The Corpus Clock & Chronophage - Hi-Res

Ғылым және технология

The Corpus Clock has been invented and designed by Dr John Taylor for Corpus Christi College Cambridge for the exterior of the college's new library building.
It was unveiled on 19 September 2008 by Prof Stephen Hawking, cosmologist and author of the global bestseller, A Brief History of Time.
The £1 million timepiece, known as The Corpus Clock, has been commissioned and designed to honour the John Harrison, who was famously the pioneer of Longitude and inventor of the esoteric clock mechanism known as a grasshopper escapement.
The clock has been designed by the inventor and horologist Dr John Taylor and makes ingenious use of the grasshopper escapement, moving it from the inside of the clock to the outside and refashioning it as a Chronophage, or time-eater, which literally devours time.

There is something at once soothing and hypnotic about a precision mechanical device. I could stare at this for hours. I would love to have a scaled-down version for my home.

Incredibly clever - every single function (seemingly random blinking, occasional slow seconds etc) is a product of the mechanical machinery of the clock - there are no separate devices, it's one mechanism. Also symbolically intelligent as a piece of art.

This clock is actually giving me the chills....I know it's just a clock by just the combination of the noise and the evil-looking grasshopper "eating" away time, is somewhat terrifying

I will be glad to watch (from KZread) as this masterpiece of natural science, engineering, and fine art is unveiled at the University of Cambridge. During the days of the guilds, before an aspiring Master may join a guild, he would have to create an exceptionally well-crafted piece. If the craftsmen of the old would see Corpus Chronophage, it will make the hair on the back of their necks curl.

Beautiful! A lovely fusion of traditional clockwork with the led lights as opposed to "display". Strange the way the clock behaves whenever striking the hour - it appears to dance to and fro.

When the clock struck the hour, it did it's chiming sequence, moving the lights back and forth. But after that, the seconds continue with 1. Shouldn't it compensate for the chiming? Aren't they losing seconds?

September 19 , day of the inauguration, both the announcement that the Hadron collider failed and the World market? "Put" options banned. But can a "plane" fly though a building without slowing down? Will Taylor quote Einstein? Taylor here conflates subjective and objective time. /oqEpuTGc98s

This clock has kind of a cheap look to it. I love clocks, but something about the design lacks the class one would expect when thinking about 1 million. It looks cool when it is dark, but then the grasshopper looks like it doesn't belong there at all. And the blue light shouldn't be seen from behind the clock.
