Alexandre Dumas's The Count of Monte Cristo relates the tale of Edmond Dantès, a young sailor wrongfully imprisoned due to a conspiracy by his enemies.
After years on a remote island used to house political prisoners, where he is tutored by another prisoner who conveys his vast knowledge of the world and confides the location of a trove of treasure, Dantès escapes.
Using his education and his friend's wealth, he establishes a new identity as a count and sets about getting revenge. Through clever plots and skillful manipulation, he takes down the authors of his entrapment one by one.
Full of swashbuckling adventure, the novel has enchanted generations of readers with its delicious vindication of its noble and resourceful protagonist.
French writer Alexandre Dumas’s The Count of Monte Cristo was first published 1844-45. Much like his character the Count of Monte Cristo, Dumas lived lavishly, traveled widely, and had many adventures. To keep up his lifestyle, Dumas wrote prolifically and gained popularity through works such as The Three Musketeers.
The adventurous novel The Count of Monte Cristo contains many enduring themes, including betrayal and vengeance, as after being falsely accused, Dantès escapes prison and believes Divine Providence guides him in vengeance; retribution, as Dantès tailors each offender's punishment to his particular evil deeds and weaknesses; and wealth and power, as Dantès gains power partly through the treasure and partly through his own ingenuity and application of knowledge. Important motifs include transformation, the sea, and ambition.
