I heard it on a compilation of sea shanties and have since listened to as many versions of it as I can find. Something about this version is just perfect.

The skipper promised the cabin boy his daughter, thinking he would fail. Then when the cabin boy succeeds, the skipper cruelly betrays the cabin boy and leaves him for dead in the water. The crew, none the wiser of why the cabin boy jumped ship, mourn his loss whilst the skipper remains unpunished. The skipper is the true enemy, not the Turks.
