The Cult of the Jersey Diner Burger, with Padma Lakshmi | The Burger Show

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In Northern New Jersey, sliders reign supreme. The tiny, 1oz patties smashed thin on a griddle, smothered with onions, and placed between steamed buns are a regional speciality that have been perfected at the Jersey City landmark, White Mana. The history alone is worth the trip, which is why host Alvin Cailan invited Top Chef judge/host and fellow burger burger fanatic, Padma Lakshmi, to soak up some Jersey lore. Get to know the diner's ties to 1939 World's Fair, as well as its surprising connection to heavyweight champ Mike Tyson, from longtime owner Mario Costa. This is a piece of burger mythology you don't want to miss.

My father with very little education, second generation American, was able to easily get a job that paid for a home, a new car, a wife who didn't have to work, and multiple children. CaptainEO420: Nice propaganda accusing people of being bots and calling their comments bullshit without even making an attempt at refuting their arguments. My father was retired and has been passed on for decades so he didn't have to deal with the economy of today. I'm a Millennial. Everyone I know is a Millennial. Imagine a Millennial in Los Angeles with no education affording a house, a spouse, a new car, and several children. It's fantasyland. A pipe dream. Mass immigration has stifled wages. We imported huge amounts of cheap so called "low-skilled" (there's nothing low-skilled about building a house) workers. That stagnated wages for the vast majority of Americans. If you aren't working in healthcare or another industry with huge growth your wages are much lower than where they should be. We shipped millions of good jobs out of the country to employ cheap foreign workers to make goods for less and increase profits. Have costs gone down? Can people afford more cars made in Mexico? Can people afford better refrigerators made in China? Ask yourself what the gain has been from the above two policies. Ask yourself if you or anyone you know has benefited from them. Think about who did benefit from them and stop calling people bots because they aren't retarded.

i remember the first time i ate at the white mana. it was the very first day i had ever gotten my license. i just wanted to go around and explore, and i ended up getting horribly lost in jersey city. i was honestly terrified. i was just some punk kid from the suburbs and now i was in real, unfamiliar, urban territory. i pulled into the lot, and sat there trying to figure out where i was and how to get back home before i ran out of gas. i finally broke, went in, completely oblivious to where i was and what i was about to eat. ive been a foodie all my life, so to calm down i decided that id eat some food. ill never forget just how kind and understanding the staff was, and how good the food tasted. they let me use the phone to call home, and thank god my mom answered. if it was my stepdad id still be at the white mana today. she was able to come to my rescue and tell me how the hell i had to get home. jersey city is a place i feel i could always know more about. the roads are confusing, the drivers are assholes, the rush hour is painful, but the people there are some of the best in the world, as long as you look in the right place. this video really brought back that memory in full, very well done.

When I first heard of the concept of The Burger Show, I really didn't think I was gonna be that interested in it. I'm from Germany and I've never been to the US, so I had NO idea how incredibly nuanced the burger culture over there was. It's really interesting to see how many different types of burger there are, and I'm actually looking forward to every single episode of The Burger Show now.

Preston Mcgill it's not that diverse. Outside of metropolitan areas the available fare is typically 1) Pizza, 2) Burgers, 3) Fish Fry. Sometimes MSG laden "Chinese" food. Sometimes tacos (especially good in the southwest) Restaurants in the city are phenomenal for sure, and there are definitely hidden gems spread out throughout the country, but it's definitely not the norm 😂

to be real honest, the reason why small town restaurants are mediocre is that they're either the only restaurants available or the old fashioned, really good restaurants that were there are driven out of business by big chains because locals buy the cheaper option so that local flavor just dies off.

There's a huge BBQ culture in multiple states and regions with their own techniques and traditions, for example. There is soul food. There's people from all over the world it goes way beyond pizza and tacos in the U.S.

Though the Hackensack White Manna has the potato roll (which is a good addition to a slider), the White Mana in Jersey City has the fattier patty out of both. Both diners have their quirks. They withstood the test of time. But I got to stick to my hometown roots and go to White Mana. Don't @ me please.

hes real jersey soprano though... jersey has a very very rich mafia history ... he is exactly what jersey was throughout 60s 70s and 80s only in the last 2 decades is northern jersey different. now we have a much much greater mix of hispanic and indian in the midtown jersey city area. central and south jersey are more close to white farmers ... jersey shore is staten island trash and dumb teens and lazy and sweet beach communities.

That's the way it was when I was growing up in Detroit. They called them Greasy Spoons, a diner where you could either get a slider or a breakfast plate. My favorites were the fried egg sandwiches. Always tasted better in a diner. They have all but disappeared in most regions.

Go to The White Hut in West Springfield Massachusettes. It's been there since '39. Awesome thin burger with perfect fried onions made right in front of your face. Sawdust on the floor, grab a few cartons of milk from the drink cabinet, and hang out with the "Westside" locals. The place is slam packed every single day for lunch, you literally can not fit another body into the front door.
