nah, trying too hard to push an already obvious message can be cringe and corny. Logic does that a lot. Even being unrealistic which his forced suicidal “hotline number” song had all the above. imo where he even yelled “who can relate” just really turned off most people who really dealt with suicidal tendencies. Logic even admits of never really experiencing any real issues or being in that mind set he just really wanted to see what he could do if he actually tried to play hero & save people lives hearing that some of his fans told him that his music saved them before when he wasn’t trying which seem to go over his head in thats how it’s suppose to work & most artist who are told that don’t let it get to their heads the why logic did which was obvious to a lot of people as well. there is a lot of different rappers out there who aren’t corny cause they don’t have show that “try hard” mentality in their music constantly like Hopsin, Logic & some of the ones on this list do.

I feel like you are considered corny if 1. You aren’t hood/hard/intimidating 2. Aren’t riding popularity waves ( juice world, uzi, yachty) 3. Don’t have the Kendrick personality if I’m gonna say whatever tf I want and Idgaf if this album flops or goes platinum.

Hopsin and J Cole are far from corny. Every rapper has a few corny bars here and there.

This was a much needed video after how brutally elementary all of chances bars were in big day. That dude came out with the corniest album.

It’s just kind of repulsive when someone tries so hard to prove something to you. People are gonna think of logic as someone who really wants everyone to think he’s a black rapper that made it out of the struggle like much of the greats before him and that he knows how it feels. The dude has great talent and a message but people are gonna remember him for repeatedly pushing that narrative when he didn’t need to to find success

I feel like rappers are labeled corny if they are lyrical but aren't trying to be pretentious "woke" artist.

Hopsin is corny because of him dissing rappers in almost every song for attention and always comparing himself to his peers. Logic is considered corny because he doesn’t really have an diverse style in his music and a lot of people seem to look at him like a fast rapper that hops on new waves to the point where it gets boring.

When I hear an artist spit bars, I lower the standard of how "vibey" should be for me to enjoy it, because I appreciate the work they put into their craft. Rap critics are nowhere near the reason that mumble rap became popular. Most mumble rappers couldn't rap "lyrically" in the first place, and don't plan to, and since there are nearly no "lyrical" bars in the first place, it's not like those artists created mumble rap because their "lyrical" rap was criticized. Most of those rappers just want to make money and be rich and famous. It's that simple.

Vic Mensa ruined his career by being too corny. Holding just needed to take those damn contacts out, lol.

Everything about music is subjective, but that doesn't make it useless. If a rapper has been labeled corny, then it must mean MANY people are of that opinion. Now, I'm not saying many people thinking the same thing automatically makes it so, but it does legitimize that opinion to a certain extent.

"Corny" is a false terminology, and one I find myself slipping into often due to people understanding what I mean by it. Truly, I think when most people use the term, they're referring to somebody who either blatantly opposes popular new movements in rap music in a seemingly vindictive way to lash out (think of Eminem's Kamikaze album or Ill Mind of Hopsin IV), somebody who's entire appeal is based around technicality in lyricism and flows (look at Logic, Eminem, or J Cole), or somebody just cashing in on a trend or image (Macklemore, Drake, Chance). A disclaimer, I don't think all of these artists are corny, just giving popular examples.

I say “corny” meaning “preachy” Hopsins corny cos he’s constantly preachy and acts like he’s better than everyone. Same with Russ.

People rarely use corny in the sense of "sentimental to the point of not being genuine" people use corny when something causes them to cringe, there is sometimes overlap but most the time it's the cringe part like hopsin isn't considered cringe for him being mawkishly sentiment but for being "preachy" and it reflects more on the rebellious punk side of rap as young bucks don't want to listen to artists that have messages similar to their parents or teachers. That's why they like dumb shit about drugs and bitches.

Logic just lost on the genetics lottery, if he can came out as physically black instead of white, he wouldn't be so corny. If Logic looked black, he would not be reminding everyone that he is biracial every 10 seconds.

@Enzi Gee for sure but I know people who think kdots mad corny and he is about as authentic as they come. And while I think Hop can come off corny sometimes he found an audience and success. I think if you're authentic your audience will find you. Trying to come off cool to everybody will be problematic because people are fickle and the standard is always changing.

The biggest Corny category in Hiphop music stems from being too lyrical - focusing on world play more than other musical elements of a song. Think (Logic, Eminem at times, Joyner, Tyler the Creator, Hopsin & his contact lenses, lesser known rappers like token, tech 9ne, Royce da 5’9) drake can be excused as he is more a pop star than a rap star now his palette is too wide to simply call him a raper.

Tyler is known for being musical.

The only thing I think is corny is not rapping clearly or straight up mumbling. The fact that "mumble rap" is even a thing is beyond corny it's disgusting. People would say Hopsin is corny, because he raps differently and is unique in his own way and then go on to say that a rapper rapping the same as everyone else is dope. Fuck that. Generic = Corny.

I used to love hopsin, but as I've got older I've realised how corny he really is. The raw album is painful to listen to nowadays

Of course I dont relate to any of those you mentioned either but I cannot be denial for all the storytelling and for the overall project he managed to come up with. Everybody is entitled to have their opinions and I respect yours but if you can give mmlp a listen you'll see those points you just made were only 5% of the album.

It's always baffled me that a man with bare-minimum talent (like Drake), can have their success catapulted into the stratosphere, but when a woman like Noname or Rapsody can out-rap 90 percent of the dudes in the game today, they are slept on
