My favorite Icon would be Cindy because of the crazy obstacles and rewrites the character been through ever since she was scrap as the icon for 2002. Furthermore, I believe that Cindy has a lot of potential, you can make her a co-host to the Caretaker if he ever gets his own year again or expand upon Cindy's fire abilities. There is so many possibilities.

He was the only icon at HHN 20 that would give me his autograph, cementing his status as my favorite.

The Director being hired by Universal, I think that’s on the company. I mean, you hire this guy who looks, sounds, and probably smells (unconfirmed) like a serial killer, barely do any background checks, and give him complete control of your brand new theme park so he can make whatever the hell he wants? Just saying, they probably should’ve seen all that murder coming.

He’s gotta be my favorite. As a child I begged my parents to bring me the first year the director showed up… It was the BEST year being in islands with his horror movie icon house. I was super freaked out of course but it’s what kept me coming for years and years after. Universal please step it up.

I have really fond memories of the smiling on the inside commercial I also begged my folks but they weren't sold on it I was very young It still plays in my head from time to time sticks with me.

Agreed! It was my first year attending… haven’t missed a year since 2003 (13), I do miss the level of immersion and creativity from the “icon” years… being honest, it’s become a booze fest with lots of dead zones and lack of crowd control over the years.

For a second I thought that Lil Boo was the center of Controversy which is funny because imagine a little pumpkin being canceled

I think the fact that the director is so grounded is what makes him so horrifying. It's why characters like Michael Myers and Leatherface are so scary. Because you could see someone like this actually existing.

What I also love about The Director is that he shares a lot of similarities with the character of Mark Lewis from the 1960 film "Peeping Tom" - both are serial killers who enjoy filming their victims in completely raw terror. Pretty awesome film and I highly recommend it if your a Director fan!

Glad to see I'm not the only person to make that connection! Apparently "Peeping Tom" was regarded as being too scary and critics hated it. I think both characters have a unique and very unsettling trait in common. They are both consumed with a really morbid sense of voyeurism. They want to capture their victims' fear and terror so they can watch it again and again. It's pretty spooky to imagine someone being like that. Brrrr....

I think the fact that he’s “just a guy with a camera” is what makes him extra terrifying. His horror is not easily explained away with him being a supernatural being or something, but instead an ordinary man with extreme passion for his art. So extreme, that he does become a monster born from the extremes of human emotion. That and universal having a creepy director as a character just fits really well

13 is the one year I was able to go to HHN in Orlando, so the Director has a special place in my heart. My mom got so scared she thought she was having a heart attack and refuses to ever go again 😅

I always saw Paulo and Julian as enemies (due to a theory I have that Paulo was the mysterious “unruly patron” responsible for Julian’s death. Loooong story as to why 😂) so I think a year featuring them would rock!

My first time at HHN was with The Director and I remember the first time I spotted him in the Terror Tram and it was being covered on the news. He has a very clever and interesting backstory! The advertisements and the actor who portrays him in them really added to the experience. I loved the ad where you see him filming guests from Citywalk. My favorite year!

The best!

Deep dive on The Caretaker please. He was always my favorite, and is still responsible for the biggest scare I ever had at HHN through the years. I forgot which year it was exactly, but you're exiting the house (like you can see the exit straight ahead, maybe 30ft), it's all dark, but you see him standing on the left lit up perfectly and as you walk out he comes running in on your right and I definitely ran that last 30ft out. I was maybe 12 or 13 at the time, but that still sticks with me to this day. Great times.

Love the Director! I went through the Icons: Captured house about 10 times last year and the one time I saw him on the throne at the end, I applauded wildly and he bowed to me.

The Director is easily one of the best icons from HHN's long history. My brother is an enormous cinema buff, so Paulo is easily his favorite of the major icons. While it would be a lot of work, I would love to see videos exploring each of the icons, just because there is so much history to each of them and how each event is tied to them.

I have a 'thing' for The Director, this surprises no-one, but a completely wild fact you alluded to is that Gianni Garofalo was a musician. I did a little searching and one of his bands, One Inch Punch, has a complete banger of a song on the soundtrack of the 90's movie Romeo + Juliet! I've loved that song for decades and to make it even more exciting, his music partner Justin Warfield went on to be in another goth-adjacent music duo SHE WANTS REVENGE.

I’ve never been lucky enough to attend HHN so I didn’t know about lil boo but now he has my heart 🥺

I will always remember my experience at HH (Orlando). I cannot remember what year it was or even what House I was at. My partner and I were in a line and the person behind us started to chat with us. We chatted for about 20 minutes (length of the line)... only for the person to be grabbed as we entered into the house. She was dragged off kicking and screaming. I mean... how many staff did they plant in the line? How often were they going through the line. And just to give us and the people behind her the experience of someone dragging someone out of the line.... Crazy! That was still >10 years and I still vividly remember that part of the experience.

The footage used for “The Widow’s Eye” is from a Salvador Dali film, “Un Chien Andalou.” The version shown during the tour (unlike here, for obvious reasons) features the infamous close-up of the man with the straight razor slitting the victim’s eye. The effect was achieved by casting a woman who was missing that eye and replacing it with a cow’s eye for the shot.

To me the general concept of this person sounds like a marketing ploy to increase spooky traffic for universal. i.e. "he made a film killing people and was exiled from his country". I doubt that, he'd be locked up right away IMHO. Am I ignorant and did this really happen or is something not adding up?

These characters are created to give each year a specific theme and the stories are designed to create an atmosphere and lore that often carries into the years houses and theming. It's no secret, it's how these events and theme parks craft most of their lands.

I love how Disney no longer creates attractions with original characters and says they don’t work. When universal has created both earl the square and lil boo in recent years to a massive success. That squirrel now has his own merchandise and food line as well as a customed character

The Director is 100% the best icon! He's always been my favourite and the icon that turned me onto HHN. I remember seeing these promos for HHN on KZread for the Director and being really intrigued. Compare to the other icons, the Director is just a man; he needs no supernatural powers to make him scary. That is what is scariest; he could be like any one of us...

I think it’s interesting how the one year hhn wasn’t at studios, the icon was a movie director

Think maybe 31 this year is connected to 13 and the director in part due to the tribute theatre storyline? It is said that the director lived in an abandoned theatre and 31 is indeed the mirror image of 13.

I'd love a pet rat, but the short life span is kind of a turn-off...

I worked at HHN Hollywood in 2006. Originally, there -was- no live Director on the Terror Tram or anywhere else in the park. Guests complained about him not being there though, so by the second weekend some of the guys who'd been cast as Norman Bates were pulled and the wood chipper scene was added.

I shouldn’t be surprised that stuff is already getting spooky, since September (and all those rad yearly haunts) are only three days away, but still, surprised me a bit to see this. Looking forward to seeing what else you got in store for the season! This doesn’t really have to do with the video itself, but I just like your channel. and Halloween.

The Director was the icon for the year I was born and I definetly claim him as one of my favorites my other favorite would be Bloody Mary as my other favorite due to her being the first icon I clearly remember seeing on television as a child

Agreed! HHN Singapore has some of the most unique ideas for original stuff especially with the opening shows.

Honestly, he and The Usher are my favorite icons. I think they best tie into Universal’s history of making horror films.

I love that you give us such in-depth videos on HHN. Especially since so many of us have never had the chance to visit the parks. Since Universal Studios is so different from Orlando, it would be fascinating to learn more about the events history there. Can’t wait for this years overview!

I have to say I'm rather curious now about what the other Universal parks do with Horror Nights. I was always under the impression that it's true spirit was rather unique to Orlando but then for many years it was the only real stand alone park.

Love these videos. The lore of HHN is what drew me to the event. It's not just a random collection of scary stuff, it's full of backstory and richly designed characters.

Yeah, I really wish they'd bring back the street shows, like Carnival of Carnage, but I guess it would cause too much of a traffic jam given how insanely populated the event is now. Still, they do have the stage near Rip Ride Rocket that barely gets used, so I think something could be done there.

FYI, HHN's creative team would still be doing those things if it weren't for the Marketing department getting in the way. Take this year for example. A&D obviously wanted to push the Pumpkin Lord as a new icon, but Marketing would rather go with their generic "scream squad" crap and recycled tag line from last year. Marketing also chooses the IPs.

@@xviper2k i dont mind IPs, i just like having a solid theme to it all. 2018 and 2019 went retro/80s which was fun, and 2021 had the anniversary stuff which brought back the icons for a house. But this year feels so...idk boring i guess. Especially the cringy scream squad stuff. This year would have been a good one for a new icon

@@invaderpez12 It seems like they’re really trying to lean into a classic halloween theme this year for the 31st anniversary! The scream squad theme is embarrassing but the theme is actually pretty cohesive imo!

We need original Icons back! This year feels like it’s going to be old school HHN without an icon! Less IPs more original content!!

I actually want to hear all about Lil Boo though. 🥺 (I can't do much horror stuff due to PTSD, so this is my primary window. That pumpkin looks interesting!)

Throughout the video, I kept thinking of the John Waters film Cecil B. Demented (2000). I'm sure it's just parallel thinking, because, even though I've watched that movie hundreds of times, I think I am the only one. Great video, great start to spooky season 🎃

Plan on supporting you more when I can sir..like I said the other day I really enjoy your HHN videos..always great content..if you have a min I would just like to ask..when you go to Halloween events, what are YOU personally terrified of? Not jump scares persay but what creeps the f out of you lol? One year at Howl O Scream at BG Williamsburg we went through a haunted maze, at one point we reached a main room with 5 different hallways..in a group of about 14 people an actor separated us and I was sent down a hallway ALL ALONE..I will never forget that feeling..

I 100% want to see more episodes about haunt events outside the US or even Orlando. As much as I love watching HHN, one of the things that keeps me coming back to this particular channel is the willingness to cover parks and attractions I (as an American that doesn't get to travel) will never get to see. I know a lot of the Asian houses are a lot different (and in many cases more intense) than US haunts tend to be, and I'd adore more coverage of them. I know there's a few permanent walkthroughs in Japan although I can't remember specific details without a bunch of research. But the Universal Singapore houses are always -extremely- different than the US ones and I think very much deserve their own coverage, if nothing else.

Halloween Horror Nights is my favorite topic covered on this channel! I can't wait for your coverage of this years festivities, as I'm really interested in the story/theming of the Sweet Revenge scare zone. 🍬

The thing I’m upset about is that we will never get islands of adventure to celebrate the event. Someone like me who missed out on prime Halloween horror nights will never get to expirence

Thank you! 🎃 In Barcelona (Spain) We have Horrorland, started in a real empty Nuclear plant years ago and now in a closed Water park, the hounted houses are a bit less detailed but they do an amazing job with the scares, in all the 7 rides you can be touched or pushed for real not only walking and looking like in american rides. Some rides has small parts as a scape rooms and others are big arenas with 30 people running away from 5 monsters to not be killed. They do a Xtreme house too where you need to agree and sign a small contract before enter.. it is so crazy!! Very intense , fun, interactive and the actors give a lot of passion! It is 18+ only. I hope all Halloween fans can enjoy it sometime.

13 was my first year and Director is still one of my favorite icons. I wish they would bring back doing original icons.

I might be late to the party here, but the Halloween Horror Nights events in Singapore are really well done and have always fascinated me. Plus they have continued to have icons, which has been great.
