The Connection the Addict Craves | Jason Hyland | TEDxBostonCollege

Jason Hyland speaks about being a voice for the drug epidemic, showing what is possible even for people struggling currently or in early recovery. Being a former addict himself, Jason uses his personal experience to give a unique perspective of grit and self-empowerment.
Jason Hyland is a grateful recovering alcoholic and addict, who wrote his national bestselling book "Stop Thinking Like That: No Matter What" while in rehab winter of 2017-2018. In his 20+ months of sobriety, he has become a certified recovery coach and peer specialist working with group homes in the inner Boston neighborhoods, a motivational speaker, host of the NoMatterWhat podcast, a contributing blogger for Sober Nation, and a national addiction advocate. Hyland is a former minor league baseball player and College World Series MVP and is the founder of Motivational Recovery, which embodies his NoMatterWhat movement, with the mission to spread hope and inspiration to live out your best life no matter what. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

If only the 2 people i love more than anything could see the light like i did and this guy😢 I'm over 25 years clean and still feel the power and freedom of the day i never looked back and clawed my way back up and faced my demons head on. They'd live a happy drug free life if they faced the underlying issues. My oldest son and the love of my life are currently lost to addiction, depression and self doubt and I'm heartbroken that I cannot reach them. My soul hurts so much for them, they have no idea😢💔😔

Thank you so much for the kind words Wendy. Any opportunity I can get to help share the Motivational Recovery Mission of spreading hope & inspiration to the millions out there who are struggling whether it be with substances or mental health challenges, is a blessing. I am beyond grateful to have found my passion & purpose intertwined in one, and that is to be a Voice of hope, helping as many as possible!! Thank you for the support!

Me too ... I am finally in place where I can make real change. Although, offering help in the form of food or money, even a kind word, a smile can make a difference in someone's life who is dealing with addiction and homelessness. I have always longed to help find away to heal this global pandemic for good. Your story has inspired me to begin this journey. Thank you Jason. You are doing what so many won't. You are inspiring those of who are willing to actually start the their process of healing our brothers & sisters who need us to guild them out of their darkness and find their way home. You are a blessing to humanity is so many ways. 💗

@@toscahawkins713 Tosca, this is awesome to read! Thank you for the very sincere words, but more so hearing that you have also found a path of inspiration and helping others in need. If possible, I would love to hear more about your new journey since you began about a year back. You are so on point about how the littlest things can make the world of a difference to someone at that given moment. The things that we tend to take for granted, such as a simple "Hello!" or holding the door for someone can go a LONG way, as we never know what that person may be going thru. I am actually in the works of re-branding & re-birthing my "Motivational Recovery" movement, something I have wanted to do for a while, as it got pushed to the side due to CoVid. In my humbled opinion, 2024 is by far the most important year in American history, at the very least for us living here. And without question, as a country we are in urgent need of *strong*: minded, souls, willed individuals etc, as the last handful of years or so have crippled what seems like an entire generation, and then some, via the brainwashing of the evils that have been pushing a certain narrative to fit their specific agenda. Hard to really get into more than I already have, but thought I'd share since your comments relatively recent and geared toward HELPING others, which as you can probably tell, I am eager to get back into! Msg me on my IG if you wanna discuss further, maybe could help one another on our mission's. (@justcallmejayyy or the @MotivationalRecovery acct which I never shut down, thankfully, altho haven't used in years.) Wow, that was a novel, whoops! That just tells me one thing, I am certainly ready to get after it, and start spreading that hope & inspiration!🙌🇺🇸

Stigma helps to moderate behaviour post addiction, and would help many avoid addiction. A behaviour can be stigmatised without seeing the personas lesser.

Im here because a woman ive always cared about reached out to me. She struggles with addiction. The last time i seen her was over 20 years ago. She struggles with alcoholism. I seen her yesterday and we spent the night together. I held her in my arms all night real tight. She wants to repair herself and find a loving man to have a life with.. she told me and here i am falling with my gaurd up.. i want to trust her i want to love her but i am scared, it feels like my concious is screaming no but my heart says yes. Im so scared of losing her to her demons, and being in that life again. Idk what to do.

Prepare yourself to be bitterly disappointed. You can’t get emotionally invested and remain objective. Find her a sponsor and a support group. She can’t use you as a halfway house. If she resorts to anger or vitriol, you have to check yourself out of there.
