Fantastic discussion! I knew I had to make it out to this one. I’m glad you got so much out of this series and let us all in on your journey, turning it into great communal events, such as these streams. I would love to hear you possibly do a discussion about Tavore since I know you have a lot more thoughts and feelings on her that you couldn’t really focus on since there was so much to talk about already. However much or little Malazan discussion you do though, through these streams I have become a fan of yours, not just your positive feelings on the series, so I look forward to any discussions you do regardless, like your chatting with nutts, cause I think they are a great communal space. Crokus & Apsalar's reunion was sweet

For me the last scene between fiddler and the young man it's a eco of the scene between Whiskyjack and Paran. Paran wants to be a great warrior and a name in the recognize, and Whiskeyjack basically said to him to try to live not to bring the attention of the gods. On the other hand, for a moment it seems fiddler will give the same advice to the young man, but instead he said to him that the world always needs more soldier, for me that phrase it's the way fiddler recognize the worth of all they did, and that he doesn't regret his journey. History it's written thanks to the sacrifice of the unwitnessed and the fallen.

I feel like this wasn’t mentioned in the video but Karsa’s arc and getting to the scene with the dying old man under a canvas brought me to tears: “It wasn’t too much, to take a frail figure into one’s arms for those last moments of life. Yeah it was so so good

The crystal City is the construct of Icarium.... Who built it to make him remember everything he had forgotten.. Because it is in a way, a record house of what has happened (how, not sure). When the snake goes through it, that kid touches the crystals, and get the information the same way icarium was supposed to.

I honestly really love the idea of Kaminsod being from our world. After all, much like him, we too were brought into this story. As Kaminsod said, "...we open the old book." Note how he states "We" and then tells us, "Listen then to these words carried on [my] breath." If we do not read and bear witness to his words, then he can not share what he has written. And if we are a part of it, then he must be in our world. And he in fact does exist in our world (well, two "he-s" anyway) which feeds right into Philip's theory of Kam-in-Sod being in fact, Cam-and-Steve. Both of whom are in fact real, and bless Hood's balls for that.

Another amazing discussion from all my favorite Ascendants! The reveal of Tavore's necklace was one of the most ballsy things I've ever read. It's obvious that she must have been a Talon this whole time, but the subtle way that's revealed is something a lot of readers can (and sadly have) missed on their read of TCG, when it's a singular answer to at least half a dozen questions I had going into the final book. That knowledge has made my current reread as intriguing as the knowledge of Kaminsod's narration. Thanks again to all of you for 3 hours of great reflection :)

I was told going in Erikson stuck to landing, he absolutely did, but I was not prepared for how emotionally powerful that ending would hit with me. Only finished it an hour ago so I'll get more passionate as goes.

I finished The Crippled God last night and I just finished watching this discussion. I loved it so much. This series is honestly incredible, and I'm very glad to have read it. But also, I'm really grateful that you guys have discussed this series at such length. I *REALLY* appreciate it, and all the discussions brought a lot more to the books than I could have gotten out for myself. So, thank you to Steven Erikson and Ian Esslemont for writing Malazan, and thank you to Jimmy, Allen, Philip, A.P., Johanna, Andy and all the Malaztubers for your contributions. It greatly enriches the experience and I don't think I could have appreciated the books nearly enough without you guys

Such a great discussion everyone! caught some of this live. I don't know that I realized it at the time but reading these books changed me as a person in ways no other fantasy book has even approached and the re-read as everyone has said cemented that. I'd love to see as many Malazan videos as you want to put out Jimmy. Such a joy to see you all have similar journeys. Learning to truly consider the world from other's shoes with a lens of compassion and that compassion isn't just a feeling but must be an action. I also think that in talking with and listening to others about the books helps drive the lessons home.

Brilliant!! Again I never cease to learn something new or gain a clearer insight into these brilliant books from listening to these conversations. I’m done with the ten and am frankly feeling a little lost. I was reading the last chapter stranded in an airport last night and literally had to get up several times to seek some privacy because I was so overcome with emotion. Some much about this book that I love and it is certainly now my favorite. Thank you friends for letting me “walk” with you all.

Not sure if you cover it here but something else that really stood out to me was the crippled God saying he would write “the Book of the Fallen”. Idk how literal I was supposed to take that in regards to the meta narrative of the series. Seems like an AP question haha

Very fun. Now you get to spend a lot of time watching all kinds of spoiler vids. AP does have one just on the opening scene with the weather vane. For me the reread wad a completely different experience. A lot of foreshadowing is more obvious, the epigraphs make more sense and you aren't as focused on the lasers and fireballs. It is the quiet places in between that really stood out for me. For example, since I knew the end of the Chain of Dogs already, Squint became much more impactful. I am curious after all of these discussions and observations, how it might change how you read GRRM now that you get a glimpse behind the author's curtain and looking at the writing.

I've been reading ASOIAF as I go through Malazan and it's been so great. I think it's actually enhanced my enjoyment of that series and I'm confident it has changed the way I'll read books in the future.

Ah, I hate missing the live streams, now I have a three hour video to try and watch sometime 😂 Glad you enjoyed Malazan, it's a unique experience to be sure.

2:28:00-ish - Tavore did try to kill Ganoes! She swings as she hears him approaching. He catches her wrist. My takeaway wasn't that she didn't have the fight left in her; it was actually the difference between Ganoes and Felisin that gave us this alternate outcome. Felisin, an innocent youth (I'll fight people on that xD), didn't even expect that she needed to defend herself, and so Tavore's strike caught her completely unaware, and killed her. Ganoes has been through hell and back, fighting in battles and wars, etc. He catches Tavore's hand. Because he knows the world, and knows he needs to expect that. And how perfect is that? In this book, where the innocence of children and the horrifying reality that so many are thrust into because of circumstances beyond their control is made front and center. The mirror of these two encounters was, for me, the most heartbreaking thing about the entire series. I cried and cried and cried. It was amazing. Thanks for this chat! I know I'm way late to the party here, but I just finished TCG this morning, and I've been watching these discussions with each book as I've finished.

The Crippled God didn't hit that hard on my first read. I thought it was an ok conclusion, but on my second, third and now I've lost track of retreads, it makes me ugly cry in several places.

Mallick Rel is great. Yall are just (trippin) pissed for the Chain. Easily the smartest character in the lore, pure Machiavellian genius. Top 5 character. Speaking of (and I'm not a fan of Erikson characters): 1. Brys/Yedan 2. Tavore 3. Paran 4. Mallick Rel 5. Kallor Favorite book is Midnight Tides, easily. I did not like nor found as good antagonists neither the Liosan nor the Forkrul, however the action was fucking neat. Probably the most insane conclusion after Unholy Consult. Kaminsod really grew on me, although I didn't like the twist. Great talk.
