    My favorite thing about The Computer Chronicles is that it documents the computer revolution so well. It starts in the early 80s when mini computers were still larger than desks, and here we are in 1999 with 3D graphics. It's amazing seeing that evolution in such great detail.

    Yeah 1999 was definitely one of the absolute peak years for PC Gaming. Jagged Alliance 2, Heroes of Might & Magic 3, Unreal Tournament, Thief, System Shock 2, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Planescape Torment, Freespace, Homeworld, Quake 3, NHL 2000, Dungeon Keeper 2, Outcast, Re-Volt, Worms Armageddon, Midtown Madness, NFS High Stakes, you can just go on and on. Absolutely amazing.

    They’d hate it. Baldur’s Gate was fun, proper, real-time combat… Baldur’s Gate 3 goes back to “okay I hit you, okay now it’s your turn you hit me… okay now wait a moment and stand still while I hit you” and became the laughing stock of 2023 for anyone who had played a game in the past two decades… even Final Fantasy moved on from turn based combat to real-time… there’s a reason for that. Because it’s not a bunch of nerds sitting around a table in their parents basement playing dungeons and dragons on a piece of paper, it’s a video game that can actually represent real combat as it would have been, but instead is a laughable joke.

    @@davejay6855nah we would have liked it then. You have to remember that hardcore roleplaying fans still enjoyed turn based combat in those days; Jagged Alliance, Wizardry, and of course Final Fantasy were all using turn based systems in the late 90s and early 2000s. Action fans might’ve been harder to convert though. And that’s not even mentioning the obvious wow factor of seeing graphics tech of the 2020s more than two decades before. And fully voiced characters with hundreds of hours worth of dialogue. It would’ve been revolutionary simply on account of its presentation.

    They were talking about the PS2 unveiling at the Tokyo game show in September 1999 which was 6 months before it launched in Japan so some things weren't finalized, like how they called it Gran Turismo 2000, so Sony might have said the PS2 was going to come bundled with a modem but I actually think the reporter did get it wrong and that Sony really said it will have the ability to have a modem added to it via the expansion slot/bay. It was a Japanese show so maybe whoever translated it got it wrong or something because I actually looked it up and other reports I saw from the time said it would not come with a modem.

  • @ShadowAngel1860

    @ShadowAngel1860

    8 ай бұрын

    Where were the innovations? The only thing might be the VGA support but that was such a niche thing it's no wonder only one other system ever supported that. Otherwise? Crappiest first party controller of all time, with a distinct lack of buttons. The VMU was just a copy of the Pocket Station. In most games the display is completely useless and even in the few games its use, it's use is more a unneeded novelty than anything else. 4 Controller Ports? Atari 2600, Bally Astrocade, that was actually the norm in the 70's already before Nintendo standardized 2 ports out of greed. Online gaming? Was already a thing on the Mega Drive and SNES, especially in Japan and by the Dreamcast rolled in the standard in PC Gaming. What else is there? Actually not much. Complete lack of third party support, a pretty mediocre library because of that and also the fact that most games are just half-assed arcade ports. If anything, it was completely outdated the second Sony announced the PS2 to be DVD compatible. Sega completely dropped the ball there (like usual, which is sad, as i grew up with their consoles from the Master System onwards)

    This is their best episode bar none. I remember the 6th generation so well as it was the biggest improvement in gaming history that we had ever witnessed. That stood long after the 6th generation and has only recently been surpassed by the 9th. The 6th generation of gaming meant so much to me. It was the first time I was out on my own and could get whatever game/console I wanted starting with the Sega Dreamcast on 9/9/99. That next year I was lucky enough to snag a launch PS2. I did it again when the Xbox launched with Halo. The GameCube I waited awhile for but I got it within the first year. To this day I remain an early adopter of all things gaming. I got both our (fiancee and I) Xbox Series X and PS5 at launch...

    Dreamcast made the ps1 and n64 look pitiful in this show, almost hard to believe they were on the market at the same time.

    On the Dreamcast: “And the OS? Windows CE from Microsoft” - Well, nope. It supports a subset of Windows CE APIs for rapid software development. But it’s not a very good API for games.

    The game cam theory at the time was great, but execution was a joke and still is kind of a joke today with Kinect....and the dude’s new geo pocket game pick of the week went absolutely nowhere.

    It's sad that today computer gaming means crappy console ports or stupid indie games. In these days we had independent software COMPANIES like Edmark/BroderBund. Do those names ring a bell anyone? Or were you all in diapers in those days? Schools took too long getting into computers and only treated them casually as reward time instead of seeing their true potential. Dad got me into education on the Commodore 64 believe it or not. There were some interesting software titles like Wiz Math/Type series.

    I was born in the mid 80's in the US, and we frequently used computers in the labs/classrooms etc. with a fairly wide variety of educational and productivity software. There were a few games (though even most games available were educational in nature) that you could play at recess etc, but the primary usage was educational. This was at a small town public school.
