I watched a documentary on Showtime about the Cowsill's that painted a darker picture of this family, each one of the kids told about how thier father was abusive and ruined them after taking over as manager and even went on to tell about what they thought were millions of dollars made that they never saw one cent of and have no idea where it went,it was just sad what these kids went through you would just have to watch it and see it for yourself, and they aren't the only child stars who endured that kind of stuff the Jackson's went through the same thing as I'm sure many others have they appear on these tv specials and look all happy but we have no clue as to what thier lives are like behind the scenes.

I'm thinking Chinese, from when the British colonized Hong Kong in the 1800s. The British also subjugated the Irish terribly, and I say this because this whole family looks very Irish, and yes, with something a little "exotic" mixed in for sure. I saw Irish people who looked like this in Ireland, and wondered why they looked mixed Asian... A lot of British people like Pattie Boyd (when young), Steve Marriott of Small Faces, and Jimmy Page (esp. OLD) all have what has to be visible Hong Kong Chinese in them. I would bet you it's this. Some great-great-great grandparent, probably female. They all have that dark, silky straight hair, and some almond eyes. Very good looking family.

Immensely talented kids. I love their harmonies and their general vibe. But what an excruciatingly cornball 1960s entertainment style was imposed on them here... I say this as someone who grew up during this era and watched The King Family specials and Dean Martin shows and probably watched this thing when it was on. And I doubtless enjoyed it at the time. (I'm the same age as Susan Cowsill.) The Cowsill kids are vibrant and fresh but their mother is like an automaton, unfortunately. Especially when she speaks. And they keep trying to make Susan Cowsill into Shirley Temple. The veneer of normal family life was such an intense sell back then that nothing you saw on TV was anything like real---except for the Vietnam War footage on the news. That transition must've been incredibly jarring for adults to watch---stuff like this and then the 10:00 nightly news with war and the seemingly endless student unrest of that time. Wow. The campus violence actually scared me off going to college---I didn't think it sounded safe to attend. (My parents didn't influence me in that. They wanted me to go.) I remember the war news being on but not watching it, just that it was always there somewhere. And the front page of the newspaper every day had the death counts of our soldiers.

The real Partridge Family
Their father "Bud" put the torpedo on their career with his antics. What a shame that he destroyed their careers. But they still got "it".

I am familiar with some of the Cowsills' songs, but honestly never really took notice of this 'family' unit until recently, thanks to KZread. However, I am old enough that I should have known more of this family group; that I was born in '67. It was. They were supposed to star in it until They actually met the producers, who realised that some of them probably couldn't act. The idea that a family who sings like the Cowsills would necessarily be able to act well enough to do a tv show seems ridiculous. Oh wait, I just remembered about thirty “family shows” in which the actors also can’t act.
I grew up in New England, Rhode Island was on the radar always. Cowsills were home turf. They were a part of a New Englanders kids growing up.

Family dysfunction messed everything up with their crazy father.
How tragically ironic at 5:50, Ebsen gave that speech about their "father" Bud, when he was directly responsible for their break-up in '72, and the tragedy the family endured later.
So weird that Bud never let Richard be part of the group during its heyday.
That family was abused by the father... Susan was sent to live with her oldest brother because the father would get drunk & molest her .. How they became so successful with such an abusive home life is baffeling.. All that abuse took its toll just the same... The oldest was a heroin addict for yrs until his death during a hurricane in N.O. The others struggled with failed marriages & addictions as well , but eventually pulled it together & reformed the band , minus a few members ... I saw them perform a few yrs ago & I was blown away at just how great they sound... I guess its a story of tragedy mixed with great success....
I love how certain topics were big in the sixties but never again. Like when Buddy Ebsen mentions "the generation gap". That exists in every era (I'm confused by Taylor Swift's popularity) but was only really a big deal in the sixties because it was much starker and you had the war and hair styles blah blah blah. It sounds quaint now.

Partidge Family was fictional but much better family unit than the Cowsill family...imo
