The Concerning Future of Watch Price Increases...

Ойын-сауық

A Discussion around Increasing Watch Prices, Retail Prices, Competition between Brands. The past few years has shown a massive climb in watch interest but equally, as speculators got less and less involved in the watch space, so there has been a decline in interest. Watch brands on the other hand have continued to increase the prices of their pieces and it is reaching a stage where we have a difficult time justifying spending such prices at retail. What is the future of watches if this continues?

The beauty of this Retail scenario is it's forcing us to look down different avenues for pieces where amazing bargains can be found. Now is the time to look for Discounts, to chase the outliers and pieces that are a few years old. Happy hunting!🥃

Indeed. A couple of weeks ago I managed to buy New the SEIKO Spb255j the night diver MM 200, limited edition, for what that's worth for a 50% discount from an authorised dealer. No alignment issues and the 6r35 runs at about +3secs per day. Retail was £1080.

In 12-24 months, discounts are likely to be even greater on many models. What will AD’s do with unsold 17k carbon Panerais? These and many, many more will end up on the secondary market for half the price. The Swiss watch industry is nearing the precipice of a deep recession largely of their own making. The day of the enthusiast will return.

You can complain about prices all you like, but complaining about the market and Adam's Smith's "invisible hand" is very much like "old man yells at cloud". Basically if prices are high, then there are people richer than you who are buying them at those prices and stores are clearing their inventory. This will happen to all brands that rich folk who want status will go for - Rolex, Omega, Patek, even Tudor. You just have to accept this new reality. Think of the 5 stages of grief - denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Maybe you are angry about it. Maybe you are at the "bargaining" stage telling yourself "if only I bought that Rolex (something) in 2015 when I had the chance", or maybe you are depressed about it all and just need to talk to us Internet folk for some copium. But I say - move onto acceptance. Accept that it is what it is and there's no going back. The best way to accept it is to look at the microbands. I moved on my former big boys toys of Omega, Rolex, Breitling, Tudor and JLC. All my watches now are from exciting microbrands, a few cool pieces from San Martin, and an old-school SKX007. And you know what? I couldn't be happier. Especially now I don't have to keep any pieces in a safety deposit. Fancy that - I actually get to keep the watches I love at home with me?! CRAZY!!

As others have said, JLC and IWC are the main culprits. They’ve timed massive price increases right in line with a significant drop off of interest in luxury watches. As a result, I think their sales will suffer. This was confirmed to me by a Sales Associate at an AD, who told me that interest in JLCs has really cooled and she cannot sell many of them. These price increases will undoubtedly drive many of us away from retail purchases, and towards the secondary market and other brands. Brands like Longines, Oris and micros could be the winner here.

I think the simple fact is that as working class people these brands don't want our money any more. They don't need it. They are happy to sell fewer units at much higher margins to exclusive clients and make higher profits that way. I’ve also been in the process of purchasing an Omega watch with the salesperson telling me that if I don’t buy it now it will increase by 5% approx in the next few weeks. All the brands do it its standard practice. What concerns me is they can have a watch built in say 2022, sit there in the window for 2 years, each year having the 5% pay rise added to its rrp. So Joe Bloggs comes along thinking he is buying a brand new watch straight out of the factory when in reality he is buying a 2 year old watch at 10% more price. Also hype comes into it a lot. I am so glad that I bought the more expensive of my watches to round out my collection (and most were preowned in excellent condition) two years ago, and also purchased my new Omega Speedmaster Professional at that time before the price increase. I think my collection of desired watches is quite complete now where I can hold off on any new purchases for now. Traditionally, when prices go up they don’t go down again. Even Longines, my favorite watch brand, that has a good value for price has raised their prices.

I got the explorer 2 bc I thought it would hold up better and was a better everyday watch since I have a new seamaster smp. Well now I want that yachty with rhodium dial and something keeps talking me out of it every time I get ready to submit. It would really suck if I got it and watches went down in price. This is a great video and one that I hope is seen among the various big brands in Switzerland. I was driven away from the big brands years ago. I couldn’t justify owning a watch that was three or four months or even a half year’s wage (before taxes) when I could own a watch that kept reasonable time and cost less than 10% of a month’s wage. I turned instead to small micro brands and to vintage/used watches. Sure, there will be strange annoyances every once in a while, there will be trips to the horologists to get service, but adding it all up, I think the hunt for older pieces and/or the exploration of new companies dedicated to their craft and committed to their customers pushes the balance in their favor. None of my watches contain even a little bit of “cache,” but they are fun, they keep reasonable time and they haven’t cost an arm and a leg. These methods have allowed me to explore the history of watches while still remaining sane (more or less).

The market for run of the mill analogue watches is disappearing exponentially. Brands percieved as being 'prestigious' will survive with higher prices and less watches produced. Alongside Omega, Seiko is probably another huge offender on this issue and their recent aggressive hikes has removed one of the pathways that people tended to enter into this arena. Most frustrating part is that while I can understand their price increases (hey, it's a business!), it has not come with the requisite improvements in quality and so I'm annoyed that the level of disrespect toward the customer. Quite frankly this cycle of availability and pricing issues from the past few years has really drained this hobby of a lot of its joy. I know you don't have to own something to enjoy it, but I would've at least liked to have had the option to at a reasonable cost. Now that these two issues are still present, the potential pool of watches to try how has diminished materially.

And for Rolex to raise to the skies like a helium balloon? How the hell does a brand like JLC survive when they have price hiked their wares so high with the value retention dropping like a stone? At some stage the glass ceilings for steel watches must be found. Then will the manufacturers have to rely on discounting by 20-40% to actually sell the buggers?

It leaves a bad taste in my mouth with how they refuse to provide parts to watchmakers in an attempt to force you to service with Swatch directly for a premium price and extended wait time. This is really interesting. Having collected over many years modestly affordable Hamilton, Seiko, Tissot etc, to my surprise I seem to have largely lost interest after extending to a BB58. Every thing after that seems to cost disportionately more for what appears me only incremental gains in style, quality and innovation. An Omega Aqua Terra to example is nice looking, better quality than the BB58 but is the price difference really justified?

I've been irritated by the entire watch world (major brands, secondary market, youtube, blogs, and influencers) for at least 2-3 years. Yes I have bought a couple Tudors in the timeframe and several micro-brands. But I have continually stayed away from luxury brands because I believe that they drank the Kool-Aid and believe they are better and more refined than they really are. Do I really need a dive watch that is also a dress watch? Do I need 80-120 hours of power reserve and have to pony up double for the privilege. No and no. I've had my share of Rolex and Omegas (most have been sold on at no profit). Maybe in the future I might find myself returning and seriously look at buying one of these watches (Zenith or Breguet chronograph) but in the mean time I'm sitting back and getting a good laugh at the whole watch market, just like I did during the housing bubble speculation before 2008. I waited and bought my house at 63% off!

After nine months of coming back to watches after 25 years, I'm burned out. I bought several this year and I finally bought a high-spec quartz which is my daily.

The only problem is where to buy secondhand…grey market dealers aren’t trustworthy, watch box/watchfinder gives you a bad deal and private…there’s no way to tell how that owner treated the watch or what he has done to it hence selling the watch

The problem is price hikes the brands can‘t reverse them as it would defy the definition of luxury. Will be interesting to see what happens at some point when sales start to dwindle and pressure from lower priced brands mounts.

Suspect we will get back to where the Sales Exec offers you 10-15% discount at the point of sale

Great analysis. Consumers between 2020-2022 got caught up in a fever. And rather than thinking long term and seeing through it, manufacturers got caught up in the fever as well, raising prices beyond reason. At the end of the day everyone is human, but you think that the professionals would have a clearer perspective on current and future market dynamics than they've proven to actually have. Rolex will be okay. But Omega and many others will suffer. Tudor is poised to capture a lot of market share in their now evacuated price segment.

You hit the nail on the head and I think the Rolex price hike was the straw so to speak. I am an avid collection and with the newest Rolex price hikes I am less inclined to buy as many as I did before. It has put a damper on my view of the industry and now I have come to realize that instead of celebrating horology these brands are just out to make money. I will wait for discounts to occur or just hyper focus what I want to buy. But yes now it has become prohibitively expensive because everyone should be able to enjoy these watches,

Agree with everythign you've said in this video. The escalating prices and grey market interference in this hobby of ours has really spoilt everything. For me, my obsession with horology has become a real Jekyll and Hyde experience over the last couple of years. I absolutely love the marriage of design, technology and history; and I love listening to fellow enthusiasts, such as yourself relaying your thoughts and experiences. But the ever escalating prices are killing it for me. Add to this a particularly unpleasant experience in a Rolex Ad last year by a rude, snobbish Manager (where I've already bought two pieces over the last three years!!) and I'm more than a bit disheartened. Part of me wants to sell all my pieces and start a new passion/hobby - maybe go back to cars. But I can't help being drawn back in when I walk past a local pre-owned dealer, or enjoy a nice vid from a fellow KZread enthusiast over a whisky. Time will tell I suppose (excuse the dad-pun)...

This is the third time in 25 years this cycle has happened in watches. 2 things always remain: the harsh reality of markets/economics and people. There was a lot of the market fallacy of "this time is different" on the way up.. people say this every time. BTW it's never different. Unless something crazy happens the current watch correction is looking more like 2001 vs 2009. The watch market is returning to a more stable state last seen in 2012-2016. The price hikes are likely over but also because money printer go burrrr over the last 3 years these increases are endemic to the amount of paper in the world now.

People had too much money during Covid >> Brands sold too much >> Brands increase prices >> People stop selling... we will probably see price freezes for a while with low demand, etc.
