wudu or ghusl or prayer from now on, just go do your act of worship and move on. Just go pray and move on. You had the correct intention, don't worry about it. Don't repeat your prayer or anything. Because IF you keep acting upon the waswaas (by repeating the act of worship), then you are OBEYING SHAYTAN here, you aren't obeying Allah. Allah orders us (through his Messenger) to turn away from doubts & whispers, but here you are opposing that order by repeating stuff based upon the waswas. Question: "Is it legislated in islam to speak out with the niyyah (intention) before you do an act of worship (such as prayer)?" One of the ulamaa of the Emirates responded to this by saying: "And its not legislated to speak out with the niyyah (intention), and the four imaams agreed upon this. The major scholar ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said: "The niyyah is the intent and the determination to perform a certain thing. And the place for this (niyyah) is in the heart. So his prayer is correct (and he is considered to have prayed 'Asr, not dhuhr).

With regards to passing gas, just ignore all of those doubts. The prophetic cure for this is: don't repeat your wudu unless you clearly heard the sound of the passing of gas or you found its smell. As long as its a doubt, ignore it, and move on. Don't further think about it. Don't do all that stuff you wrote (such as bending, going back and forth, etc) BECAUSE THIS IS ACTING UPON WASWAS. You cannot act upon it whatsoever, you must ignore it!

wa alaykum assalam. The general rule for waswaas is: seek refuge with Allah and ignore the waswas completely. As long as a person has repented for their sins then alhamdulillaah they should know that Allaah forgives all sins and is Most Merciful.

Assalamualikum I have a problem regarding ocd and waswas and also and constant feeling which makes me almost certain that I pass wind majority of the times I make wudu and pray. It sometimes takes me upto 2/3 hours to pray a salah. It had made me lose khushoo and sweetness of salah. The feeling of me passing wind is not constant when l'm not doing wudu or salah but As soon as I put my hands to wash them for wudu I get this feeling. and I can go periods without feeling it. It feels more like a sting and release of wind and I'm almost certain it is me breaking wind. My dad told me to make one wudu per salah and no matter what I feel I should carry on but the problem is that the feeling is not continuous and the fatwa that was given was that the ruling should only apply to those with constant flatuency. Please tell me what I can do to ease my situation may Allah SWT bless us all Barakallahu fik. Also, I have a lot of stomach issues and do pass quite a lot of gas throughout the day but not enough to the point where I am excused and I can go through periods without passing it

Wa alaykum assalam. It seems to me that you are not absolutely certain that you are passing wind, this looks like a case of shaytaan playing with you and giving you the "feeling" that you broke wudu. So in that case, just ignore all of it completely. And don't repeat your wudu and prayer based upon these doubts and "feelings" that you broke your wind. Only act upon complete certainty. Do wudu, go pray, and just move on. Don't look back. Don't entertain these thoughts and whispers. Also, read all of the links i posted below the video. May Allah aid you and cure you.

Ameen and you as well akhi. Akhi I just want to be sure: is it a real gas incontinence issue that you have? Did you already go to doctors for this, and did they confirm this illness for you? Because I have a feeling that it may be shaytaan playing with you and "giving you the feeling" that you're constantly passing gas. Because Shaytaan can play with a persons private part, to make him feel that he broke wudu (as scholars have mentioned). So I have a feeling that this is the case with you. That you are not actually 100% sure that you are passing gas, but that you are just doubting and "getting the feeling" that you passed gas. Am I right in this?
