Great video! I just watched the Criterion blu-ray of The 39 Steps, so it was nice to learn about their laserdisc releases. Spine #3. Wow.

Hello and thank you so much. And yes, the history of the CC and the film go back to the early LD days.

This is another great video. I had forgotten the black label reissue was an early digital sound release so I definitely need to add it to my collection. I have most of the black label issues of the British period films that criterion put out. For most of them they were the only decent versions for years due to the onslaught of crappy public domain releases. As for the film I can’t speak highly enough of it. If there had ever been any doubt about Hitchcock In Britain this was the film that cemented his legacy forever. The Man Who Knew Too Much the year before was a spark of creativity and on this film he finally hit his stride and made an undeniable masterpiece whose influence is still felt in genres today.

Thank you so much my dear friend. It is a pleasure to read your comments as always. I too share in your enthusiasm regarding the early British period of his career. I would also put a lot of emphasis on Blackmail, which will be released on a blu ray later this summer by Kino! I cannot wait for that one. But you are so right that in many ways this film 39 Steps solidified his career staples. It is perhaps THE best example of a "man on the run" (although NORTH BY NORTHWEST might be my personal favorite).

Wonderful video, Daisuke! I have Criterion's blu-ray release of this film, but it was very neat to see the Laserdisc copies. It's interesting that the first edition had that chapter error on the back cover. I'm a big fan of Alfred Hitchcock and The 39 Steps is probably my favorite of his British films. It's interesting to think that this was the first (of many) of his films to make it into The Criterion Collection. Thanks for sharing! By the way, I discovered your channel through Cineflect!

Oh wow, it's really hard to narrow it down. He's just got so many great films! I'd say my top five are probably Psycho, Rear Window, The Birds, Vertigo, and Dial M for Murder. What about you?

@@MainelyMovies Great choices. It is tough to come up with a definitive list, but I think Vertigo, Notorious, Psycho, North by Northwest, Rear Window, Rebecca, The Lady Vanishes come to mind almost immediately!

Weird that Criterion had such problems with chapter stops. Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, which released in late 1990, had chapter stop misprintings on the back too. Wonder how long it plagued them....

I am not sure either why this was, but I have a feeling that, as there were other issues regarding these laserdiscs in terms of there being inconsistent spine numbering in some areas, and other issues like that, it might be that this was still a new kind of territory that the team was still working on and perfecting. That is my speculation.

@Daisuke Beppu, There are two printings of the silver version of the 39 Steps, the first printing in 1985 and second printing in 1987 however both printings are exactly the same cover and presentation wise, the dates printed are different though. One user on lddb stated that his copy which is the second pressing acted strange while playing "the screen goes grey and the word "criterion" appears in the bottom right corner for a split second during chapter 3. Also about three seconds of the film are repeated after the flip from side 1 to side 2. After the credits a message appears from Criterion stating that they hope you enjoyed watching the 3rd title in their collection, which is followed by an 800 number and address for Criterion." The first printing was also exclusively made by 3M in 1985, and second printing exclusively made by Pioneer USA in 1987. Another thing to be aware of is that 3M releases were more prone to laser rot and didn't have as high standards as Pioneer. The case is similar for the black cover, first printing in 1985 likely by 3M, second printing in 1989 likely by Pioneer USA. Anyway, keep up with the good videos.

Surprising that more LaserDiscs never had repeated footage when switching sides. The Star Wars Definitive Collection first pressings are notable in that the beginning of side 3 on Empire Strikes back is missing about 7 seconds of footage. Later pressings restored this footage. These were pressed by Mitsubishi.

Thank you Dark Master my dear friend!!!!! You are FANTASTIC! So, yes, I might have mentioned it before, but I don't collect any second printings or third printings etc. where there is no noticeable difference in terms of contents or outward appearance. Also, I don't try to collect the editions where the address is labeled New York on some, and California on others. However, I do understand the 3M/Pioneer issue and I address this with some of my discs where needed. Yes, it is a sort of "infamous" point that 3M discs have been known to be more prone to laser rot, and sadly that is true for some of the titles that I have. Cheers my friend and see you at the 4th one!

Great video Daisuke! Another Hitchcock masterpiece for me! In my top 150 films and so enjoyable from start to finish. He has made so many of my favourites but this is in his top 10 imo. Although i still have loads to check out of course. I aim to review all of his films and eventually do a ranking.

Yes it would be a bit different compared to others but the 'big 4' hitchcock's are all there haha. It will take a while but i do plan to make a full ranking. I hope to do it all in the one video but it may have to be split into 2 who knows!

I’m really loving this Laserdisc series Daisuke. I have The 39 Steps on Blu-Ray, so I really love seeing the first release of the film by Criterion here. I guess I never realized it was released so early into the Collection, but it’s still cool to see. Thank you for the great work you do here Daisuke and I hope you have a great day!

Daisuke, have you ever come across any explanation as to why The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes did not contain any supplemental materials after Citizen Kane and King Kong's deluxe releases?

  • @DaisukeBeppu

Hello and thank you for your question. I don't know. But if I were to speculate, I could assume that putting these packed LD releases at the time would have involved a certain budget, and Criterion was a different thing than it currently is. It could be a matter of budgeting, and having to choose which titles in its initial collection of early releases were to have special features and which others would have more streamlined releases. But then again, this is merely my best guess.
