Yeah, when he started off saying he'd not even had an engine light, then said £1500 per year to extend warranty more than paid for itself, I knew something didn't add up.

At least he was honest, he could have pretended that nothing really went wrong and left it at that. He presented it how he sees it, it's for the buyer to decide if it's a car for them or not. Also the 14K is not repairs. That includes all he's running costs, regiration, fuel, servicing, tyres etc etc.

Yaris has more road presence.

Bet you wouldn’t have been so chirpy if that warranty hadn’t of paid out for the screen and turbo. People forget that even second hand, your running a £100k car and have to accept the associated costs as they age. Having said that, those running costs are the same as a decent mortgage payment. But as long as you’re enjoying it, and off setting the bills, fair play. Man has to spend money on something.

I will get an amazing car once I have paid got a mortage and paid it off but until then the most important thing is owning my own home. This is why most people don't get these flashy cars until they are middle aged.

Never sure whether you are trying to convince us or yourself mate . Those running cost by anybody’s standards are horrendous. I’ve had Land Rovers and they really, really do go wrong,but if you can put up with that then you are right in one respect,they are great things to drive ,you’ve just got to be prepared to spend your hard earned to keep it going.

i've owned older discoveries and defenders for years and the ones i have had just didn't break other than when i made mistakes in self servicing them, cocked up a cambelt change on one which then snapped, even that was cheap and easy to fix, rest has all just been servicing costs, discs, pads, oild filters shocks etc.. all consumables.

I agree, only driven it for 20K (from 52K to 72K) and he had problems with windscreen/defroster, suspension, gear box service and turbo leak of £ thousands? And £120 for ONE after-market bulb? Granted he didn't have to pay thousands from his pocket as he took out extended warranty, but all those things did break down one after another and cost you time and money. This is neither cheap nor reliable by any standard.

I didn't look at leasing. But PCP earlier this year was about £5k down and £1k per month for a lightly optioned vogue se 3.0. 3yrs, 10k/yr.

That’s an interesting point but I think to lease a new RR same spec as this would be around £1k per month and I’d be tied in for 48 months

We only live once so I have driven older jags, mercs, amgs and repaired as I have gone along. My journey will have been a good one, but if you insist on spending the same money for a vw in cloth with manual seats then we're just on different roads. I wish some people would just man up and take the courage to at least try to drive something nice without worrying all the time.

I have always spent a decent amount on cars over the years probably too much a few times but never regretted it as enjoy driving. After owning saloons estates SUV's, I'm preferring the new hot hatches that have come out over the last few years they come packed with all the mod cons but drive so much better and just makes for a more engaging experience.

I did! A mint '07 s/c vogue...68k when i bought it 2 years ago, awesome car, 98k price tag new....can see why, no squeaks, rattles, had to replace discs an pads, thats it0

I totally agree Matt, I had a range Rover Vogue SE supercharged for a number of years and it was in a different class to any other vehicle that I’ve owned. It is the best & gave a driving experience like nothing else on the road.

I got my D4 around the same time as you and your RR (March last year for me) and, for just about the first time owning a car, I have pretty much 0 desire to change it. Nothing out there really catches my eye, outside of a Velar, and I feel no need to change it. Plus, of course, with the PanaCov flu going around, everything has suddenly been 'adjusted'. Up... The D4 did need a gasket changing, at around $670 or so, but that's it. Starts first time, runs sweet, drinks like a fish (SC V6 petrol), fits everything and still looks the part when arriving at places. And long may it last.

I'd be glad of the double glazing as it would muffle my inconsolable wailing after I've just spent £150 on a bulb 😫

I've owned my L405 V8 for over 4 years. My only costs (other than fuel, road tax & servicing) are 4 tyres & one rear light cluster, which got damaged whilst parked. That's it. It's also started to increase in value. Can't go wrong.

Really interesting where you set the bar on ‘reliability’: I’ve just completed 70,000 miles (80-150k) in a 59 reg Volvo XC70 with 3 services, one broken spring, a cambelt scheduled change, a broken washer bottle, a set of tyres and two headlamp bulbs. That’s ‘normal’ to me after 15 or so years of Volvos and Saabs! Would have run a mile tbh from the list of faults you describe on the Range Rover! 😀

So would most people thats a normal level of wear and tear for the type of car you just mentioned. I had a VW Golf mk4 2003 model bought in 2008 with 180k miles by 2019 it had 257,000 miles and in that time it had a new battery, two new wiper motors, a new radiator which was not the fault of the car but more the brick that hit it after flying off the back of a skip. It had a new rocker cover gasket which was not essential but helped stop it leaking 0.5l of oil every year and was cheap. Other than that it has just had normal wear and tear stuff. The big weakness on that car was the wiper motor and that was only £70 a pop. It had its original springs, original clutch and original battery until 2015 the car just wore really well. It also had one cambelt in that time but I consider that under to be under wear and tear.

Love the Volvo XC70. I own 5!

Owned a 2015 RR L405 3.0 TDV6... The only thing i had issue with was the particle filter, had to get it cleaned twice as it went into limp mode without actually giving me a warning. Apart from that i loved it

Very interesting - thanks. As an owner of a two year old one, I agree with everything , except one point - the three litre engine is fine. It has all the power and performance you need and is surprisingly economical. No need for the V8.

Great car! By the way, the road tax in The Netherlands would be 3300 euros per year for the SDV8... so 585 is quite a bargain... but that's pounds :-)

Thanks Matt, I really have learnt a lot about these cars and am getting more sympathetic to your views. I have always, always wanted one, but I am not there yet. ( I can see why you had that warranty each year, the number and faults on that car are amazing). I need more practice in bullying my way around British roads and looking down my nose at people first- haha! My Puma drives like a train and hasn't had that many faults in 20 years of ownership..

Brilliant as usual. Recently sold my pre-facelift 18MY and miss it like mad. Concur with the views on warranty, it's essential and if you decide to get another, go for the auto side steps, you'll wonder how you managed without them. PS. Still waiting for that review of the Smart Roadster!!

I’d love a LR but I’m always conscious of the running costs (and that goes for all big cars not just a gorgeous LR) but at least watching you videos means I can still dream. Love all your videos, keep em coming 👍🏻

If you take off the cost of fuel over the 20000 miles then the maintenance costs still amount to approx £9700 which for just 20000 miles is an extortionate amount of money. Appreciate that there's a set of tyres in that bill but my god that's a crazy sum. Considering ownership of five years, for me anyway, at 12000 miles per annum, 60000 over five years, my maintenance bill could potentially be nudging 30 grand. I'll pass thanks 🙃

I'm amazed at how well the L405s have been holding on to their value. Land Rover truly moved the needle forward when they engineered this. To me, it's an aspirational model along the likes of a Bentley CGT and I look forward to owning one in the near future.

Very helpful Matt. I was amazed how expensive it was to run. Try a Lexus 450h. I have the 400h. I am somewhat surprised at your fuel economy. Yes they are lovely cars only if you can really afford to run them. Horses for courses.

We have the 450h 2013 had for a few years now. 27 mpg town 33 motorway. Other cost include (I think ) £155 road tax and service around £400. On that note the service at lexus is second to non. In lockdown the collected and dropped off the car from 30 miles away without charge. Recently they lent my wife a brand new on to go shopping while the car was serviced. It's not as good looking as the range rover, not as nice although the new on is better but crucially it works! Every time without fail never misses a beat even the suspension components have no issue on a very heavy car that is now ageing. ..then again we all went for the pretty girl knowing she would be trouble !

Been looking forward to this. I love em, I’m on my second L322 (after buying a lemon with my first but I need to tow a horse box out of muddy fields, and there’s nothing better) My current car is also a4.4 TDV8, and so far is running beautifully. I’ll replace it eventually, hopefully with an L405. Maintain it properly and stick v power in it occasionally and it’s as reliable as anything else.

Great vids as usual.. I wouldn’t mind longer more in depth videos though.. I reckon they’d go down well as you’re good at how u present your vids

There’s a cracking episode of Always Sunny In Philadelphia all about driving a brand new Range Rover it’s well worth a watch its hilarious 😂 Truly are the most complete cars on the road. You can show you have more money and get a Bentayga but you’d also be telling everybody that you like overpaying for stuff and have more money than sense. Range Rover is the king 👑

I do not, as a rule, like Land Rover products much - they have a totally justified reputation for poor reliability / build quality (and that goes for Jaguar as well / JD Power survey etc). The running costs you have outlined seem catastrophic on the surface however these are what? 70 or 80k cars new? so even when second hand they will still have 80k car running costs. I know you said this was really reliable but the litany of things you then went on to detail was rather a lot. With all that said I can still see the appeal to a point, they waft magnificently and are a commanding driving position/presence on the road with supreme comfort etc. Boring old world if we all liked the same things eh? :D

The overall costs may seem catastrophic, but all cars need fuel, tires, servicing, MOT's, warranties. If you took those costs out then the running costs aren't bad for a vehicle of that size. The list of actual things that have gone wrong outside of that isn't bad at all. The difference in running costs between this and a BMW X5, Porsche Cayenne or an Audi Q7 isn't a great deal, and they're also not the most reliable cars either!

Cheers Mate, Great video, makes me home sick as I used to live in Bramhall, now in Florida but miss the U.K. I own a 2010 L322 Autobiography and love it, wife drives a 2008 Supercharged white on white love these cars, they have got more reliable as the get newer as we started our Range Rover experience with an 2004 and 2006 HSE which I have to say they were money pits the latest two are great. Range Rovers are the best. Cheers again keep up the good work.

You will need to check the heated rear window--you will need it for keeping your hands warm whilst pushing it!

Bloody Hell! That review started so well, great car…cannot fault it! Best car money can buy! And then the costs…and they just keep coming, and coming, and coming. (I don’t think that is normal for most modern cars).I put 110K on my brand new 730d a few years back (all warranted and standard service with biggest cost brake discs and pads at £700) My best tip here, based on those sorts of costs would be to lease a brand new one for three years and then give it back before it all goes a bit pear shaped!!! Once had a neighbour that loved his Range Rover too, then one day he realised it was quite expense to run, his words ‘more than his house’ I thought it was a very honest review, and also think the Full Size RR is a great product, apart from…….yep reliability.

It's a positive as long as you're not pre occupied with the maintenance. Great vid.

100% agree with your comments, my own 4,4 se (2014) Firenze red looks and drives wonderfully, and like you mentioned is always pleasure to get back behind the wheel. Yes, I’ve also had some failed items but it has never let me down and all items have been covered by the warranty company - failed compressor and oil cooler leak all known issues. I cant recommend these vehicle enough, life really is too short, buy a good one and enjoy the feeling of driving something very special……

Current l320 owner, two inlet manifolds and EGR valves after three months of ownership, if you still can’t appreciate them at their worst. You don’t deserve to drive them at their best. (Goodwin,2020)

I’ve had my 2015 Vogue SE for 7 yrs, done 65,000 miles with very few issues. Spent no more than around £2.5k over that period with the exception of new tyres, break pads, servicing etc. Go off-road as well in it.

No more than 2500 wow thats not a good thing. For a car woth that original high purchase price they should be bulket proof for 100000 miles. 2500 over 7 years is horrendous

I have one too and not had any problems after 87,000 miles. Mine is the TDV6 which is powerful enough and I get almost 600 miles on one 86 litre tank of diesel! Quiet, comfortable, safe and fitted with General AT3 tyres, which last over 50,000 miles and the ability to go almost anywhere...mine is regularly used off-road. Most problems occur when the car is not maintained or used (battery/electrical issues result). Service costs and road tax is expensive - but less than a Bentley, which is inferior.

Love your videos! The “never EVEN pinged on an engine light” line made me chuckle though haha, the bar is pretty low here.

the only cars I have ever owned that did not "ping an engine light" were pre engine light cars

So the car that's never gone wrong has had a leaky turbo, faulty windscreen, control arms and a few other bits. People have a brand loyalty to LR, they are great cars to drive but for the money, they could do better on reliability.

I have a Honda CRV that's had to have suspension bits every MOT and other odd bits wrong for the last 3 years. Find me a car that is maintenance free. They don't exist and they all add up.

One thing that wasn't highlighted is that quite a few of these costs won't need to be paid again for some time. Sounds like most things have been done to keep it tip top, I wouldn't be surprised if the next 12 months was less than £5k for the year inc everything and possibly a lot less

Full size range definitely the best car ever. Not the quickest or most fun or even most luxurious. But the way it takes care of you with it’s road presence and style nothing can match this Even my grandad switched to RR Autobiographys since 2018 after owning several s classes Bentleys and rollers over the prior 20+ years

Being in the trade for 20 plus years, Ive had most of the rivals cayenne, x5, x6, various sports, full fat rangies etc. Had my fingers burnt on the last range I had. Ace suspension fault. The pick of the bunch for me is the Q7. Amazing build quality, great engines, air suspension and 7 seats. Nothing would get me out of this one so far. My sentiments for the Q7 are as yours with the rangie. It’s amazing at everything. Apart from maybe it’s sheer size.

I’ve just bought a 2018 Q7 Vorsprung and I was nodding along to the comments on effortlessness, comfort, making long trips feel like shorter ones etc. I test drove a few things and looked at a lot but the Q7 seemed a good bet for me and my tall kids and the mix of family trips it needs to support

quite good tbf, harsh ride, more so on m sport with runflats, turbo issues will occur around 90/100k if it’s not had on time servicing all its life. I’d go with the single turbo 3.0 d over the twin turbos for reliability.

Often the biggest cost.

Insurance and depreciation should probably be included in the cost per mile. That warranty appears to be paying for itself. Well done on the garage on quibble-free fixing of things.

well not much is depreciating now but a comparison must be relative to the alternative you'd buy it's not a zero sum calculation unless you intend to buy nothing.

I understand that some cars are more reliable than others but really it all comes down to maintenance: you look after your Range Rover and don't skimp on servicing hence it does run well and doesn't brake.

Well, great video. If anything it’s cemented my feeling, I could never buy anything that costs so much to run. Forget fuel and tax, that’s just a factor of the engine. The warranty and costs are crazy money for me. £900 for a service - what did that cover? Heated windscreen failure - why should it fail? Nobody ever replaces the one for the back windows. £1500 for a 12m warranty is £125 a month to know if something big goes bang they’ll pay for it. Meanwhile you’re still paying for new suspension arms and cv boots after how many miles? Gear box service is sound thinking.

The filament is extremely fine in the front screen so you can't see it (otherwise it'd block your view forward), so inherently, they are quite fragile. A stone chip can easily damage it. Rear filaments are much more robust.

Thank you for all your hard work you put into every video you make! I have heard about the Range Rovers being unreliable.... I believe it now... I was thinking of getting myself one at some point in the future - not any more. I have owed more than 30 cars in the last 20 years as I like trying new stuff, also test driven a lot more... I also fix every little bit on my cars so that they are perfect and in "as new" condition. But the cost you have got are well over the moon.... If you were leasing 4.4 P530 V8 First Edition 5dr Auto [2023] for 18 months this would have cost you £22,590 inc VAT without any worries you have had - and that is the top of the range Brand New with all the bells and whistles you could think of as far as I can tell (I am not a Range Rover specialist though)... Thank you for sharing!!!

Not a single thing for me to add here, this man has concisely and precisely said it all. On the button with the 4.4 SDV8, and once you have had one, thats it, these beasts are the business. My mate bought a brand new X7, very fancy, lots of electronics, (not that much in it in terms of cost an maintainance), but still not a patch on the RR as an overall package. I'm not going to tell you to sell the mrs (or mr), or sell the kids or a kidney and get one (I AM!!)... but if you can get one.... G

In the grand scheme of things and considering you purchased the warranty too the price of ownership over the 20k is dam good. I've always said look after the car and it will look after you.

Great vid Matt. I bought my 2015 SDV8 VSE last November. Love every journey. Only issue i've had was a coolant leak, covered by JLR warranty. Something I have asked them to look at though is a slight rattle/tinny noise between 1900-2700 revs under load. No diagnosis or fix though. I've been told 'they all do that'. Does yours?

@@niallcosgrove2816 on mine it was an exhaust heat shield. A really easy fix without even needing to go into the workshop.

Your L405 videos pushed me over the edge to get one. Head said I was mad but my heart said I wouldn't be happy with anything else. 2 months in to owning mine which has a very similar spec to yours (I have massage seats but no pano roof), and I agree, best car I have ever owned. Have you done anything with the infotainment? Would love carplay or something a bit more slick.

I have the same year Range Rover but 3.0 litre Diesel Autobiography, I use here in New Zealand. I agree it is the best car I have ever had and I was in the UK motor trade for 40 years. owning many different cars over the years. My hobbie car is 87 Jaguar XJSC V12 done 120000km, love it

I've always believed good maintenance is the key to keeping a car healthy and reliable. People can't be arsed to wash their cars properly and moan about rust.

Yep I wash my car all the time and it's amazing what you can come across, paint chips, tyre kerb damage, just the little things that can lead into larger things. My mate came round with his Range Rover and we went out for a drive, I could hear a wheel bearing so got home jacked up his car and found front wheel bearing and worse a split inner tyre down to the wire. He got it sorted straight away and said thank god I spotted it. Those are the sort of things when you wash your own car you can spot.

@@andrewphillips2349 That's why drivers in the military have to wash their own vehicles, be it a land rover or a main battle tank, you get to spot future problems and can fix them before it becomes a pain in the arse. Out of the two I drove the tank but have seen the blanket stackers washing lesser things ;)

We had this conversation about selling my Autobiography and swapping it, some months ago. I still have it as, like you, when scrolling through pages of cars online, I can’t figure bud anything that is better!! Like you, I’ve looked at A8, S8, Spurs etc etc and nothing compares!! I usually get bored and want to try something new but after owning an L405, you have nowhere else to go! Even a newer one is a hard purchase as it’s hard to justify the money for basically the same car! Ah well - 1st world problems 👍🏼😂

This is what first drew me to your channel a couple of years ago. Just about every other KZreadr were trashing Range Rovers. You give hard facts and not opinions from those who haven't owned one. Yes, they could be more reliable, but an interview with the CEO not too long ago indicated that reliability is something they're really striving toward right now. I bought a slightly used Classic in the 1990's and then, after it was 13 years old, got a P38 and have had it for 20 years. Divide the total cost by 20 years and it's not too bad. Still running great!

Fantastic Vlog. I'm like your self regarding Land rover products, never had a problem. I personally found that most people that slag them off, have never owned one. Its usually a mate of there's had one and nothing but trouble, or, a guy down the pub has had nothing but trouble pmsl.

I agree, I've had range rovers for 40 years now, the last 4 being brand new. All have been properly maintained and all have stood the test of time without any major problems. I've always loved them.

the evoque is a piece of shit it has nothing to do with the vogue.

If you can afford to get it and maintain it, Go for it. My ancestors said.

Like I said in a previous post, our 200k LR Discovery 2 TD5 is driving spot on and over it's life has had very little spent on it. Of course I totally get that it's old tech but it's still a comfortable ride. Overdrive kicks in at 53mph so just set the cruise control and sit back. It always gets us there. Unlike your Range Rover the TD5's suspension has never failed, the turbo is still original, road tax is around £300, fuel consumption is 30 on a run. We paid £6,000 for it 15 years ago and got 90k miles out of the first set of tyres. I think it's the cheapest car I have ever owned and I am not going to change it for one like yours.

Interesting video thanks. I think many of these cars are run on a shoestring as they get older which causes reliability issues. By the time they are with the third owner they have an expensive list of things to fix. You've obviously been fastidious in maintaining this one, which has paid off in terms of reliability and driving pleasure. Worth every penny - and that warranty seems a canny move too!

I can't agree more. I have L320 and the only other car I might consider is L405.. there is just nothing better all around than range rovers

Want to drive one of these drawing rooms on wheels……….one word…….Warranty!

I'm guessing it was Xenon bulb and they're really expensive, even on my previous car (an Audi A4) it cost £105 but on the plus side they last a lot longer than normal bulbs, around 4 to 5 yrs and are much brighter.

Nobody knows the cost of such a bulb. I suspect it is no more than $1

I'm a very low mileage driver, I bought a Chevrolet Cruze station wagon when Chevrolet exited the UK market and the car was £7999 down from about £17k with the paint it had. I've only done about 14k miles over about 8 years. I've just had minor servicing and mot costs. Nothing has gone wrong and I'm still on the same battery and tyres. It's probably cost me about £2k a year in total I guess including insurance and vehicle excise duty and the cost of the car shared out over the 8 years. I can get about 50mpg on a long run and about 30mpg for around town driving with I guess 35mpg average. So I've probably spent about £2.5k in fuel. I purposely choose a simple car with a simple non turbo petrol engine and manual gearbox because I'm a low mileage driver so wanted a car that would age well. It's got air conditioning and a great stereo and loads of carrying capacity. Despite the Chevrolet name its more a Astra Sports tourer but made by the GM Korea factory (used to be Daewoo factory). I'm probably the other extreme of running costs. Still find the latest cars very interesting but happy with my car. I'm more into bicycles to be honest. I've had cars that were problematic though, I had an early Seat Ibiza before VW bought the company and a VW Golf with some issues. A Vauxhall Vectra with electrical gremlins. I also had a Ford Mondeo which was bought for peanuts but lasted many years and a Toyota Avensis. I've also had 3 different BL Mini's and those were problematic but always very cheap to repair. Something about the old mini's I really love. I think I just resent spending money on cars nowadays. There are always more interesting ways to spend my money for me.

Fair enough. I quite liked the Cruze when they were launched. I'm around cars all day long, most of which break so I just try and drive whatever I like and suffer the running costs.

Great insight in to owning and running a Range Rover,it has always been my dream car since I was at school.I’ve owned Mercs,BMW and Audi’s but a RR has always been out of my reach.But after watching your video a dream may become a reality,,,

Including value depreciation its over 20k for 18 months... that doesn't scare you one bit? Its similar cost to leasing at this point... so why bother

Excellent video and I absolutely love the Range Rover. I'd very happily have a V8 petrol model again. Your video confirms again that a £100k car simply costs money to service and maintain it correctly, regardless of age. These cars shouldn't be bought by somebody who can't afford to run one properly. In contrast, my (now ancient) 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe V6 (purchase price new was £17.8k) has cost me about £17k including fuel over the 19 years of ownership. My Santa Fe is still going strong now and has never failed an MOT yet.

What about the depreciation Matt (apologies if this has been asked already in the comments)? I imagine this will make the cost per mile a little higher… Still love the L405 though and great video as always.

I believe that the biggest depreciation comes after they come out of warranty after 4 years. After that, it depreciates at a steady pace, but not at a crazy rate.

An honest"warts and all" video, so nice one. If you want a luxury car you have to pay luxury prices, it's really not that complicated. I saw an '07 Range Rover in Leeds city centre last week, painted matt black (clearly a home brew job), the 'dude' had the driver window down with the elbow out (of course he did, no chance the air con would be working) thinking he looked cool. I'm a reserved chap but found myself shouting "sh*t paint job mate" as he drove by. He looked hurt and disappointed. The moral is clear, don't cheap out on a luxury car. It doesn't work. People will call your car sh*t. Harsh but true. Here ends the lesson.🙏

2:16 Clever main beam .... I absolutely HATE it. My car has it and, it seems, do most other cars on the road. I have to turn it off and I wish others would as well. The dipping is not quick enough and anyway, I prefer to do it myself.

That was a great sales pitch - I feel I should buy one now and I can't even afford one. Range Rover should employ you 👍👍
