@@danielstripreports - Multiple Unit trains with big underfloor Diesel engines aren't ideal for long-distance passenger work! When I travelled from Reading to Plymouth with GWR the coffee in my cup nearly climbed over the sides due to the vibration from the 938hp underfloor engine as we climbed Wellington Bank!

The seating isn't a 'design flaw', it's the configuration requested by the TOCs to maximize the number of seats. Additionally the shop was taken out of the units to increase seating and luggage space some years ago. As for the overcrowding, pre-Covid it was rare to have units in tandem on the Bournemouth-Manchester route so yes they were frequently overcrowded, more so because people used them for short commutes e.g. Southampton-Winchester, Basingstoke-Reading etc. They are reasonable units, but not fit for purpose for long distance routes.

    - It's ironic that trains intended to operate over long distances - such as Aberdeen in Scotland to Penzance in Cornwall - have such cramped passenger accommodation, particularly in Standard Class. One of the pleasures of travelling by rail as a small group used to be sitting (facing each other) around a table for four .... or, if you had five companions, with the other two sitting at the small table just across the aisle. Alas, no more where Arriva Cross Country is concerned. As for the lunacy of operating Diesel Electric Multiple Units for long distances either under the 25kV AC overhead wires, or over an 850 V DC conductor rail, it just beggars belief! An extra carriage, fitted with pickup shoes, a pantograph, resistors and a transformer surely couldn't cost that much?

@@KempSimon why does the power used matter to you as a customer. It is much more convenient to run diesels when dealing with trains that run through several lines across the country. It would be a lot of effort for the driver to frequently switch between pantograph and third rail every time the train changed lines. If climate is a worry for you, diesel trains are still significantly more environmentally friendly than cars. I see no problem with running diesel trains on such routes.

Avanti West Coast are to replace the Class 221 Voyagers with the Hitachi Class 805 Bi-Mode AT300 trains that will operate on London Euston-Wrexham, Shrewsbury, Chester, Bangor, Holyhead, Llandudno Junction and Llandudno. Which is to enter service from mid 2023. But the Crosscountry Class 220 and Class 221 are very nice trains that were built by Bombardier Transportation (now Alstom) in Derby.

My wife and I are planning on short break to Glasgow, from Newcastle at the end of May We actually used LNER in November for a trip to London (or first train journey for 20+ years) and have already booked another trip to Edinburgh for March (again LNER) so we just fancied trying another company. Unfortunately tickets are still not available, but just for interest sake I have been looking at prices for early in April, as a comparison: Cross Country (£36.50) Lumo (32.39) and LNER (£19.50) .. for 2 adults, with a Two Together railcard to Edinburgh, at about lunchtime on a Monday I actually thought Lumo was going to be dirt-cheap but would probably be packed Given the choice of the 3 companies .. which would you use ?

Hey Brian! I’m not Daniel ofc but I can give advice since I’ve been on all of the companies. I would say that crosscountrys seats are really comfortable and quite roomy too and good for a journey like yours but I wouldn’t go for lumo as the seats are quite uncomfortable and just not nice! So if ur willing to pay - go for cross country!

@@blxeixiia many thanks for your reply. Yes, I thought Lumo could be one to avoid .. although i assumed it would be due to overcrowding, at the cheap price. However, yesterday I looked on their website and for a trip to Edinburgh, they were showing LNER trains full, Cross Country and Trans Pennine at about £80 and theirs at abourt £40 (2 adults with railcard) but when I looked on LNER site, the tickets were available, at less than £20. If that's their 'game' I wouldn't ever travel on Lumo

Did I hear you say that you booked your travel ticket with Trainline? Personally, as it's a third-party retailer, I wouldn't touch Trainline with a barge pole. Always buy your tickets using the web site of the Train Operating Company which prices the flow for your particular journey. It's so much easier to get a "Delay Repay" refund if things go wrong. Incidentally, a First Class walk-on ticket from Bournemouth to London is valid via CrossCountry and Great Western to Paddington (complimentary refreshments) as well as via South Western Railway (no complimentary refreshments!) to Waterloo. Also, for that matter, via Southern to London Victoria if you fancy breaking your journey en route to spend time in Chichester, Worthing or Brighton!

I booked with trainpal, their split ticketing is the main reason why, very often see tickets far cheaper booking with them, if I have the choice I use the TOCs app, but this gave me a few quid off the ticket price so I take the risk. Also they give vouchers etc away often and there's no booking fee plus free cancellations. I don't usually buy walk up tickets as they're ridiculously expensive, don't know the exact price would cost near to a hundred first class from Bournemouth to London, advance singles best for me

@@danielstripreports - I do apologise! I thought that you said "Trainline" but on re-playing the video clip it was definitely "Trainpal" so I'll have to listen more carefully in future. About the only good feature of Arriva CrossCountry is their reasonably-priced Weekend First upgrades. Travelling from Oxford to Southampton Central on 2nd June I upgraded for £10 which is half the price one would pay for a similar upgrade with First Great Western. I've always received complimentary refreshments when upgrading with CrossCountry at weekends and Public Holidays but it's usually a cup of coffee and a biscuit. Because I'd split my travel tickets at Reading the female Conductor wanted to charge me £5 extra for the Weekend First upgrade but when I pulled out my copy of "National Rail Conditions of Carriage" she soon changed her mind!
