Write the note neatly 2. write the note neat in the first example "neatly" is working as an adverb that how the note should be written. But I was wondering in the second example the adjective "neat" is used as an object complement that to state what the object "the note" has to become. but on the other hand, The second example sounds strange. Nice 👌 thanks 😊 What about figures of speech, other than sarcasm, do they flout the maxims? Hyperbole, metaphor, personification...

  • @evanashworth490

    @evanashworth490

    Жыл бұрын

    This is a great question, and my feeling is that other figures of speech can but don't always flout a maxim. However, for example, if the speaker piles on too many metaphors, the meaning could be easily lost on the addressee, so that might constitute a flouting (or probably a violation) of the maxim of manner (namely, the speaker is not "clear"). I hope that helps!

    This is actually a complicated question to answer. I had to look up what "zaddy" means, but if you mean to call me an attractive, older man (thanks!), then, I guess it's not entirely irrelevant because I just take it as a general compliment about the video. However, if you mean something else by "zaddy" (e.g., the sound a Cadillac makes when idling too low), then, yes, it would be a violation of the maxim of relation.

    La intencionalidad es definida en la tradición psicologista como una propiedad de la mente (o conciencia) que consiste en que sus estados (los estados de conciencia o mentales) están dirigidos hacia algo, se relacionen o traten acerca de algo, que es su contenido u objeto intencional. Pero este objeto intencional es algo exclusivamente mental, retengamos esto. El lenguaje se encarga de expresar solo ese contenido mental y no una realidad del mundo externa a la mente, con su valor de verdad o falsedad. Siempre que pienso, pienso algo. No es posible pensamiento sin contenido. Pero ¿cómo se relaciona este psicologismo con la filosofía del lenguaje de Grice? ¿Cómo se establece la relación significado-mente? Pues bien, de modo tradicional, el estudio de la mente y de los conceptos o contenidos mentales se ha basado en el estudio de su expresión en el lenguaje, en el análisis de cómo el lenguaje expresa los contenidos mentales: cómo decimos las cosas que pensamos, de qué modo las expresamos. En este sentido, para Grice existen dos elementos del lenguaje que cumplen el rol de ejes referenciales: 1) las oraciones de actitud proposicional y 2) los nombres comunes (o términos generales).

    Sure! Consider the example below in which speaker A is a teacher and speaker B is a 3rd grader: A: Do you have any questions about multiplication tables? B: Does 8 times 8 = 36? A: I cannot divulge the answer but you should eschew obfuscation by consulting your textbook. In the third line, speaker A isn't necessarily speaking too much (violating maxim of quantity), but they are definitely violating the maxim of manner by using unnecessarily complex language with a child, which creates confusion.
