You should always remember horses are herd animals, with a mind of their own and they weigh half a ton. A 9 stone jockey with a little stick ain't gonna make them do anything they don't want to do.

I have seen this before. The horse isn't into just running to run, a loafer as my boss called them when I was working at a racing stable, but they do take issue with another horse passing and getting in front of them.

My pony was like that 😂 thoroughbred X Connemara. When he was having a lazy day and we were at a show jumping competition. I would take him to a quiet area have him stand still. Have my sister canter by beside him and let him do a jump start. He could never resist. And it sure as hell perked him up.

It’s just herd instinct. The horse didn’t want to run (maybe due to being winded or sore) but the instinct kicked in when another horse raced by. I see it with my horses in pasture all the time-I’ve even seen my horses go from laying down and nearly falling asleep to almost leaping off of the ground to take off after whatever horses are running past.

​@@Messi-sm8lhif it goes on instinct they will only stop when they littarly collapse so it was probably a refusal of exhaustion but because the other horse came by it acted with its last powers anyway. Doesn't mean it was correctly done by the rider tho to make him continue imo.

The horse wasn't exhausted. This is an extreme example, but this is a horse that "hangs" once he has the lead. A lot of horses love to run with a herd but they get clever and figure when they have reached the lead the race is over and they stop running hard, waiting for the other horses to catch up or pass them. Then they start running again. For them its a game. One horse that did this was the Kentucky Derby winner, Silver Charm. His final run for the wire had to be very carefully timed so he'd poke his head in front right at the end of the race. He won 11 races but lost 9 graded stakes races that way and millions in winnings.

The horse wasn't exhausted. He got bored out there on his own. Once he got company he went again. Horses lose concentration just like humans

He is not exhausted they stop when they have had enough. I cannot understand the mentality that they are forced. The whip hurts. Give me a break. There some valid comments by people who know in this thread learn about horses. They are interesting and they love to race.

That’s like my horse when she’s first she’s so calm, but when she’s not first she runs so fast that it feels like I’m gonna fall off😂❤

no he doesn´t race horses are drugged before the races and they are raced too young, horses with two years old are babies, they are not fully developed .

It’s using the rein and hands , legs pushing forward to get the horse momentum, without striking out on the wrong leg I have seen Melbourne cup runners being hit over and over again with the crop , this jockey was calm obviously knew his horse, in New Zealand the ‘over the shoulder’ use of the crop is forbidden If there are excessive marks on any horse on the hind quarters ( or neck ) there’s an enquiry in the use of excessive use of the crop and force

I don't think it has much to do with wanting to race, but with dominance. The other horse was running and this horse wanted to be lead. The horse have no idea or concept of what a "race" is and just have natural instincts of being a dominant animal

Horses always want to run, it's in their DNA. Doesn't mean they all want to race though.

The way the horse was just like “a few miles left Im as fast a the fastest car on the earth I don’t have to keep going.” Until he had his challenge he was like “ok well sense this horse right here is just lemme speed up just a little more faster than YES WE WON!” But that’s so true

You are a bit messed up. I think number 1 learn about racing and what is required and understand that if horse lived running wild in paddocks their life is not that great and the deaths quit awful. 2 Racing gives them a life and a purpose so don't deny them that. They are well looked after well fed and believe it or not they thrive with the attention and purpose. 3. Racing can always improve become part of a solution. Shorter jumps less runners there are ways to make it safer.
