The Concrete Rules of Post-Tensioned Concrete

Choosing Post-Tensioned Concrete for your structural design allows for concrete to achieve greater slab spans that are more efficient than a Reinforced concrete structure. This is due to Post-Tensioning places precompression forces into concrete and concrete is stronger under compression than tension.
This video covers some of the rules to follow in any post-tensioned structural design to allow you to achieve the most efficient reinforced concrete structure design.

    I've had to deal with a PT slab at least twice. In both cases it was a remodelling job of an existing building from the 1970's. Cutting openings in PT slabs can be dangerous as a cut tendon can work like a whip. Problem is that not any builder can do this, in one case the original firm that installed them did the modifications, in other case we just put warnings on the drawing to avoid people from cutting in the slab willy nilly, however in that building no openings had to be made.

  • @BrendanHasty

    Hi Dyko, this is why the pt ducts should be grouted. Also always truncate tendons prior to cutting, truncation is relatively straightforward. Thanks for the support.

    i'm currently involved in a project doing exactly this. Consider advising the client to hire experienced demolition contractors who know how to do proper tendon locking (temporary and permanent) also very important to obtain shop drawings as it'll help a lot. Current project doesn't have and therefore we had to conduct tendon scanning and strip hacking to ensure exact tendon locations. We were very fortunate that the tendons were bonded

  • @dykodesigns

    @dykodesigns

    @@albertfoo1569 In the two projects I hade to make the drawings for, the tendons where not bonded. They where only anchored at the ends, making them potentially very hazardous if you cut openings in the floor. In the Netherlands the market for PT slabs is quite niche, there’s only one company installing them. PT slabs where popular here in the 1970’s, but grew out of favour as nowerdays mostly precast, prestressed hollow core floors are beeing used. PT technology was also used for terraced houses built in the 70’s (with in-situ concrete tunnel frame), but with time problems started to develop with corrosion on the midpoint anchors.

    @@BrendanHasty not many experienced installers available. But concrete and rebar costs have helped to push design towards PT. Also reduced slab thickness can decrease overall building height, increasing savings throughout the build. Very much cost driven as mentioned above.

    Hambro structural building system sitting on a post-tensioned podium deck" can you explain this in simple ese? this is the ne bldg I'm moving to. I want to know how good this deadens sound acoustically and sound proofs? is this thick material how thick? I read Hambro has a 57 rating on flat slab is it? But the db protection can go past 63 if something is added to it? tell me in laymen's terms how good or bad this process is so I won't hear up stairs downstairs, outside, even hall way.
