It still baffles me how Scott could even think that compressing a 25+ year military/political career into a 2 1/2 hour theatrical release can be a good idea. Aren’t directors already aware that more doesn’t mean better when you don’t give the audience the time to really experience and connect with what they see on the screen??? Isn’t that like directing 101? Scott ruined this movie the moment he decided he wanted to do the entirety of the Napoleonic Era. Before production started, the movie was originally planned to just cover the rise of Napoleon, from the Siege of Toulon (1793) to his Coronation (1804). It was originally titled “Kitbag” and it was to focus on Napoleon’s rise through the military and have a side-plot of his relationship with Josephine. Think of it, had he stuck to the original plan, he could’ve gave us a proper depiction of Napoleon as a military commander, his political ambition, with the initial toxicity and settling of his marriage with Josephine. Then the movie could cinematically end with Napoleon crowning himself Emperor to complete his rise from a Corsican Lieutenant in the French Artillery. But no, Scott didn’t care. He only wanted to slap onto his bucket list that he has made an “epic” on Napoleon. A rushed, soulless, biased, condescending depiction of the greatest military mind in human history.

You completely missed the point. You're looking at it as the portrayyal of the amazing military genius.Ridley has said several times he was fascinated by a man who had the megalomania vision of a conqueror, who was well-known to be constantly thinking of his relationship with his wife. That's what drew him to the movie.if you want a visual depiction of Napoleons strategic and tactical brilliance, watch the 2002 version. It's not long ago. Like all people with an internal locus of control, Scott is motivated by exploring his own interests within the subject matter and doesn't care about others opinions of his work, either.That's the secret to success, with somebody with his personality type

Ridley Scott, the guy who managed to make a Robin-hood that was worse than ‘Prince of Thieves’, felt he was the man to improve on a project Kubrick chose to abandon. Ridley Scott has some questionable judgement

Kubrick did not simply "abandon" it. He was forced to. Also, Scott's film is utterly unrelated to Kubrick's (and now Spielberg's) version.

The thing about Bonaparte is his high intelligence and energy. It was never enough for an actor just to look like him.

The 1970 "Waterloo" is unbeatable. The characters are perfecrly cast, especially the chief protagonists, the historical accuracy is first rate, and the Russian soldiers employed as British and French Napleonic soldiers trained to perfection, Dropping 30 years from Josephine's age to make her look hotter is utter nonsense. When portraying historical events, accuracy, even allowing for some artistic interpretation and time compression, is essential. Ridley Scott failed!

Jack Nickolson Napoleon would be insane. Kubrick is probably right with the casting. Napoleon is usually played by an actor that is a bit "soft" and is cast mostly based on his looks, like Phoenix is. Rod Stiger as Napoleon was great on the other hand.

Even Josephine sucks in this film, he portrayed her as a whore

I saw the movie today and was very unimpressed. It has a ton of inaccuracies but the worst offense is we never get any attempt to understand Napoleon's motivations. We see Scott's interpretation of a historical even then Napoleon pining over Josephine then another historical event and no context at all. It doesn't help many of the facts are wrong (did you know Napoleon returned to France because he thought Josephine was sleeping with Tsar Alexander and abandoned his troops in Egypt only because she was having an affair?). That said, he did a great job in spurts. I'd love to see his take on any of the periods shown from Napoleon's rise after Toulon, to taking the Emperor title before Austerlitz, and the 100 Days before Waterloo. It makes me wonder if the 4 hour movie will be better. The nice thing is on AppleTV we will be able to fast forward through the boring/inaccurate parts.

the movie basically said Napoleon was addicted to Josephine. not true. Napoleon developed feelings after he married her. he wanted to elevate his status within French nobility so marrying her was a no brainer.

"Napoleon, The Cuck" the latest british production about N. Bonapartes life.

I got a terrible vibe from this movie since the first trailer. Phoenix’s performance seemed so stiff and unnatural, borderline “phoned-in”. Now it makes sense, he probably never fully sank his teeth into what makes this character tick

The duelist was way better in the depiction of Napoleonic era. This Napoleon looks more a History Alien Channel docu-fiction. Welp, let me get a life.

Anyway, I don't take that personally and I get that he was targeting our press, French historians have actually more mixed thoughts about the movie, Arthur Chevalier loved it for example and even Gueniffey cited on this video became less close minded in a recent interview.

I wouldn’t say miscasted. Misdirected is much better to describe what happened here. The fact that Scott compromised to make the role “comfortable” for Phoenix explains a lot. Every failing in this project has Scott’s name all over it and yet he’ll respond to the criticism like some 13 year old kid on a Call of Duty Xbox 360 server.

I saw this movie and I WANT MY MONEY BACK. My theory is Apple is inexperienced in Major Film making. Ridley Scott, Phoenix and everyone involved took the money and ran... Laughing at Apple all the way to the bank.

I LOVED the halation tutorial. That was a great demonstration. Also, I can't tell you how much I enjoy these videos. So intriguing to see these details behind the scenes. Really enjoyable and fascinating video.

i really love how the french are holding a dutch flag (horizontal red white and blue) instead of the french flag (vertical red white and blue).

I have nothing against Joaquin Phoenix, but he is miscast. There also seem to be historical errors. It's a shame about the great topic.

For all those looking to say I have the wrong flag in the thumbnail... yes! That's the point. It was made by Ridley Scott a British Filmmaker who has been having a war of words with French critics!

The current trend to deemphasize/demean the use of CGI in movies almost feels like a rehash of the Oscars' claim that the CGI in the original Tron was "cheating" back in 1982...The only thing is that it seems more like cheating to use CGI and pretend you didn't than to acknowledge the skillful contributions of CGI artists and engineers to your films, but that's just my take ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’ve seen Holdfast servers do a better job at depicting Napoleonic tactics than how Scott did here. He basically had everyone run around like Hollywood Medieval armies… with muskets…

We have Barry Lyndon, so it all came together in the end.

His masterly battle tactics were, like Alexander the Great, what set him apart from other commanders. It wasn’t even attempted to show this in the movie ( as it wasn’t in the Colin Farrell Alexander the Great movie either)

Talking of the “multi-cam” approach - to, for example, the battle scenes - Cecil B. deMille - 90 or so years ago - had some epic scene with a cast of thousands (probably mostly extras) to shoot - and two or more motion picture cameras to film the scene - the scene didn’t lend itself to more than one take because of the particular action/numbers involved - having called “cut” from his director’s chair when the scene was completed, to de Mille’s immense disappointment (to say the least), a camera operator way up in some elevated position on a distant hill, shouted back: “Ready when you are, Mr. de Mille !” 🤭

Man... that's a heartbreaking story haha

The biggest insult to me being a massive fan of the era was the battle inaccuracies. The Battle of Waterloo was so mental in how it was portrayed that none of it made any sense! "The Prussians are 12 miles away!" Okay but it never explains why the Prussians are constantly mentioned in the battle and why they are held with such high importanc. No mention of Grouchy trying to stop them. There is no mention of Lingly, or Quatre Bras. They don't even have the moment Napoleon got rushed off the field for a rest. Ney's Cavalry charge is met by the British Cavalry charge... this was stupid. The British Cavalry charge and the charge of the Scots Grey's was in response to D'Erlon's I Corps advance which broke the British line in the centre. By the time Ney did his ill fated Cavalry charge the British Cavalry had all been but shot by their charge a while earlier. Again the British march forward and form squares and not backwards behind the ridge. Napoleon charging in on horse back then riding away at the end instead of having to be dragged off the field. The whole battle was a joke and all that saved it was the cinematics. As if they thought this was legit!

Innacuracies in almost everything

Scott is amazing on set. On The Last Duel he had all of the camera operators on his walkie talkie channel and was constantly directing each one.

There are many problems with this movie starting with Joachim Phoenix who is too old for the part. Also the fact that Ridley Scott is British, his view is tinted by the GB love-hate relationship with France. Scott portrays Napoleon as a bizarre and feeble man, which is hard to believe in the light of his accomplishments (good or bad). It's like if a German director made a movie about Churchill and the Battle of Britain. Just look at this avatar, there's the "Jack" right in your face . I believe the French flag is of a different "shape" of red white and blue (LOL). Plus the movie is quite bland compared to the subject matter. Nuff said...

True, Joachim is too old but also the actress playing Josephine is too young(as Josephine was actually 6 years older than Napoleon).

Being french I have to admit that I had a stereotypical reaction here: This depiction of Napoleon as an old closed off psycho with low energy and no charisma is at the opposite of what I would have expected, but exactly how I imagine the british would have portrayed him. It is turning into a habit really; I saw "The King" (about the campagign of Henry V in France) recently and the way the characters were portrayed is ridiculously anti french and pro english.

The King is based on the Shakespeare play of course it is anti-French. And what French films are there where British imperialists are portrayed in a flattering light? Napoleon has been subject to so much hagiography (Especially by the French) it is nice to see a film that shows maybe the continental conqueror had a violent and megalomaniac side.

@@FrameVoyager The film takes place largely before Napoleon became Emperor. There are some paintings of him that show he had firm, unlined features even afterward. Phoenix is 48 but as haggard as a 60 year old.

Yeah I know a lot of other films like Top Gun did multi-cam solutions but I'm not sure I've heard of anyone doing it to this level. I've been meaning to see if this happens on other films a lot or if this truly is a new way of filmmaking taken to the extreme lol

Great video! love the BTS of the filmaking. Quick qestion for anybody in the comments that's more competent with the technical aspects. If you have 11 cameras running at once to cover all differrent angles then I'm wondering...how do you get around the problem of cameras capturing other cameras?? Do you use visual effects in post to digitally remove them out?

68 millions people have seen the movie yet ??? Look at the English and American critics, they all think the film is bad... Are you so manipulated that you think only the French find this film bad? This is completely false, the film has as many good and bad reviews in France as it does in other countries.

My problem with the movie is it is TOO CLEAN. So clean it looks fake.

As there's not been a half decent film about Napoleon since 1970 where Rod Steiger played him brilliantly, this is a must-see. Don't give a stuff whether Phoenix is 48 or not, Ridley Scott's directing is the key here !! 2000's 'Gladiator' still stands up to scrutiny, especially Joachim's deranged performance as Commodus, & it's good that Scott & he worked together again. Napoleon for me always seemed like the good guy, especially when contrasted with that overbearing ass Wellington, & won the hearts & minds of the French even when he was diminished. It's so hard to bring people like this alive & to make it riveting for the viewer but Scott generally has a damn good go; King John I (Robin Hood), Saladin & Jerusalem's "Leper King" in (Kingdom Of Heaven) to name a few. Phoenix is a very great, determined & dedicated actor but 'Joker' was so overrated; I prefer him in other stuff. His big bro, River Phoenix I am sure ,looking down would be so proud now.

Actually there is the brilliant "The Hostage of Europe" (1989) available on youtube with Roland Blanche. Incredibly historicaly accurate. And beautiful. The "Napoléon" series of 2003 with Christian Clavier is also very very good.

Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't mind a movie about Joseph Bologne and his service in the French Revolution.

Can you even begin to imagine the genius of Napoleon from the standpoint of making the Germans and the French fight together shoulder to shoulder in any scenario ????? !!!! Germans and French are like cats and dogs, no way would they work together on anything! They hate each other and nothing can make them cooperate..and yet, And yet, here's the brilliant Italian, descendant of Ancient Romans Napoleon WHO COULD! What a feat !

It's baffling how ugly this film is in terms of aesthetics. A movie covered in a flat blue grey filter, clumsy CGI masquerading as practical effects, boring battle sequences, confusing editing, a ridiculously bad performance by Joaquin, an absence of history, and worst all a terrible script. I just don't get how Ridley could fuck this up this badly. Having said that, good video!

Says he loved his work in joker, makes him play a bland boring uncharismatic man baby in his movie and gave him nothing to work with. This seemed like a hit piece against the great man narrative

The film could've been infinitely improved if they had just a) made them speak in french, and b) focused on a much shorter span of time, ie. a single battle (like in 'Waterloo') or from Toulon to his coronation. Shame.

Now I'm worried for Gladiator II.

The problem with this Napoleon film is that it's being told by a Brit. Ridley Scott likely was educated about Napoleon from a very Anglo-centric viewpoint . That's a huge problem as Napoleon is a hero in not just France but many quarters elsewhere. Finding a director or writer with a more balanced viewpoint would have been more fair.

He was a strategy genius, which I guess we see here, but he was just as importantly a legendary stateman, who would bring tons of innovations in France and abroad such as the napoleonic code of law, the centralization of France, lycée (high school), teh concordat (resolving the conflict between the church and the republican government), the central bank of France, merit based promotions in the public sector, as well as large infrastructure projects. He was also passioned in sciences (that's why he brought scientists during his conquest of egypt), to the point of, after his defeat, wanting to go to the US to start a scientific career. And here he is protrayed as a closed off psycho.

Well technically, David Scarpa wrote the screenplay after Ridley Scott got bored after a couple of biographies haha. David Scarpa is an American writer.

Alexander the great? The only thing there would be the youth angle as he was pretty young and died at 32. Maybe like a Timothée Chalamet type actor. Though I'd say that he's unlikely to play that character given the recent films he's in.

No, please. We don't need this guy trying to play any more charming dictators. And the Alexander movie isn't bad, and it certainly isn't historically inaccurate. A lot of the hate was from 00's homophobia.

Hey guys the real question about the brittish and Napoleon is WHO decrlared the wars? Who manouvered to bring a group of monarch to attack France after and after?

To take the story of Napoleon and the staggering acting ability of Joachim Phoenix and make a film that is both boring and have the viewer feel they are more interesting than Napoleon: is a Miracle. A terrible miracle but miracle nevertheless.

my god cant even imagine how aweful the script mustve been before they sat down.....or maybe it was better?

JQ is a great actor one of my favorite but I was expecting not to see him on a role of a very young Napoleon, I was expecting him to be an old version of Napoleon. I was disappointed at best.

CGI and Visual FX artists need to be acknowledged and claiming none are used when there is (Top Gun...) an abundance in use, is straight up lying and should be an illegal claim unless true.

Agreed! VFX artists never get the credit they deserve.

Typically Anglo-saxon point of view : Manichean, individual, without nuance. While the character of Napoleon is very ambivalent in reality. Like his historical role. Above all, typically Hollywood, the point of view only of the individual. Nothing on the historical context which explains its fundamental role in changing France and Europe. Only the individual makes History (like today the myth of thoses youngs people who invent in their garage Google, Windows etc., as if there was no system that favors them. US point of view and myth...)

The French would have only loved this movie if it was napoleon screaming vive la France for 20 hours while shoving snails in his mouth and screaming he was average height for the time while hundreds of thousands frenchies would scream his name and bow to him. “Greatest general” my a**. French people have only one general who won a few battles and they think they are the best people. He wasn’t even French, he was Italian.

Was looking forward to watching this film for months, saw it last night. Ridley Scott's cinematic skills are amazing, the battle scenes were fantastic!! One problem, never believed for one second, one scene or sequence that Joaquin Phoenix could possibly be Napoleon Bonaparte! Phoenix lacked intensity, charisma, and all the leadership skills Napoleon was famous for!! Very disappointed!! Although Napoleon's relationship with Josephine was a very important of who Napoleon was, the scenes between the two were incredibly boring , bland, and Dry...If you are looking for a movie which goes into detail about Napoleons rise to power as a Military and/or Political Genius, THIS IS NOT THE MOVIE FOR YOU!!

Also Jospehine was older than Napoleon. If you're making a movie about them you'd think her age would be a relevant factor, both because he was initially looking for an older wife to raise his social status, and that he was forced to abandon her because they couldn't have children. It's kind of a big part of how their relationship was, and has been, perceived.

Scott had the chance to make the greatest Napoleon film of all times and he completely missed it. What a shame.

I find that interesting, using 11 cameras, and with the ability to paint out camera men these days, why not. Still dress them as soldiers, but then if you do see them, no prob to take them out. I do wonder though, if the battles will end up being those incongruent messes where you it's just a blur of people fighting and so you ahve no emotional connection to the stakes.

I would imagine at this scale it's pretty difficult. I imagine when Napoleon is in charge we'll probably see it more from his perspective from a strategic point of view rather than like a Mel Gibson's the Patriot viewpoint.

@@FrameVoyager difficult to keep a sense of the action? Idk. Depends on how it was shot and how it's edited. I know people often talk about the Bourne films as being the start of fight scenes that are unfollowable. But I recently went back and watched them and honestly they were very clear on the stakes and moves of the fight. Good use of inserts to show key moments/moves. Even while keeping a very kinetic camera over all. I feel like people since have leaned into the kinetic camera without remembering to clearly show the progression/evolution/ups and downs of a fight. Similarly with war movies, there tends to be this vibe method of just showing the chaos and intensity of battle. But they don't follow that up by also keeping me engaged in the question of if they will win, the small victories and failures within the battle. It'd be like doing a basketball movie, but only showing random passes and dunks without ever cutting to the score board or team huddle to let me know if they are winning or losing and how high or low the stakes are through the game.

@@IanZainea1990 Difficult to show like more down in the trenches is what I mean. Like I think we will see the battles from a more tactical 30,000 foot approach versus a true ground aspect of it. I think you'll have those ground level parts, but to understand the battle I think you'll see if from the vantage point of Napoleon. If that makes sense

Not sure if they would do that, it was a very lazy film, I noticed a couple of extras with white cocktails of the restoration in the Russian campaign scene, probably just filmed the return from Elba scene which the film came across as a poor B movie. There was quite a few wtf moments in the film, I wish I hadn't wasted my money and just watched the duelist again.

The movie was very disappointing indeed

Honestly most depictions of Napoleon we have are from the British perspective. But this feels downright American! I can't can't believe any European would make a movie like this.

Imo the main reason I really disliked the movie was that it was SO MUCH about his love life. Like really man when I think of napoleon I think of big battles, amazing strategies and conquering many countries but nah man it was all about his stupid love story

It's not exactly controversial, it's just not that great. Also, Kingdom of Heaven was more realistic not less, and had a superior dramatic plot and moral depth.

I just hope the director’s cut for this has the same effect with Kingdom of Heaven. That added 45 minutes alone made a significant difference into turning a mediocre historical epic into actually a decent one. Let’s hope Scott doesn’t disappoint us with that additional hour and a half in Napoleon Director’s Cut.

well Ridley Scott it's time to give up the director's chair, please let Napoleon be the last nail in the coffin of your recent lousy filmography ...

Ridley Scott started in 1977 with a superb historical piece, "The Duelists" (based on Joseph Conrad's novel), but he's ending his career with a garbage of a movie. Bad screenplay, chockfull of historical inaccuracies, to the point of absurdity. A forgettable soundtrack, actors either too old or too young for their respective roles, and a bit of redemption when it comes to costume design. There were no real military history consultants on this project or if there were, they were locked in a hotel room. The film is also unabashedly Anglo-centric. The role of the British is showcased and the role of the others presented as rather secondary. Only a third of forces blocking Toulon were British, nor was the majority of Wellington's army at Waterloo British (even before the arrival of the Prussians). The wars of 1806 and 1809 were entirely omitted. Is it because France did not initiate them? The opportunities for excellent subplots were wasted, e.g., Napoleon in relation to Marshal (later King of Sweden) Bernadotte or Napoleon in relation to Eugène de Beauharnais.

Crap movie. Ridley blew it with the actor. Rod Steiger was a great Napoleon in "Waterloo".

Went and saw it today at the theatre! I thought this film had a nice balance between narrative, battles, and bloodshed. It wasn't Joaquin's best performance but he still did a solid job of executing his role in the right moments. I feel like if he would have added a bit more creativity or creating a unique voice for Napoleon it really would have elevated this performance. Where this movie truly shines is the incredible sets, lighting, and cinematography. Ridley Scott did a nice job of creating as I said a balance between the narrative, and when it would start to drag on a bit, throw you in the midst of an epic battle that really grabs your attention. There is plenty to enjoy with this film but it lacked a bit of spontaneity to really push it into masterpiece territory. That being said it isn't a film for everyone but if you would enjoy a film with a bit of Braveheart mixed with a tangled love story you will probably like this one.

I thought it was terrible. The battles were good, but the Josephine stuff was just boring, and the movie gave no sense of why Napoleon was a successful and charismatic leader.

The movie was a huge disappointment,they made Napoleon pussy whooped, stoic which was okay but the movie was incomplete and didn’t portray him as one of the greatest generals of all time, this man ravaged most the known world, had the pope arrested 😂, and devastated Europe
