    I'm just happy to see this album being *discussed* ! -- Another Perfect Day didn't come on my radar til about 5 years ago, and my impression of the album is that Lemmy tried to combine his trademark aesthetic with tight songwriting: he wanted catchy pop songs without compromising Motörhead's DNA, and they totally succeeded imo. EDIT: who cares if no track from APD end up on compilations: this one is strictly for the heads! and who buys a fkn compilation anyway?! I'm w Martin on this one, as is any serious Motörhead aficionado.

    I revisited all the Motörhead stuff up to Sacrifice and this came only second to Overkill in my estimation. Maybe only because of familiarity I also prefer the slower bluesy songs on this album. I’ve got two dozen other albums for the aggressive fast tracks, the title track and One Track Mind is where Robbo really shines. So many layers of guitars, solos coming in out even some affects and an atmosphere to the record. In another life maybe Robbo could’ve made some Shoegaze. The fast songs don’t hit me the same as the Eddie tracks. Also I love the debut, it’s punky, it’s got so many of their best songs and it’s got a unique sound unlike their later albums. Maybe it’s the Hawkwind fan in me but its a favourite. Of the later stuff I might put Bastards, Sacrifice, Inferno and 1916 over 2/3 fast Eddie albums.

    I've not really heard any Motorhead after Rock n Roll. The first Motorhead I had was a Castle Communication release that had paired Overkill with Another Perfect Day, so I played them to death. Overkill is my favourite album, but APD is a close second. No Remorse the post APD compilation has Shine and Dancing on your Grave. There are only 2 tracks from Bomber, 3 from Ace of Spades , 4 from Overkill , 2 from No Sleep and Iron Fist. The rest being single only tracks or new recordings.

    Yeah, this one is my favorite too - along with Bastards. Motörhead never made a bad album. Had no clue the North American versions had a different track order, so I learned something new today. I probably got this album for the first time on CD in the early 2000’s and it was the U.K. - and I’m assuming band approved, order used.

  • @LarryFleetwood8675
    @LarryFleetwood86752 жыл бұрын

    I would say APD and Bastards are the best from the post-Eddie era, which is still my fave Motorhead period. Many of their later albums had an even more recognizable style, lacking the bluesy feel that Eddie added to the songs but I suppose they had to change and go heavier, had they not and stuck to their classic sound they may have ended as a band even before the '80s ended. This album though I remember wasn't well received by neither fans nor critics, it's only later on it gained a reputation. At the time I think it was considered too much of a departure musically, even too clean sounding and less gritty but even Saxon pretty much always sounded 'big' like this it just wasn't what Motorheadbangers expected from their band. "Rock It", though apparently not a single surprisingly, got quite a bit of airplay in Europe I recall. Maybe it was a case of radio simply flipping over the 3 song pre-release promo 'EP' featuring three songs; One Track Mind, I Got Mine and Rock It. The two first mentioned songs with mixes different to the album, listed on the sleeve as (believe it or not) AOR edits.

    While it’s not my favourite it is a good album. Always thought it would have been better if Turn You Round was on the original album though. It’s great. I think 1916 is one of their very best albums by the way. Maybe even my very favourite, I feel that that was their comeback album not Bastards, as that didn’t even chart in the US or the UK

    Gave a like to this video immediately. Definitely a contrarian choice but has long been my favorite Motoralbum as well. I owned this on the original vinyl format and was blown away from beginning to end. To hell with "Die You Bastard" being "a bit naff" as heard in recent documentaries. That song still blows me away every time. Brian Robertson was definitely "A bit musical" and it pays off here. I go back to this album often.

    I agree that this is a very worthy catalog entry and the subtle changes brought by Robbo and Platt are welcome new wrinkles in the formula. (Going forward, it would be these occasional new features that would keep Motorhead from becoming stale). Robbo's tone on APD is gritty enough, but he does a bit of brighter arpeggio picked chord voicings (never part of Fast Eddie's vocabluary), and Platt puts a bit of studio sparkle on there, but otherwise we get proper Motor-esque 6 string grime. And the tunes are really inspired overall.

    I don't know about about the Born Again comparison. Another perfect day has got lots of strong songs on it, that today are regarded as Motörhead classics (I Got Mine, Dancing On Your Grave, Back At The Funny Farm...). Born Again sounds like it was recorded in a drunken stupor. The first Motörhead album isn't one of the worst in the band's catalogue. Motorhead, Vibrator, Lost Johnny, Iron Horse, Keep Us On The Road, On Parole, all great stuff, I love that album, it's essential Motörhead to me. "Ace Of Spades" now? Are you out of your mind? Go through this album track by track and you have nine of my favourite Motorhead bangers of all time. And I am a Motorhead fan for 36 years now, I know all of their albums, and my favourite song is not Ace Of Spades. Dear god. That shocks me.

    I absolutely love this album. I bought it on vinyl when it came out. It sometimes is my favourite and never leaves my top 5. Perhaps this is the contrarian in me but I'm really into what I call bands going against the grain. By that I mean bands not doing what's expected of them,like say Tank's Power of the hunter album is my favourite because it doesn't have a typical "heavy" production. In the case of Motorhead it's choosing a guy like Brian Robertson to come in and it shouldn't work but it does and the differences he brings only make things more interesting. I just love that whole concept. Great episode,Marco and Martin. By the way,Martin,speaking of Tank,how about a ranking of their albums with Mr.Pardo? Excluding the non-Algy Ward ones of course! That's like Black Sabbath without Iommi or.....Motorhead without Lemmy!

    I agree with a lot of Martin's points regarding the Motörhead catalog. I'd rank the debut as their worst for sure (I like March Or Die actually) and their 90s trio of Bastards/Sacrifice/Overnight Sensation is probably my favorite period from them. The years after that were their "difficult" years in my opinion, with three albums that were not very good (not bad either). Their last phase started gloriously with Inferno - man, what a heavy and focused monster of an album. After that it was more (Motörizer) or less (The World Is Yours) greatness up until the end. And Another Perfect Day is a great album, no doubt. Headless Cross, too, by the way :-)

  • @delorangeade
    @delorangeade2 жыл бұрын

    This is easily my favourite Motorhead album, but then I approach it as a Brian Robertson fan rather than a Motorhead fan. I think it's a great guitar album with the added melodicism and layered arrangements transforming the band's template enough to make it a much more interesting prospect, as well as containing some great solos. Brian Robertson is possibly one of the biggest wasted talents in rock history. It's worth noting that when Robbo left Motorhead he took Phil Taylor with him, I think to work on a new project with Chris Glenn on bass. That may well have soured Lemmy's opinion of this period just a little. Lemmy was sufficiently impressed by Another Perfect Day to hire two guitar players for his next line-up of Motorhead, so something must have stuck. I have a signed copy of this album I picked up in the discount rack, as it was notably less successful than previous Motorhead albums in the UK.

  • @hevihoo

    Another Perfect Day is absolutely a great one! The classic line up did their thing first and mlre than earned their legendary status but I really do believe that the band has many records that are as good as the classics or even better. Orgasmatron, 1916, Sacrifice, Inferno and Motörizer are the best of the later stuff for me. There are really good ones between or after these too but there is that something extra that works for me in this bunch. Just the right timing for the release might have something to do with it but I think that there's some certain quality in the songwriting there. A good mix of faster rockers, slower ones and the more experimental songs. Just the flow of the album or something. I don't have a perfect answer why but those are the ones I most often revisit. As for Sabbath's Headless Cross. I think there are more epic songwriting there and overall one of the greatest vocal performances of Tony Martin on a record. When Death Calls, Nightwing and the title track are just powerful, dark and heavy represent well how good the Martin era actually was. But then again it's almost impossible for me to choose between The Eternal Idol, Headless Cross and Tyr. I like them all a lot. The only thing I'm absolutely certain of is that of the five records they did with TM Forbidden is without a doubt the worst.

    I'm not sure it's their best (1916, IMO), but this one is killer - melancholy bad boy vibe (the rarest of rock emotions, see also Thunders, J. and Social Distortion) with amazing amazing guitar playing. Also agree that their golden era (Lemmy, Phil, Fast Eddie stuff) isn't as great as what they did later.

    I have not watched this ep. yet, but can easily concur with this very Contrarian choice without having done so! I simply loved B. Robertson's guitar work on this album, Tony Platt's nicely polished (for Motorhead) knob job behind the boards, and even the previously who'd of ever thunk it use of Fender Rhodes and piano on a couple of tracks!! Besides, as far as accusations of over-commercial and sell-out might have been at the time, nowhere near as refined as those Peter Solley-produced platters from the early nineties, or some of the Bill Laswell-handled tracks on "Orgasmatron." Yeah, I still have one of those crappy old original Polygram cassette versions of this album, in which by the end of each side there starts to be a real deterioration sound, and it's not even an overly long release!! P.S., '83 was a great if unintentional Contrarian year for Tony Platt, what with his fine engineering work on AC/DC's best B. Johnson-era album, "Flick Of The Switch". All opinions to the contrary are absolutely erroneous and infinitely incorrect!!!

    @@thecontrarians2438 Postscript: Just finished watching, and congratulations on achieving the fiftieth episode in the regular series, great stuff, even though I still have a lot to catch up on! Also, I love how you always include lots of photos of the international cassette versions. Dead format to most sensible folks, but I will always have a soft spot for 'em, 'cause ninety-percent of my original collection was amassed in that highly-controversial format. Still paying ridiculous storage fees to 'house' both them and the majority of my CD collection due to inhospitable and squalid living conditions. Friendly tip to the younglings out there: Keep pilfering (lol!) and streaming your music; don't be a future Hoarders 'contestant' like yours truly inevitably will turn out to be...!!

    Fantastic Pick! This has been my favorite Motorhead album since it's release. Better musicianship, better production, and great songs. I love all 10 songs on the original release. "I really like this jacket but the sleeves are much too long" is classic Lemmy! This was my first time seeing the band at a dumpy little club in Berkeley, CA. They were listed on the schedule board as the "Kingston Trio" and played from 12:30 - 2:00AM. An amazing show

    I always loved Another Perfect Day. Bought it when it came out, played it over and over. But it did change the formula a bit. Ace Of Spades is the best because of its economy, its straightforward effectiveness. It makes the hardest, most compact impact with just one treacherous false pause: The Chase Is Better Than The Catch, treacherous because of its unrelenting tension and for leading to The Hammer. I never got to hear Rock'n'Roll but when I heard 1916, back in 1991, I passed - this was no longer the band I once loved. Then I got March Or Die and never heard anything passed that one.

    This sounds like a dis, but I don't mean it that way. Motorhead more or less made the same album over and over, and how great the individual albums are depends on the strength of the songs, and how inspired the performances were. I don't see APD as much of a departure from the norm, really. I also would put it in the top half, even top 5 records they ever did.

    I think fans would have forgiven Robbo for wearing shorts on tour if the band had played a few of the old songs. I think they simply played the whole new album, and only ‘The Chase is Better than the Catch’ from the previous albums. That’d test anyone’s patience! [edit] Just checked the set lists and I guess it wasn’t quite that bad, but it looks like they pretty much ditched the classic songs apart from Iron Horse/Born to Lose

APD is my favorite Motorhead album, and I think it's an album that alot of Motorhead fans have taken more of a liking to over the years. I don’t have a problem with this choice. I think the problem with it does have is that it may start to move towards something a bit slightly polished and some people don’t want to hear or even think of Motörhead that way. Plus the loss of the “original” guitarist will always give some people the excuse the slam any album afterwards. Also I want to Echo Martin‘s comment about latter day Motörhead being really good. In fact my contrarian choice for best Motörhead album would probably be Inferno. That album is so heavy and then ends with the, dare I say, beautiful song Whorehouse Blues.

    I can honestly say I never met a Motorhead album I didn't like. conversely, I love very few Motorhead LPs. if I had to choose one, I suppose I have to be predictable and go with Overkill. it's a sweet spot for me of raw and dirty and uncompromising-without being unlistenable. as for Another Perfect Day-maybe?_it's slick for Motorhead, but I don't think it's slick compared to any other metal band of the time. it's definitely not an album I'd skip in their catalogue. I also feel compelled to defend Rock 'n' Roll as the most genuinely humorous record by Motorhead. it might not be the best, but it's the funniest!

    I bought Another Perfect Day when it came out. It was still almost the meanest stuff I knew. Yes, Metallica was in the pipeline but not yet on my turntable. Priest was tame in comparison. This album has come up on SOT a lot the last couple of years so, I gave it a shot. I actually like it. I would have skipped this video had you chosen any other album of theirs. I normally don't care for Motorhead that much beyond Ace Of Spades. I never quite got Lemmy's vocals. They would have been a cool band with a real singer. I know that's blasphemy in the Metal world but, there are a lot of Metal bands like that for me. I like melodic singers and avoid shouty "vocalists".

    Love this album and for me 'Rock It' has a wonderful coda. Here in the U.K,. from reviews i've read in later years, the album seems to have been reassessed as one of their best. I was present at one of their concerts with this line-up but the fans gave Brian Robertson a such a hard time which was a shame. Lemmy was not a happy bunny. Controversially i think Ace Of Spades is overrated although a very good Motorhead album there are many others, especially in the latter part of their career, which are superior to my mind. As a final point i wonder if the majority of real die hard fans would place Ace Of Spades at the apex of their career? Certainly commercially but musically?
