I agree with this completely. I recently ran into a major road block on a 30x30 large floral piece. I scraped off the roses NINE times. NINE! I actually thought I might scrape a hole in the canvas...everything you talked about went through my head: I'm not an artist. I suck. Roses suck. I wasn't meant to paint roses. Its a sign from the universe!!! lol. But on that ninth try, it happened. It suddenly came together and the roses magically appeared on the canvas just as I'd imagined all along. It just took that many times to find the rose in my chaos. If I've learned anything, its keep going. I think if I had stopped and had to learn this one lesson over the course of nine different paintings I may have given up completely. But now not only did I not give up, I'm fully confident I can do it again and that, to me is progress.

You said that we learn in hindsight, and I think that’s true! Sometimes after I do a piece I dream about that piece! I dream about doing the process with the changes that I’ve decided would be best! Sometimes I plan pieces in my sleep as well! Or if I’m really in the zone creating a piece but I have to stop because I have to sleep, I will dream about finishing the piece! So when I wake up, I literally try to finish it right away. Otherwise it’s going to be on my mind until I’m able to finish!

As far as "knowing what you're doing before you start" I agree with Raffi -- it is both a leading and a following, that's a great way of putting it. A good teacher teaches you how to avoid mistakes. A great teacher teaches you how to fix them. Rafi's Dad sounds like a great teacher! And I think the feeling of needing to have everything planned beforehand, that's a fear of making mistakes speaking; because of not being able to believe that one can fix mistakes once they happen. It's true, though, that some mediums are extremely difficult to fix mistakes with, such as wire-work (because if you overwork the wire, it snaps), and if a mistake is made, you have to throw it away and start again. But that *still* isn't the end of the world, because the work you put in to the first version, you learned stuff from it (even if it is learning what *not* to do) and that learning you bring to the next version. Another thing, people are different; some people stress out because they don't have a plan, and some people are happier when they don't have a plan. (J versus P in the Meyers-Briggs personality typing system, if you're curious). In regard to not having a plan and not knowing the desired outcome, well, that's when you play, isn't it? There have been times when I've sat looking at the screen for one of my digital pieces (digital art done with a fluid-art base is one of my things) and I have no idea what I will do with it, so I play around with colours, and I play and I play and I play, and suddenly something beautiful comes out, that I could never have planned for. And sometimes I stop at that point because it feels complete, and sometimes I go on in a more directed fashion because the whatever-it-was sparked an idea that was the beginning of something. Commissions... I haven't done commissions as such, but I've participated in exchanges, where each participant creates a work for one of the other participants (kind of like a Secret Santa for creatives) and that is like a commision, in that one is making a work *for* someone, and by golly I love the challenge of that. Kind of less stressful than an actual commission, because nobody is paying you money for it, but still that mix of exciting and scary and outside-your-comfort-zone. But please, no, I don't want to be *terrified* ! That gets into paralysed-with-fear territory. Rafi: "Sometimes it becomes a crap-turd golden nugget." LOL!

Crap Turd Golden Nugget is priceless. OMG in so many ways lol. I am also in respect of being terrified as part of the process. Love your commission Rafi, I have never thought of doing couples with their spirit animals. How cool is that? Most of the time I have a bit of a concept of what I am looking to explore, but that is all. I actually write to my Muse what I want help in exploring and write that on the canvas and then I paint my first layer background as an abstract with three or four colours and let it dry. I find that Ideas jump out at me from the abstract and I have a background started instead of looking at a plain canvas. Sometimes I have themes depending on what I am going through in my personal life like we are a connected, or a journey through healing. My theme this year seems to be learning to fly. With this being Inktober, there are various prompts that look like great fun, but this year I am running on deadlines and can't participate but I think I would like to do that next year. Recently an art friend did a free eye drawing class. 5 minutes a day for five days. I thought hey I have five minutes a day and at the end I was very pleased at how she had taken a fairly complex aspect of the human face and made it a simple to follow step by step process. I wish I had that superpower. I love the variety of how we all create and I love how there is always more room to evolve. Onward and Upward in the Great Adventure!

I love watching how you create a piece. I sometimes feel as if the steps I take are wrong, or that artists wouldn't as lost as I am to try some ridiculous moves. But watching your videos made me realize that each artist forges and discovers his/her own path through our creativity. We are presented with a situation and our creativity and intuition lead us to make choices and even make up the steps to bring those choices out of us. In my opinion, that's where authenticity lies, not only in art but in life. I tend to oscillate from the three types of MO, but mostly operate from the third one, digging up the piece out of the page or canvas, which fills me with terror but is exhilarating at the same time. Thanks for your content.

I have two main sketchbooks. The first is for studying, anatomy, flowers whatever. The second is my no judgment book. No matter what I draw in this one I am not allowed to be rude about it to myself. I can erase as much as I like, tear up the paper, do whatever: no judgment. Doing this, I'm more relaxed, I want to use the first so I can create better in the second and I've discovered by accident that I actually like sketching anthromorphic characters. In the beginning of the second the first page notes the books intention and I always glance at it to remind myself. This is a huge help to my anxiety.

Well first thank you both for what you do, and being open about your creative process. I've just a week ago come across you guys and I am going through this at this very moment so through my searching for answers maybe the alga rhythm directed me to you both. First you both are awesome, respect. As for the 3 different creative processes you were talking about, and asking people to comment on. Well i like the third prosess, when i become too familiar with a prosess or technique I get bored and very uneasy. I then cease believing i am an artest, which drives me into the complete unknown and scary world of the unknown. There funnily enough I find my place, and the more i don't know the more creative my work becomes. At the moment I'm painting a 2 meter canvas, I'm doing something I've never done before. I've no idea what the hell im doing, which normally i would have at least a vague idea. I started by putting colors on the canvas at random with no thought or process, then allow what will be will be. This scared me to death and left me feeling really really vulnerable, but challenged me at the same time and I've yet to see the end result. It seems to be picking up momentum, and something is taking form, good or bad is to early to say yet. I've painted professionally for the last 22 years, from canvas work to large scale commissioned murals. But mainly figurative, and edging to surreal. Anyway i felt like i wanted to reply to this video, even if it is a year ago and to thank you guys for what you do. You came at the right time 😁

Commissions r different tho. I know what it needs to b but I trust it will come to me as I go. And that’s why I Love art I don’t need to plan it all out as I used to in my corporate job👍🏻

Been thinking about this. To be a professional it’s easy to think should know but actually it’s knowing it’s possible, finding out how and adapting until happy. Definitely not a linear path step by step. Just trusting. I believe in my natural connection to art and being comfortable among the mistakes as correct them.

knowing what voice your art has...important! Creating that voice....priceless! Priceless that leads to pricing. Stay in tune with your your art. Figure out what you love to create and keep doing that! It might seem repetitive to you, but to us (the world) we will notice subtle growth that you wont! We will see you evolve and love the outcome. What you create is so important...it comes from inside you. Since there is only one you, your work is unique and it belongs to you. Hey Rafi- Hw long did it take for you to get that voice? That special one that sends you to the canvas? Have a good one guys. Love love love the content

I have a lot of trouble getting started especially when I am not making anything for anyone in particular... (has been going on years since I made anything substantial other than commissioned graphic design work (my other hat)) I am also in the fight of what a piece is supposed to look like before hand as opposed to letting the art work itself and evolve and coming to terms with the end result whatever that might be! Thanks again guys, I follow you religiously! keep up the good work.

I spent the last months fighting hard with my art. I never thought of punching the canvas though. That woman's question and about it being easier when she was younger is me exactly! Making art requires constant decision making. I tried working sheerly intuitively and dislike the results. They look better when I preplan, but am open to changes. Im always terrified when I paint. It was fascinating to hear you talk about this because I work in a similar way. I have to remain flexible because of the material I work with. I make a sculpture out of clay but I add a peice of wet leather. As the leather dries it changes in way that I can't predict so I have a vague idea of what I will get but I can't fully predict what it will look like once its done. It also depends on the season, the humidity and the temperature. The faster the leather dries the less change I have to pull out details. I like being surprised and have learned to let the material do its thing. I almost always paint them and it's a similar deal there too. I will go through multiple colors to get it right. I absolutely loved watching your paintings come to life. The textures you achieved are so exciting. I'll bet the people that ordered that commission loved it.

Just winging it on a commission? Oh heck no! That would totally stress me out! All power to you. For me, all my experimentation happens with my personal sketches and art work. Sometimes I post my meanderings on social media where every now and them some one will ask me if I can do a piece in the style of something I've experimented with. For most of my client work I submit a few sketches of ideas so that they know what they are going to get. Of course, being that it is art, there is always a bit of an element of wondering how it's going to turn out. But for the most part, I have a no surprises policy with running my art business. With that, I have a knack of making my clientele very happy, and I get a lot of repeat business.

I've watched this 3 times and it just isn't loosening up my white nuckles. I paint canvases and bottles. One of my coworkers and his wife love my work. He brought me a gorgeous bottle to paint for him. They have been waiting for months. I'm frozen. It's in my wheelhouse. I adore painting bottles. I just love him. He is always so supportive. If I paint something I'm proud of I love to shoot him a pic. He is supportive and I know I can get confirmation from him. I guess I just want it to be perfect for them. They would never tell me but I would be so sorry if they were just expecting something more. Or better. Or just so different. I have been binge drinking your "you can do it " stuff but I can't jump. I'll keep trying.

Sometimes you just have to let go and do it. My son in law challenged me to draw a specific scene for my daughter. It is her favorite comic scene and I felt it was beyond my skill level. Then he unexpectedly passed away. It took me three years to draw it for her. Every time I started I thought of him and I didn’t want to mess it up, especially since we were very close. She didn’t know he wanted me to draw it for her. All she knew was he had challenged me to draw something special. I finally did it, and my daughter absolutely loves it. As Rafi said, you got this.

Hi, I stumbled upon your youtube videos a little while ago and I LOVE you two! I have a question. I used to paint 35 yrs ago.... I started painting again for a year now. But I've been signing my paintings Nicki. Not my real name. My real name is too long to sign. Have you seen this before? Is this something I should do or should I just sign my name? I will be exposing some paintings in December for 2 months and they are asking for my name. For now I will put Nicki and in parenthesis my full name because I already signed the art work Nicki. But for the future.... what is your experience and knowledge say? Thank you Nicki

Rafi is a shortened version of his name. Does that help?

@@seemsfamiliar3888 Hi, thanks for the info. Although Nicki is not really a shorter version of my name.... I'll think about it some more. For now I'll continue with Nicki.
