"N'er-do-well" 15:27 Awesome word. One of my favorite! Ha! Great story and narration! This one is really well-written! So many of these old stories blow their modern-day contemporaries out of the water. This story flows and is very interesting. I really like the plot. Tha k you for introducing me to another fantastic author!

The Corpse Light feels reminiscent of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and would make for a fantastic horror movie flick if it remained faithful to both the story, setting, and time-period of the source material.

Wondering if someone could help me out? It's not a novel, it's a short ghost story that I listened to quite some time ago, but cannot for the life of me remember the title or author. Nor can I find traces of the story literally anywhere I search. It's driving me mad because I really want to read it. I do remember what it's about though! Two young boys (cousins I think) that live some miles apart decide to walk and meet up with each other half way from their homes. After they meet each other they decide to play around in the nearby graveyard for fun. Long story short they end up spotting an eerie light (or candle flame, can't quite recall) that floats into the little church (or crypt) by itself with nobody holding it. One of the boys decides to follow it in because he claimed that the face of the one who is to die will appear within the flame, and he wanted to see who it was 👀 ....I'm not going to spoil the ending incase someone else is curious and wants to find & read for themselves. But if anyone knows which story I'm talking about, please let me know. It's driving me crazy, lol. Thanks :)

So Am I correct in surmising that in the context of the story "Skittles and Beer " translates as" a life of indulgence spent in the pub " which would imply that Silas was a lout and a wastrel which would be just the sort of person of whom the rector would disapprove ?

Highwayman. Locals avoid the mill road. Locals advise those they like to avoid the road and seek an alternate route. I swear I've heard a version of this where it's a highway robbery place and Royce was living in the mill and making money being a scary dead guy who waylaid unlucky travellers on the high road. The way itvwas all undone was by a sceptic not buying the ghost angle, things like the clammy wet face thing being a slack rope not pulled taught etc. That of I've just given away an idea. Ho hum.
