The Constitution, the Articles, and Federalism: Crash Course US History #8

In which John Green teaches you about the United States Constitution. During and after the American Revolutionary War, the government of the new country operated under the Articles of Confederation. While these Articles got the young nation through its war with England, they weren't of much use when it came to running a country. So, the founding fathers decided to try their hand at nation-building, and they created the Constitution of the United States, which you may remember as the one that says We The People at the top. John will tell you how the convention came together, some of the compromises that had to be made to pass this thing, and why it's very lucky that the framers installed a somewhat reasonable process for making changes to the thing. You'll learn about Shays' Rebellion, the Federalist Papers, the elite vs rabble dynamic of the houses of congress, and start to find out just what an anti-federalist is.

    So, im currently reading the federalist papers. Probably almost 5 years since I left high school and 7 years since I left my AP US history class when I saw this video for the first time. I highly recommend anyone that is genuinely interested in American history to please read the constitution and the federalist papers as well to get a better grasp of our government and truly appreciate how beautifully written it was. (Minus the slavery and Native American parts obviously) it's important to judge history with a non biased viewpoint and not look at it from a modern lens because you don't know what people went through at the time.

    It's kinda ignorant to suggest Hamilton wouldn't have thought that firearms would evolve, being that while they were penning the Constitution, numerous firearms were available that sought to end the Musket/Pennsylvania Long Rifle's one shot fire mechanism. From the Puckle Gun to Congress's offer of the Belton Flintlock, there were many weapons in that time that tried to jumpstart rapid fire weapon evolution. Also, James Madison confirmed that Cannons were consititutionally protected under the 2nd Amendment. A cannon then is what a drone is now.

  • @iliadnetfear2586

    @Jamie Owns that's the thing, nobody has the right to buy anything. You can be refused the sale of guns, you can be refused services of any kind, what can not be taken is the right to own it. Also, it's a misunderstanding among even gun-rights supporters that the right to own guns comes from the Constitution. This is not true. The way the second amendment is written, along with all the amendments, doesn't say that it is granted, it says it exists. The Constitution acknowledges that these rights exist, rather than give them. The reason for this is that a right given by government or document can be taken away by the same means.

    Weaponry had advanced past the musket. The puckle gun (patented in 1718) was a rapid fire weapon (in the right hands) that predates the Gatling gun. They had pepperbox pistols as early as 1790 and an array of different weaponry far more dangerous than a musket. And many Founding Fathers liked this sort of stuff. May I remind you that the cannon existed John.

    9:55 Alexander joins forces with James Madison and John Jay to write a series of essays defending the new United States Constitution, entitled The Federalist Papers. The plan was to write a total of twenty-five essays, the work divided evenly among the three men. In the end, they wrote eighty-five essays, in the span of six months. John Jay got sick after writing five. James Madison wrote twenty-nine. Hamilton wrote the other fifty-one!

    Duels weren't called duels back then. They were called affairs of honor, and we're very rarely actually taken to the battle field. Had Hamilton backed down from the duel, he could've been marked as inhonorable, and his career literally could've come to an end. Hamilton was actually an advocate for the end of duels after the death of his son, but backing down from a duel would've put the nail in his coffin (So did taking the duel, but that's not the point.) He could've said no to the duel, but then he would've been marked as cowardly, and his career would be over, and he probably thought they could both walk away with their lives.

    Really wishing this series had been made post-Hamilton because john could make ALL the references and we could all RISE UP and remember that Hamilton wrote THE OTHER 51 federalist papers and that Hamilton may have been the first one to die, but Burr's the one who paid for it. I hope you're satisfied. Also HISTORY QUESTION: did burr actually feel bad for shooting Hamilton or is that something Lin Manuel-Miranda took creative liberty on?

  • @rachelblack8097

    @rachelblack8097

    7 жыл бұрын

    Well he probably regretted it, if not for emotional reasons then for social and political reasons. His life was a complete wreck after he shot Alexander Hamilton. He went from being extremely wealthy to poor, had no further political future, was tried for treason after he tried to take over mexico and was accused of trying to plot the secession of the western states, his only child and only grandson both died (well, Theodosia disappeared). Alexander Hamiltons life is certainly remarkable, but I recommend you read up on Aaron burr and Theodosia burr Alston, his daughter (well if you've listened to Hamilton you know that lol) they were both so ahead of their time

  • @rachelblack8097

    @rachelblack8097

    SnickersFantasy that's definitely possible, but we have no way of knowing if Burr truly regretted it for emotional reasons--we can't go back in time or in his mind, sadly lol. And the political shunning led to social isolation that became very lonely.

  • @alexkay3448

    @alexkay3448

    There's evidence that he regretted it and evidence that he didn't. He definitely at least regretted it for political reasons. 'The World Was Wide Enough' comes from an actual Burr quote; 'Had I read Sterne more and Voltaire less, I should have known the world was wide enough for Hamilton and me.' However, his intentions here are murky. Due to the texts he's referring too, he's still slyly insulting Hamilton? The dude did a lot of crazy things after Hamilton's death and he really did lose everything. It's hard not to wonder if maybe he lost his mind a little too. Possibly even he couldn't give you a straight answer. (Who am I kidding, it's Burr, his answers were about as straight as John Laurens.) One interesting titbit is that after Hamilton's death, Burr was seen stroking the face of a statue of Hamilton and he said to it 'there was the poetry.'

  • @oaktree1807

    @oaktree1807

    Ariana Tolbert Aaron Burr did not regret shooting Hamilton emotionally. His regret was how it ruined his political career. In the Musical, we are looking at it through Aaron Burr's eyes during the song "The World Was Wide Enough" in a past tense. So, in the Musical it might seem emotional, but it was only because it impacted his life and reputation greatly. Fun Fact: Alexander Hamilton Jr. (Alexander Hamilton's second son) was the lawyer for Aaron Burr's second wife when she wanted a divorce from Burr.

    When he was talking about the constitution convention and the little characters were all there, all i could think about was Alexander Hamilton being the one doing the arm wave thing. That and singing "HAMILTON WROTE THE OTHER 51!!"

    @@victorglaviano Understanding history properly takes life experience. History is interesting to me but I wouldn't say I properly know it (I'm 18). At my age our focus is on figuring out what we want to do with our lives. Digging deep into something takes energy, and history is something that requires a lot of digging. At this point in our lives that energy is better spent elsewhere. By the time I'm in my 40s I'll probably know history too.

    @@mintbrownieangelfish-6114 you’ll be fine with this attitude! I learned history as a young kid because my dad was a WWII veteran and he would tell me stories and then the answer to his prayers came.... The history Channel was created or the Nazi channel as I call it affectionately because they're always showing WWII documentaries! So I had a solid base because of my dad! Stay hungry for knowledge and it'll take you far in life!

    I was an immigrant there for 17 years. I lived in Texas, Massachusetts, Washington(state), and New Hampshire. I did enjoy my time in the states, but in glad I don't live there anymore. There are many reasons I could argue for and against. But I think the most important thing you should learn about before movin is, what state you want to move to. They can be really different, so I'd recommend you read up on a few states. See what their governments are like, the cultural views and diversity. Before you commit to moving there.

    @@Samantha_yyz .... very true, depending upon your political and personal views. Each state is like a different country and some states like Louisiana, especially southern Louisiana is very European like some people even speak French, South Texas is similar in ways to Mexico and speak Spanish a lot. More specifically, regions are very different.... North, South, East and West. You'll here sometimes they South is very biggoted but for me I've found it's not true. I've found that ther northeast is the worst, people are rude, loud and unfriendly. The West, like LA, Portland and Seattle think they know more than everyone else. The South, depending upon where you are at are usually pretty friendly same as the middle of the country, the South has a lot of black people. But like anything, you have to find out for yourself.

    I never understood why Crash Course sometimes resorted to cheap referential humour (ie. that guy whose name I don't remember from the Jersey Shore popping up briefly upon the mention of New Jersey) until we watched this episode today in world history. I understand that most high schoolers aren't interested in history, but that pop culture stuff is what caught their attention. So I understand now. Thank you for making Crash Course enjoyable for everyone, not just the nerds who are unironically interested, but the apathetic kids as well to the extent that maybe they'll remember the lesson more than if it was read from a humourless textbook. No one but me laughed at the foreshadowing filter though and that I'll never understand.
