The Council of Elrond Scene 2- The Fellowship of the Ring

Ойын-сауық

ELROND: It must be taken deep into Mordor and cast back into the firey chasm from whence it came. (the Ring continues to whisper) One of you........... must do this
There is silence
BOROMIR: One does not simply walk into Mordor. Its black gates are guarded by more than just orcs. There is evil there that does not sleep and the great eye is ever watchful. Tis a barren wasteland, riddled with fire and ash and dust. The very air you breathe is a poisonous fume. Not with ten thousand men could you do this. (shaking his head) It is folly
LEGOLAS: (jumping to his feet) Have you heard nothing Lord Elrond has said? The Ring must be destroyed
GIMLI: and I suppose you think you're the one to do it.
BOROMIR: and if we fail what then ? (he stands up) What happens when Sauron takes back what is his ?
GIMLI: (jumps to his feet) I will be dead before I see the Ring in the hands of an elf
The elves stand up to back Legolas. The men do the same, they all start talking and arguing
GIMLI: Never trust an elf
Gandalf shakes his head. Frodo watches the arguing in the reflection in the Ring. Gandalf stands to join the arguments
GANDALF: Do you not understand that while we bicker amongst ourselves, Sauron's power grows?! None can escape it! You'll all be destroyed
Frodo stares at the Ring as he hears these words uttered:
Ash nazg durbatuluk, ash nazg gimbatul,
ash nazg thrakatuluk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul
The people he can see in the Ring are suddenly covered with a Ring of fire
FRODO: (standing up) I will take it (they continue to argue, not hearing him) I will take it (Gandalf closes his eyes in sorrow) I will take the Ring to Mordor (they all stop and look at him in awe) Tho, I do not know the way
GANDALF: I will help you bear this burden Frodo Baggins, as long as it is yours to bear. (he walks and stands behind him)
ARAGORN: (who has so far not joined in the arguments, stands) If by my life or death I can protect you, I will (he walks up to Frodo and kneels before him) You have my sword
Gandalf smiles and looks at Elrond who smiles
LEGOLAS: and you have my bow (he walks over to join the others)
GIMLI: and my axe (looking at Legolas who grimaces he too joins the others)
BOROMIR: You carry the fate of us all little one. (he walks towards them) If this is indeed the will of the Council, then Gondor will see it done
Peering through the bushes Sam shouts and runs to join Frodo
SAM: Mr Frodo's not going anywhere without me
ELROND: No indeed it is hardly possible to seperate you, even when he is summoned to a secret council and you are not!
Pippin and Merry are listening to all this from behind some pillars. The run in
MERRY: Wait! we're coming too!
They run and join the others. Elrond looks astounded
MERRY: You'd have to send us home tied up in a sack to stop us
PIPPIN: Anyway you need people of intelligence on this sort of mission ...........quest ..........thing
MERRY: Well that rules you out Pip
ELROND: (looks at the nine stood together) Nine companions... So be it! You shall be the Fellowship of the Ring!
PIPPIN: Great! Where are we going?

It's because he didn't know they were there. He knew that Sam was there and he wasn't surprised. But he didn't know Pippin and Merry were there, and it shocked him. Very little can get by the ears and eyes of elves. But we know that hobbits can because in The Hobbit Bilbo snuck around an elvish town for weeks and they never heard a thing. Little details like this show how much Peter Jackson cares about the trilogy.

I actually thought that this was Frodo's finest hour. He went through hell to bring the One Ring to Rivendell, and wanted nothing more than to rid himself of it and go home. But when he saw how the Ring was causing discord even here, he stood up and offered to take it to Mordor, and with that incredibly unselfish gesture, the Fellowship was formed. Frodo united them with one single purpose.

I heard an explanation somewhere for Elrond’s different responses to Sam versus Merry and Pippin. Elves have such good hearing and eyesight that they have a complete awareness of their surroundings. Hobbits, on the other hand, are so light on their feet and can be so quiet that they’re one of the few races that can hide from elves if they wanted. Elrond knew that Sam was hiding in the bushes the whole time and was just wondering when he would come out of hiding (thus, his look of amusement). Elrond only knew about Merry and Pippin being there after they made their presence known. (thus, his look of “Where the fuck did you come from?!”).

Honestly, while Ian McKellen's famous reaction shot to Frodo stepping up gets all the plaudits (and rightly so - it's one of the best pieces of acting any of us will ever see), I also love the genuine warmth and happiness in Elrond's eyes when he's addressing Sam. He's a famously wise and kind person in Tolkien's world but he spends a lot of his time in LotR dealing with a faded world that's left him struggling to see much hope. Seeing such loyalty and such courage, especially from someone of Sam's humility, would be something for him to treasure, I think, small though it may be.

Frodo was anything but 'weak'. No one - NO ONE - could resist the power of the Ring...not even the likes of Galadriel and Gandalf. Sam was a simple soul who wanted nothing more than Rosie Cotton and the Shire. He carried the Ring for just a few hours, and he would have died for Frodo. I mentioned in another comment the genuine twinkle of happiness in his eyes when he's _technically_ telling Sam off for sneaking into a secret meetings is a real favourite little detail of mine. Elrond is famed for being wise and kind - Imladris famed for being a place where the innocent will find succour and sanctuary with nothing asked in return - but he world has wearied him a little by this point with its squabbling and its selfishness so there's almost a... gratitude in his delivery, as if Sam served as a timely reminder that the very noblest of qualities can be found anywhere. Sam may not think himself important but, pointed in the right direction, it's ultimately the courage and unyielding devotion to each other of the supposedly "unimportant" that's going to hold evil at bay as much as that of the great and the good.

I was looking for this comment. Back when this was in theaters, half of the audience laughed during the silent scene. This was one of the funniest things about watching Lord of the Rings in Theaters. We would react together in unison. Everyone felt like they were connected to it, and fully where in middle earth. No one ever felt like they were watching a movie. We all felt transported to another universe. There's not a lot of movies that can make that jump for the audience.

It is interesting watching this after '"The Hobbit", knowing that both the elves (Thranduil, father of Legolas) and Gimli (Son of Gloin), knew that Frodo (Baggins) was heritage of the burglar (Bilbo) that finally acomplished the mission of 'Smaug - The Dragon'. This is the reason, why neither the elves nor the dwarves doubted Frodo's decision.

The scene of them bickering is important aspect - to showcase how the ring can influence all of them individually to distrust one another and to fight, allowing the ring to get closer to its true master. Don't get me wrong, Frodo could fall too, just like Smeagol (Gollum) did but it could take him time to do so (as seen in the movies later) but he could have longer time to fall to its influence than these humans (Elves and Dwarves) who had all tasted the bitterness of hard life, temptation and struggle compared to a Hobbit from the Shire.

The Lord of the Rings is as much a story of Frodo and the quest to destroy the ring as it is a story of Aragorn reluctantly assuming the heavy burden of his birthright. On the one hand you have the lessons of friendship, loyalty, and selfless sacrifice from Sam and Frodo's story arch, and on the other you have a lesson on bravery, integrity, and personal courage from that of Aragorn. This reflects Tolkien's own life experiences in the Great War and a keen look into his own mind. I think this very brief scene in the LOTR sets up the rest of the narrative for those two story archs and is fundamental in shaping all characters involved. LOTR is truly a masterpiece of literary prowess that should be on any bookshelf, but it is also a timeless piece of Western literature that will continue to persevere generation after generation.

Well in the Hobbit movies I’d say his perception was so different because he was living in seclusion in Mirkwood under h Thranduil’s then narrow views. At the end of the Battle of the Five Armies he sets out to leave the elven kingdom behind and venture into the world. His eyes are likely far more open by now, and also his fighting is less extravagant in LotR, likely I’d say he’s learned to conserve energy and use only the necessary movements to be quick and efficient a fighter. They put that little extra tag in the hobbit, of thranduil telling legolas to find the Dunedine, that there’s a young ranger there he should meet in the wild known as Strider, but his real name Legolas should find for himself. The Aragorn connection was a nice little touch.
