The cost of campsite metered electricity in winter. Good value or not?

In this vlog we retreat to a campsite as the temperatures drop to -9! We're on metered electricity so its a good chance for us to work out how much it costs us to stay warm and compare this to our other energy costs. See how we get on.

Given these temperatures in the U.K., I’m not surprised so many thousands of van folk flock to the south of Spain etc.

Yes, more comfortable and probably more cost effective to be in south Spain. If you go for 3 months you can offset the cost of diesel and ferry’s etc. Thanks for watching 👀 Andrew, Jane & Buddy 🐶

Hi,the amps on mains would roughly 20times less than on 12v. So you would only be using 0.125 of an amp. Roughly this is not including transformer losses and I’m calling it 240v instead of 230v. Would be closer to 0.14amps still a bit rough. Enjoy your vlogs 👍

I think you would of saved a little more by not turning the heating off, and just turning it down a little. As when you turned it on in the morning, it had to heat a cold van when would of used a lot more electric..... Just a thought, motorhomes/caravans are not as insulated as houses. Although they do put a stamp on some calling them "grade 3" all year round. Great vlog 👍🏻

Good suggestion, we’ve sort of dabbled with this but as the heating is under the bed we get a bit too stuffy, a bit of a design flaw of this layout. Probably worth another experiment to see if it saves, and Jane would have to ditch the winceyette nighty 😂😂 Thanks for watching 👀 👍 Andrew, Jane & Buddy 🐶

Only ever used metered ehu in the Netherlands and also like you thought it was fair as the site was cheap enough to start with, we have a 1996 motorhome with a monocoque body which is brilliant at staying dry and warm, but the transit cab is a different thing all together, drafty and cold so we too hang a blanket up and it makes a massive difference, we've done the swiss Alps in the winter etc and it's been fine, like you we like condensation on the screen if anywhere and just hoover it off (don't use covers), but to be fair we don't seem to get much often, wonder if it's all the cab drafts, also once up in the morning and cups of drink etc and some build up of heat, when we get out to explore we open the door for a little while to actually let the cold air in so it's the same temperature as outside, that seems to keep and condensation at bay, anyway another enjoyable vlog keep them coming 👍 .

The cabs are the worst bit, there are big vents under the seats in the Peugeot/Fiat chassis ( should have mentioned in the vlog 🤣) we also ventilate in the morning like you. Thanks for watching 👀 Andrew, Jane & Buddy 🐶

You really must get a Diesel heater fitted . I could not live without mine . The Chinese ones are as cheap as chips. Super warm and No Condensation !

Hi Robert, you’re probably right, but this motorhome malarkey is just spend, spend, spend….💰💰💰💰 Interesting that there is no condensation? How does that work??? Maybe when Andrew reaches his goal of “KZread Gazillionaire” we’ll sort it. Thanks for watching, 👀 and for the no condensation quandary 🤔 Andrew, Jane & Buddy 🐶

Because the combustion chamber exhausts to outside the van . Only the hot air is blown inside. Every UK Ambulance has an Epersbacher fitted, but there are now much cheaper Chinese ones, (Very Good Quality). You will still need to plug in for your fridge and charging . Why not just go to Morocco for the winter as I and hundreds of Brits do ?@@Eurosully

@@robertcroft8241 am still confused, the combustion chamber on the blown air exhausts outside too, the condensation is caused by our breath?? Andrew was a Paramedic until 2007, remember them well. We really fancy Morocco 🇲🇦 but need to do more research on insurance (don’t fancy just having 3rd party) and research on taking Buddy 🐶 but also like to be with family at Christmas 🎅

Your Insurance Co will give you a Green Card for up to six months in Morocco. If you are worried about breakdown cover use ADAC . (Mechanics in Morocco are wizards ) Once my Automatic Trans packed up down in the desert at Zagora. Within 2 days the new parts and fluid arrived on the bus and the trans re-built. (All in the campsite). If Buddy is a dog or cat it will be ignored . Al the French and Germans bring them The moroccans don't mess with Tourists. You are their 3RD source of income. . all that money for a van and they leave them with a waterfall on window every morning lol.... solution is route hot external air to it using a diesel heater just as your cab heater does while driving.... and for the record a diesel heater costs about £2.50 a 24 hour day to keep van at 25c.... by my reckoning it d pay for itself in 30 days but hey ho the alternative is the spend spend spend false economy you re doing at £5 a day land cold every morning lol ps. if you re doing lithium and solar make sure you use a window opener to achieve tilting panels which will give you half the rated panel output facing a low uk winter sun and in the summer can be used to tilt a little to keep them cooler as heat kills out put quite dramatically.... 2x 100 w tilted give 35ah in 5 hours of uk winter sun. flat give you next to nothing.
