The Convoluted History of Tomorrowland

Ойын-сауық

Okay, I say brief. I made it as brief as I could. Tomorrowland has been trouble ever since it opened in 1955. Today, we go back in time to trace what made the land what it is today, and the different rides that made an impact (positive or negative) on Disney's most out of date futuristic land.

Demo teams are great but everybody makes mistakes. While it's down, they're doing some nice little updates to the system and taking care of it; because why not? When I was a kid my two favorite rides were Space Mountain and the Tommorow Land Speedway. My reasons being me thinking Space Mountain was a really hardcore rollercoaster and the space theme (also the dioramas that were in the exit). For Tomorrow Land Speedway it was solely because I was able to take part in my life long passion that's cars by being able to drive a "car", even though it's just a glorified lawn mower due to the "cars" having 9hp Briggs & Stratton engines.

But I can see it being reestablished nurturing the betterment of the entire land - though there is a lot of charming characteristics within Tomorrowland. And, remember, that the original Peoplemover went INSIDE Star Tours, around Autopia and the now Finding Nemo Submarine - there were even moments when it went RIGHT BESIDE (like, almost too close for comfort) the Monorail - so if you were fortunate enough, your Peoplemover car and the Monorail would have been SIDE BY SIDE!

They likely wouldn't make a true copy of the people mover just not cost effective to simply make a 1:1 copy of the original ride. I think they should try to make something new. Rebuild the track and create a slow ride but make it modern and perhaps appear fast. Add more video screens and similar to make it immersive. I believe that a new transportation ride should bring back the idea of a Tommorow land and Disney actually has a perfect one. From the Movie Tommorowland. kzread.info/dash/bejne/l4uArJOhgpCzm5c.html The Levitating Elevated Vehicle. It can show case Progress City or future city. As of now we currently have many of the near future tech already in development or concept and anything knew can be added for the ride experience and hell in a few short years will have space ships heading to mars. Although a ride through the solar system sounds cool, it begins to fall victim to Tomorrowland syndrome, only worse this time. In Walt's time, it was just the concept of space travel that became familiar. In coming years, SpaceX, Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic, and others are looking to make space tourism more accessible. Though it probably won't become cheap enough for the price of a Disneyland vacation in this decade, I'm afraid a Disney ride more closely focused on space travel will feel kind of like the poor man's space tourism. I still like space mountain though. But the idea of a adventure though inner space-esque ride sounds awesome.

  • @addyhowell4897

    Sweet68Camaro I am not Native American so I could be wrong, but I personally believe making light of someone else’s culture is typically a racist activity. Especially considering the US’s history in dealing with the Natives, from making unfair trades and forcing them off their land to taking their children and forcing them to assimilate to European/US culture, causing them to lose many of their own cultural practices in the process. It may have not been perceived as racist or wrong while you were growing up, but times have changed. The history we’ve been taught was generally written from the perspective of white men. So, we now need to reconsider things we’ve done and think about how it affects the people we are referencing. As I said, I am not Native American, nor am I a part of any other racial minority group, so I am not the leading expert on what is offensive in any regard. However, people that are a part of those marginalized groups have previously stated that things like dressing up and playing “Cowboys and Indians” is not ideal.

    Addy Howell If you want to live in a world where you have to walk on eggshells and be afraid of hurting someone’s feeling, go for it. I for one won’t. I will live my life like a normal person. If I offend someone, I apologize. Besides... In Peter Pan, the lost boys were not making light of the Indian’s culture. They were participating in a war dance. Nuff said..

  • @addyhowell4897

    @addyhowell4897

    3 жыл бұрын

    Sweet68Camaro Are you not usually worried about hurting someone’s feelings? If I have to change a few minuscule things about how I live my life so that people that are less privileged than me can be more comfortable, I’m going to make those changes. I guess I came into this comment section with the naive assumption that people are inherently kind and think about how their actions affect others. You know what? That’s my bad. That’s on me for trying to see the best in people when it just isn’t there. I’m sorry you don’t have the pleasure of being able to empathize with people that are different than you, and I’m sorry you think caring about others is too sensitive or weak. You’re half-baked “apology” means nothing if you continue to do what you’re apologizing for in the first place. In a perfect world, Peter Pan wouldn’t be racist and we wouldn’t have to worry about offending other cultures. We don’t live in a perfect world. People are affected by the way in which their lifestyles are portrayed in the media every day. You say the Lost Boys are just participating in a war dance and that there is nothing wrong with that. And you’re right; there would be nothing wrong with an accurate depiction of a Native American ritual. I unfortunately do not know much about Native rituals and dances, so I won’t even comment on that part. I will, however, say that if the animators and artists for Peter Pan did not have some sort of bias or outright false and degrading stereotype against natives, even without actively trying to be offensive or mean, they would not have depicted the Native Americans as the actual color red and refer to themselves AS red in the timeless song, “What Makes the Red Man Red”.

    I was absolutely fascinated by Tomorrowland at WDW when I was a kid. It was twelve years old when I saw it, but it was little changed from the 1970’s version. The architecture was beautiful and really captured my imagination; it was like going to a city in the sky. My sister and I spent hours there riding and re-riding If You Had Wings, Mission to Mars, and the WEDWay PeopleMover; eating at the Tomorrowland Terrace; and soaking up the atmosphere. Just seeing a picture of those iconic entryway pylon fountains makes my chest a little tight.

    Hey, you will put respect on the Timekeeper's name! Always enjoyed that one, was always fun to visit. I was pretty struck in my only visit to Disneyland how rough a shape its Tomorrowland is currently in; we East coasters think ours has it bad, but it's at least in a better spot than that. Still, Florida's Tomorrowland definitely needs some care; the dream many have long held has been to connect the two attraction buildings on either side of the land's entrance with a dark ride that moves between the two in some fashion, but how feasible that actually is, I have no idea. In the meantime...the Speedway either needs serious re-doing or has to go. It's been chopped down so much already over the years, and it's just not a great experience anymore. For Disneyland's, I always love how kinetic the '67 update looked, especially once they had the monorail, PeopleMover, submarines, everything just clicking and looking like a vision of transportation of the future. It could still give that feeling again, but obviously there's plenty of work to be done to get near that.

I remember that we didn't get to return to Disneyland for nearly a decade and when we made it back in the 1990s I actually cried because "Adventure Thru Inner Space" was gone. People need to be bombarded with things that are positive and gets them to think. Space, New Technology, Flight, art. Politics, . They need to be encouraged to like it. not pass it off as a fleeting or only to the rich or influential. It needs to be seen for everyone. Space X is a shining example of that. Hey! I found your site and really enjoy your videos. You are a very good narrator, well spoken and intelligent. I'm a 65 yr old and only saw Disney back in the 70's. I was stationed in California and Florida so we had access to military passes which i believe was the first "All Day Pass" were we did not have to use "lettered Tickets" and could ride any ride however many times we wanted. Not sure though, what do you think? When did they start the unlimited ride option. I also remember going to the worlds fair in Queens. Saw a lot of rides that popped up in Both Disney lands. So, its been fun seeing the progression of DL since my last visit was back in 1975. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

    I think the more fictional future works a lot better and fits better with the other lands. Sci-fi is always based in a bit of reality, but I think leaning towards the fictional elements makes it a bit more timeless. Also the retro vintage future word you were looking for is futurism, it was an art movement that started in Italy in the early 20th century and is honestly one of my favorite things to look into, so cool!
