The Container Concept Explained

I talk about The Container Concept ALL the time. Like, in pretty much every video and in almost every podcast and as an answer to every decluttering question I'm asked. So here's a visual demonstration of the Container Concept.

I live alone. When you said that your family gets priority space in the container that is your house, I realized that I was valuing stuff more than I value myself. I am worthy of that priority space! Epiphany! Thank you for helping me see MY own value. This changes everything.

I love the comparison to fire fighters setting the boundaries to contain fire. That is a great visual thought for me to keep in my mind. If I do not set the boundarkes and contain my stuff, my home will be in a big big trouble!

I have been trying for so long to explain to my 14 year old, about keeping what she has room for. I couldn't explain it in a way her artistic brain could get it. I found your video and asked her to watch it. After she finished, she cleaned up, decluttered, and organized her room in under 5 hours. Normally it is about a 3 day process that is frustrating for both of us. She said you spoke her language. My husband watched your video. He is now outside cleaning his workshop. Thank you so much!

If you have art pens, one in every color of ink/paper that you use, plus a few blender pens, you can easily need 100 pens. I'm fine with limiting myself to 100 (plus a few back-up duplicates for the colors I use the most often) but I'll have to process this concept using something besides pens. (Or kitchen tools) I have a ton. I use them all. I do need containers that keep those things organized and easy to access, use and put away again. I'll happily take a moment today to test and throw out any pens that don't work, and put extra pens away in a box I can "shop" from later. That makes sense to me.

  • @RachelLWolfe

@@carlaeskelsen I do have art pens that I use for scrapbooking, as I have time. When I was laid off, I had some spare time so the pens came out, and were used quite often. Now that I'm back to work, my time to do things I want when I'm home is limited, because of all the other things that need to be done, so I haven't pulled my art pens out in a while. I'm going to try to make an effort to do so though, because I do need to finish the scrapbooks I'm working on. I also have writing pens I love using, and those get used regularly. They're so good that I have a few packs tucked away to use as the others get used up. I do go through them pretty quickly. They are all I use at work and at home. And then I have some "keepsake" pens that are kinda pricey, and were either gifts, or pens I purchased while on a trip, and are a token reminder of the experience. I have the majority of my writing pens in a box, that as you said, I can "shop from" from time to time, and on occasion I do get them out, test them, and toss the ones that don't work anymore. My art pens are with my craft/scrapbooking stiff, neatly organized in one area. The pens could be better organized though. Glad I'm not the only one with a stash of pens, though!! Lol!! 😁😉

Digital art has saved me so many headaches from collecting too many pens. After a week or two of getting used to the new hand-eye coordination i don't need so many sharpies/copic markers anymore. Infinite colors and saves space, a cheap graphics tablet from either wacom or any offbrand starts around $59 or higher depending on your budget and how professional you want your workflow to be as an artist. I personally still use an old wacom bamboo from ages ago (CTH470) but these aren't even produced anymore.

Oh my god.... I did not know there was a hoarding subtype of OCD. I'm beginning to think that's what is going on with me! I am in the throws of a shopping addiction and I constantly justify the things I am buying by saying "oh I can make ____ with this!" Or "I don't have this color!" . Also, when I am looking at for example 3 of the same type of plant at a store, I stand there FOREVER staring at each one attempting to choose the " best" one of the 3. Each plant looks slightly different (less leaves, darker color leaves, dried out, ECT), so my brain tells me I have to pick the best looking, healthiest, most colorful, biggest, plant. Employees follow me around when I'm shopping bc they think I'm trying to steal stuff, when I'm standing there micro inspecting items..

This is something I’ve been practicing my whole adult life. My “pen” is coffee mugs. I love them, but I only allow myself to have one shelf of coffee mugs in my kitchen cabinets. All this means is that I have a very high standard for the coffee mugs that I will allow myself to buy, because I know it means I have to get rid of one of the other coffee mugs I love. Not only does this keep me organized, but it’s a great way to avoid spending money on frivolous, unnecessary items

This is in no way meant to be rude… there is another container to be addressed. This is your daughter’s room. It’s for your daughter to live and her stuff. Party supplies don’t get mixed in her container. I know it’s possible you have a small home or difficulty finding storage space, but the concept which includes respecting personal boundaries is one I wish I learned way better as a child. It has so many implications in life. Again, I don’t mean to offend.

This could be totally out of left field, but as you know hoarding usually has underlying forces. ADHD is a common force that effects hoarders, and it’s something often missed in women or femme people because their symptoms aren’t as “noticeable”. If you think you might have ADHD than it could be life changing to get medication. Cleaning and organization is still hard for me but if I went untreated my house would be in complete chaos. I live in PA and decided to visit my brother and sister-in-law in Tennessee. My SIL asked if I would help her organize her kitchen when I visited. I knew that would require decluttering more than organizing. The first thing we did was watch the container method KZread video together. The next day, we watched a One Hour Better master bedroom youtube video so they could understand your 5 steps. I knew when I heard them talking afterward about only needing their two favorite spatulas and two favorite cutting boards that we were home free! The next day, the project began with progress and only progress. We all marveled at how non-stressful your method is. The kitchen is almost done, and it is miraculous how doable this is. I have every confidence they will work on the rest of the house when I am gone. Thank you, Dana. We think you are a genius. ❤

I think this naturally leads to a transition of no longer buying “in-between” short term products and into buying long term “forever” products. (Like the difference between slow and fast fashion.) You start buying things based off favorites, and quality over quantity. Which can lend itself to the one in one out rule. Using products to their fullest and only buying when you need a replacement. Instead of buying 50 pens of poor quality cause it’s seemingly cheaper you buy one pen that lasts as long if not longer than those, and has higher quality ink and flow. Now you only need space for one pen and replace only when that one pen runs out.

Holy moly. Where was this 2 years ago - not in my youtube recommendations that's for sure! This is... just... I think the same way as you and have found Marie Kondo-ing individual items to be impossible, and it's so hard to not just most onto other spaces to fill when the original place for something gets full. I really love this!!

  • @nancydickerson7920
    @nancydickerson79203 жыл бұрын

Coming from a very tight budget perspective and raised by survivors of the Depression and WWII, Marie Kondo's idea of keeping things that "spark joy" instead out of serious "shoulds" and "oughts", was like hearing someone speak Martian. I heard without fully grasping the concept. What a decadent idea! But with that idea getting a foot in the door, I've been slowly able to assimilate ideas like the container concept. Just being able to identify my favorites was a big step, not necessarily going item by item. Then when I put my favorites in first and the container fills up, everything "clicks", to use Marie's term. I get such a sense of joy from looking at a container of my favorite, most used and most needed things. It's sort of like famous sculptor's saying that he just removed all the wood, stone, or clay that wasn't part of the "person" he envisioned inside. Decluttering from a situation of too much good stuff feels incredibly rich to me compared to keeping everything during "poor years" to try to manage when I couldn't buy what was needed. When I can get past all the "shoulds and oughts," it gets to be fun! Money management has always been stressful and depressing for me. It's just occurred to me that the container concept actually applies here. I can choose to spend my money on whatever I want, I just can't spend it on everything I want. I'm just starting to work with this idea (after moving three times in 23 months), but it's already having the effect of letting some light into a previous joyless, obligatory process. Wish me luck.

@@jadeyvette That invisible piece in all this, our supply lines, does make a huge difference in our decisions about what we can safely let go. I went through decades of this, saving everything, but it ended up overwhelming me and burying me under stuff. I missed out on time with my children because I had to spend so much time managing stuff, and you never get that back. Going without what you really need is difficult, but so is being overwhelmed, discouraged, and not being able to find what you need (that you think you have somewhere) when you need it. Dana's ideas about a Clutter Threshold and the Container Concept and Not Making a Bigger Mess have helped me tremendously. Previously I was still over cluttered and overwhelmed even in the empty-nest stage. Finding the balance that is right for you is difficult, which is why no one can do it for you. But Hell for me was having lots of stuff, but not the stuff I actually needed most, and being so overwhelmed with stuff I thought I was supposed to keep that I didn't really need that I didn't even know what I needed most. Things are better now. I do keep clothes that fit me at a lower weight because I can't buy clothes my size in my area, and I'm working on weight loss. That's my supply line issue. As is the fact that I'm too arthritic to drive out-of-town, and we no longer have anything but 2 dollar stores here besides tourist T-shirt shops. If they sold clothes my size in town, I would let the ones I'm keeping go to save space, assuming I could afford new ones or new used ones when the time came. I used to sew my own clothes using Stretch & Sew patterns and cotton knit fabric, but that 100% cotton knit is no longer available to fabric stores, so there's another supply line gone. Good luck working with your supply-line issues and budget!. But don't give up valuing your peace of mind in the process.

@@nancydickerson7920 You've mentioned an important consideration: supply lines. Especially with big business's "just-in-time" supply chain models (which has TOTALLY hamstrung us under COVID), it has made me a little gun shy on pulling the trigger to get rid of some things. Everything's fine...until it's not. Everybody should have a substantial backstocked pantry, water filtration, cash on hand, etc. as a hedge against various catastrophes. But all that aside, I believe Dana also says two considerations in decluttering are: replacement cost and availability. For her, items less than $25 can go (she'll take the risk of needing to replace it). For most of us that's a ballpark cut off figure. If something is rare or hard to replace (e.g. appropriate clothing in your size) it may get to stay. Like the late Ted Kennedy, I have a 20lb wardrobe (2 sizes) b/c I tend to flux over the course of a couple of years. I also have a few pieces of favorite "goal" clothes, just in case. And I don't sweat it. It's fun and keeps the options open. As time goes along, I declutter pieces that no longer fit my gravity-ravaged body. 😅 (Sleeveless shirts, anybody?)

Yeah, as someone who got into budgeting a couple of years ago it really does resonate with me as being a similar concept. It's all really about trade-offs. It is fine to have 10 jars of pens if you are an artist or even if you just collect pens. The key is that you need to have room for them. If there isn't room, the options are having less pens or having less of something else. Maybe there's another hobby you used to do but realistically won't be anymore. Realizing that you can have all the pens if you get rid of the items from that other hobby may be the push you need to do that. I've mostly decluttered the living room of random stuff, but there's still a lot of things on shelves like DVDs. Even though I haven't watched a DVD in ages, it is hard to let go of them for various reasons. But I realized that I have some stuff I use on a regular basis that I've been keeping in a corner behind a couch. At some point while reading Dana's book and looking at the shelves, a lightbulb went off. I was like "Hey.. if I get rid of some of these DVDs, I could put other stuff on the shelf instead, like that stuff I've been keeping behind the couch that I actually use on a regular basis". The "slob vision" of ignoring the clutter for so long had blinded me to the fact that I can put whatever I want on the shelves. That excitement of thinking of the possibilities for how I could use the shelves is helpful to push past the discomfort of getting rid of things. It is kind of the "one in one out" on a larger scale. I'm not asking if the DVDs have value, but are they more worthy than the other items I could put on the shelves?

Dana actually had a neat recommendation of using a moving calculator. Where you specify the rooms you have and their size and it estimates how many boxes you need. But instead put in the stats of the place you're moving TO. Then using that as a loose guide to how many boxes you should be packing and have that be a limiting container on how much to keep before moving.

LOL, I never realized that I used the container method but I do. I gave up dressers in the bedroom years ago. My closet has shelves and I went to the Dollar Tree and bought stacks of white dish bins. All of my foldables are folded so they can stand up in the bin, I'm small so 8 t -shirts fit perfectly. If I get another t-shirt one in the bin one has to go. The beauty of it, other than keeping the number of things I have to a minimum, is that I never have to straighten my bins. Saves space, saves money, and definitely saves time. I made little cute black labels for the bins. I could certainly afford to go to the container store, or pottery barn, etc for neat, fancy containers, but these look fun, and work great.

This video just came to me out of the blue and I didn't expect to end up spending all night doing more cleaning! I'm an artist and all around crafty person, and I thought I'd already organized things to the best they were going to be. Now I have three trashbags full of things to throw away and two donation boxes. I wasn't expecting to spend my entire night on this, but watching more of your videos as I cleaned kept me going the entire time. I didn't realize how much I was holding onto that I didn't need and my space gives me so much more confidence in finding the things I do need than I did before. Thank you so so much!!

Same here. This just popped up on my YT. I wasn’t even searching for this stuff. I’m an artist/ crafty and absolutely love everything, everything has value to me in a sense. If someone would ask me for it I would give it to them but for me to throw it away… heartbreaking. My donate stuff gets put in the closet because I never remember to take it to goodwill.. forgetting what was in that box..I end up going back through it at some point and it’s a feeling of I just got a grab bag of familiar feelings. I don’t know why, but I cannot handle an empty wall, corner, or large spaces between furniture. I’m not a hoarder like the tv show but my if I exposed the stuff in my closets and cabinets it would be very overwhelming to look at. Ugh. I just got a visual and I think it’s time to expose the past 20 years and see what I’m holding on to or protecting. Sorry for venting to you.. lol you caught my attention.. you being an artist and crafty made you familiar to me. No one close to me understands the art / beauty in everything. Note to self..Mixing all the colors or too many unnecessary details…just makes it ugly. Lol

For anyone who tried this but it doesn't work, plz don't feel bad. While I was still having too much of a few things at times, for the most part I ate extremely healthfully already and had hypoglycemia and other issues. Couldn't eat too low fat, already ate almost no sugar ever & not much fruit. Wasn't "working out" but was still milking a small herd of cows 2x a day and walking aways up the pasture daily to find the mom-to-be that kept hiding, to check on her. Kept gaining weight anyway once I hit 30 ( never had kids, either ). I ate what we grew, had little $, so that also made some of my choices what they were & I had a choc. milk addiction at the time ( homemade - no sweetener at all- raw milk, cocoa & real vanilla ) which has since turned into a coffee ( or fake coffee ) w cream addiction I'm having impossible time breaking. Gluten free cause I def. react to it. Don't eat GF breads etc. cept rarely, lotta refined stuff in em, I get the better stuff, again, rarely. I still gain weight fairly easily & don't lose it without lotta excercise.

I decluttered my hobbies a few years ago when my children were small. The kickstart to it was when my husband let it slip that he was making me a fancy wooden cabinet for Christmas to store my beading supplies in and I felt overwhelmed instead of grateful. I realized I liked beading but my time was limited (a container) and that I would also pick a different activity before I would pick beading even though I liked it because I liked other things better. So I gave away all my beading stuff, them my polymer clay, then most of my yarn, and ended up keeping my sewing supplies and my painting and drawing supplies. I still have way too much stuff and have to spend more time cleaning up the clutter than actually creating stuff- like right now my sewing machine is buried under clutter so i can't even use it. So I guess it's time to evaluate what favorites get to fit in my container of space and time.

A favorite declutter process of mine: the 30-day challenge. Let go of one thing the first day, 2 on the second day, 3 things on the third, etc. At the end of 30 days you’ll have released 465 things. Now, no cheating-20 old rubber bands don’t count on day 20, but a jar full of old rubber bands can be ONE disposable item. It’s amazing how much fun it can be; after a few days it can turn into a game, a challenge. “Okay, what can I find to let go of today?!” I filled the trunk and backseat of my Camry twice doing this and took it to charity, plus selling some things and trashing other stuff. Felt 100 pounds lighter at the end of 30 days, and haven’t missed a thing that I let go of.

It's a cool idea, but I think for people like me that resonated Dana's books, it'd be important to do it in the context she lays out. Starting with visible areas, starting with trash, easy stuff, asking the two decluttering questions, cutting things down to the containers, etc. Then using the 30 day challenge as part of that to limit how much you're doing each day. Without her strategy to help, I think it'd be easy to get overwhelmed looking at a wall of stuff, or just declutter things in a closet and lose motivation half-way through.

When the toys were no longer being picked up, left laying around; well it's time to pack those toys away. 1 day no toys. Open different box tomorrow, happy boys who are happy to pick up these toys, engaged in fresh play. They felt riich and neighbors loved to come to our house to play.

My mom grew up as a child with no toys overseas, so the overabundance of American Life used to make her sick, so a lot of our toys went to local hospitals and toy drives for low income families and we've always had a spirit of sharing

I thought I could learn how to be more organized from watching him and listening to his advice. I could NEVER think like him and I felt like a failure. Not only me but he was totally angry with my son who had the same problem as me. He felt bad too. Every week after my son hit age 13, my husband would be angry with him about his very messy bedroom. I became very depressed and went to a counselor to try to communicate better with my husband. It helped in some ways but I was still not able to better organize or help my son. With your help in explaining the different way to think through decluttering, I feel as though I can help myself. Bless your heart for your youtube video ! ! !

Heather Legler made a comment here about decluttering her food intake when her clothing (container) starts getting too tight. What a great extension of the container concept! To carry the idea further, I didn't realize I've been using the container concept to successfully lose weight by designating the number of calories per day that my body/container can use. I count loosely but keep below the target by enough to make up for having to make a lot of educated guesses. (I cook and eat a lot of things that I can't find a calorie count for.) I eat what appeals to me, but limit the amount or skip something I'm less hungry for. It's working!

I really found this helpful, I did wonder then why the value of stuff gets to be defined by the size of my containers not the intrinsic value of the stuff but I get that if you want to live in a calm, decluttered home, that you only have the space that you have and so there are limits and choices to be made based on that space. So am wrestling with blaming the container and trying to remember the end goal which is a calm, peaceful and happy home filled with love, not stuff!

U poor dear ! Plz yes, don't feel so bad anymore ! BTW u may also like the book " the house that cleans itself " - it's awesome and fun, too ! I was already pretty decent at troubleshooting but it still opened my eyes in ways. Extremely helpful.

I have trouble tidying and keeping things tidy. But tonight as I was listening to your video I just started putting things away and throwing things in the recycling bin so thank you for keeping me company and for your compassion for people who struggle with organisation.

Dana THANK YOU!! Thank you for making all this stuff make sense. The container concept is so freeing, and makes complete sense. Please keep making videos. Blessings! ❤️

Dana - This is THE BEST video for me. I'm sure plenty of people naturally do this (like one of my best friends can) with no thinking required - it's just automatic for her. Not me - I'm the idea person - the no limits person - literally an out of the box thinker. So I added boxes to my thinking - for years I thought adding containers would help me be organized. Hasn't really worked yet because thinking that way, I keep needing more boxes! Apparently my house container can only hold so much:) Thank you for breaking this down SO CLEARLY. I only need one drawer container of socks. This is actually making me feel very good about letting things go. I put my most comfy socks in first and the rest are now in donation box.

This is such a good video. I have no idea how this ended up in my recommended (I watch Minecraft/valheim and architecture/city design videos) but I’m soooo glad it did. My house is kinda a mess, and my pen-loving self has like 3-4 pen pouches. “I don’t need ALL of these pens” hurts my soul but I know, logically, that I don’t use many of my pens daily or even weekly. As a side note, I was watching videos about how more traffic lanes doesn’t reduce traffic in the long run because more people will fill the lanes and ironically this kinda matches this concept that adding more containers won’t contain the problem for long because there’s gonna be stuff that fills that space.

Heh. My daughter’s a transportation planner and that is exactly what she’s currently beating her head against - how to convince the public we need fewer multi-lane monstrosities here, not more. It’s so counter-intuitive but it’s true! She’s something of a minimalist and I’m stuck in the “family house” with five generations of stuff driving me crazy. 🤷‍♀️

I think this might be the best and most helpful decluttering concept I've come across. It has shifted my point of view completely. I most certainly wasn't born knowing this and I can't thank you enough for teaching me what appeared to be obvious to everyone but me. Choose what you love + stick to the limits of your container = have a jar filled with joy (so much more effective than going through everything and seeing if it "sparks joy" to the point of getting decision fatigue and leaving the container - and the floor - in a bigger mess than before) Love from Argentina! PS: Dana, I really think the world's Spanish-speaking community would benefit from this, let me know if you ever feel like making subtitles in Spanish for it. I'm a translator and would love to do it for free so that your message reaches the rest of the continent!

Reality check when designating a container: "How many do I *need* to get through a use/maintenance cycle, like dishes, laundry cycle or seasons for clothes, etc.

@@lewanna5898 yes, me too! The total available space is the ultimate limit, got it, but how to divide it up? I wanted to set priorities based on something meaningful - less than too much, but "enough". Dana jokes about "clothes math", but I needed to know, "how many/much do I need (of whatever it is being contained)? One day's worth of dishes if I run a dishwasher nightly, One week's worth of in season clothes if I do laundry weekly... Maybe a rainbow of colored pens...

This is gonna be so helpful. I’m an artist, and I have so many things I don’t need and everything’s such a mess that it’s asking so much to make decisions on every single thing. I also have most of my childhood toys and stuffed animals. I have such an issue with “abandoning” them (Toy Story screwed me up). But I guess I realize that if I can declutter my art supplies (things that don’t have feelings) with this method, I will have more space to keep the stuffed animals and toys that I value.

Using Toy Story and KonMari, I've encouraged my kids to think about what their ABSOLUTE FAVORITE toys are... and which toys do they like, but not LOVE? Then, we bless other kids by releasing those liked toys so they can be loved by others. :)

I love this idea, thank you for sharing. I have been decluttering but the thing I’m struggling with at the moment is actually the number of tasks and projects I’ve gradually accumulated, because I see the value in doing all of them (even though it’s impossible). I am going to try creating some kind of “container” to limit how many things I am committing to at any one time!

The questions that make my brain spin out. That's it right there. Asking the questions is supposed to be the key to decluttering. Nope. The questions make me feel anxious and then I give up, and think it's hopeless. This is definitely the way to go for me. My house is already so much better, and I'm not even done yet. Thank you.

SIMPLE. BUT BRILLIANT. 🙌🏼 I’m also someone who sees the value in everything, so getting rid of things is hard. (like literally even empty cardboard boxes😂) What hit me the most was when you said “you don’t have to NOT see the value in something to get rid of it”. If I don’t have space, it’s gotta go ✌🏼
