The Complete History of Tandem Drafting

Tandem Drafting was a weird and unique blip on the evolution of NASCAR. Some fans remember it fondly, others hate it with all of their guts. So, today we will go back in time and see the complete history of the tandem draft.

It's really weird, I remember as a kid watching a Talladega race, and watched two cars hop up on the outside and rocket to the lead, and I always wondered why more drivers didn't do that more often. My memory may be shot, but I remember a driver giving an interview about two-car rockets and he said something about water temperatures spiking when they hooked together.

Yep, that's how the altered the 2012 package as well to reduce it's strength, by moving the air intake on the nose so it would be blocked harsher and the temps would rise faster. It didn't really kill it though, Kyle Busch still won the Bud Shootout that year by abusing it, and Brad K won the spring Dega race by virtue of Kyle pushing him until Kyle's car nearly blew up. It just murdered the effectiveness of it over a long period of time, making it practical only for the drivers who were already leading.

I wish they could bring back the tandem draft. It was more skill based then the current follow the leader single file stuff that is called racing nowadays. If you didn't pull your car out in time it could overheat and explode. So the tandem buddies had to keep swapping spots. It also made for so many lead changes, like the 2010 talladega races which had a combined 175 lead changes. And it added a level of unpredictability to the racing, like when bayne and ragan both won at daytona in 2011.

I'm one of the few that actually really liked it and feel we should go back to it, it provided some great racing and some great finishes when it was around, there was always excitement and drivers could pass every second, cause that's how plate racing is there is a new leader normally every lap when it came to this you couldn't hold onto the lead for more than a lap or two at a time. Better then watching a very long line of cars against a very small line on the inside or outside, just not fun to watch unless your drivers leading the race. But I enjoyed tandom drafting and wish it stayed around longer, really made for some memorable moments

  • @FallingPicturesProductions

I was one of the few who were a big fan of Tandem Drafting when it was around. It enabled the packs to be broken up, reducing the frequency and size of the Big Ones (Neither Talladega race in 2011 had a real big one for this reason, and the July Daytona event was only caused because of restart shenanigans). Timing and teamwork being used was also something I feel the sport could really take advantage of, as few other racing series could see two competitors have to put that much blind trust in eachother before knowing when to swap or stab eachother in the back.

I like the package know where you race in a pack for most of the time, but at some points, you might see a tandem draft come shooting out of nowhere into the lead, but you have to have a fine line between completely tandem drafting, and completely pack racing, which I think NASCAR has done a great job with. They allow tandem drafting, but drivers can't tandem draft all the way around the track for every lap because the temps will run high.

The best happy medium was when tandems could last a straightaway or about a lap. It allowed drivers to go from 10th-12th to the lead and completely change the dynamic of the race at any moment. It also allowed drivers the opportunity to pass the field if it became single file like we've seen since about 2006 at Talladega.

What people call tandem racing, I disagree with their definition, even if it wasn't the common one. 2009-2010 was push drafting where they would push half a lap, grab the lead and break up and they stayed in a pack. That's when the lead change records were set at Dega... In the push draft era. It wasn't but the last 2 laps or so where guys would hook up with however they were around and just go for it. Guys that figured out out first would get out and you'd have a sling shot battle. Then 2011 IMO and in my definition was the only year of tandem racing where they ran like that the entire race, and had team orders of who to work with. Cars would be all spread out not racing just wasting laps. Then when it came to race, if it stayed green you'd have multiple pods racing so the pusher automatically gave away his chance to win the race. Off a restart you had a chance of pushing someone out far enough you could sling shot for the win. It was garbage. 2012 they could still hook up but not all the time and it was more like the pain draft era, except the runs were smaller, and made packs tighter. It was better to watch than tandem. Then you have 2013-2018 where they just had a terrible package that you couldn't get runs and race with that lead to line rides and all the Gen Zs to say I want tandem back. While Gen X and old Millennials knew there was a better form of pack racing to be had where a driver can more one on one determine his fate of getting to the front by being fast, making good moves, and forcing guys into helping you with cars that got runs that lead to passing. That's what we were raised on. The 2019 Superspeedway package has brought some of that back with better runs and stability. Now it's up to drivers to learn to not throw stupid blocks and cause 5 big wrecks a race (just 1) and to tweak out the package. If we end up with something that looks closer to 2009-2010 or 2012 push drafting, I'm game... But 2011 tandem racing, that needs to stay dead.

I never understood why fans hated tandem drafting. I loved it! I was tired of the parade of cars just driving around the track, with very little passing, and often devolving into a single-line conveyor belt. Tandem drafting was exciting, created the passing opportunities pack racing lacked, and made for some of the best finishes I've seen. I can completely understand why drivers didn't like it, but IMO I'd rather have tandem drafting back than the borefest superspeedways currently are. I don't even watch Daytona and Talladega anymore. This year was the first Daytona 500 I've missed in two decades. It's just not exciting racing. The only "exciting" parts are the crashes, and that's not a good focus to have!

  • @Borchert97
    @Borchert974 жыл бұрын

No tandem in 2013 had nothing to do with bumpers not lining up, and we still saw hints of it such as when Ragan and Gilliland got the 1-2 at Talladega. It was because increasingly lower spoilers packed air in behind the cars and created an air bubble that was EXTREMELY hard for the cars to break through to lock bumpers, the reason the new 2019 package can do the tandem is because the absolute monstrosity of a spoiler pokes a larger hole in the air and decreases the air bubble effect.

Loved tandem. If was actual racing. Basically instead of one car vs one car, it was 2v2. Just created a lot of action. People hate it because they dont like anything new and prefer to see wrecks of 15+ cars from pack racing.

I loved tandem drafting. Lots of lead changes. Also, I was a Mark Martin fan and he always got caught in the Big One. So, I felt like the tandem draft was a safer alternative that actually gave drivers more control of their destiny at plate tracks.

The Tandem Draft was a game changer. From a sponsor’s perspective, you can pay money to get Sunday Prime Time sponsorship for cheaper on a crummy car 4 times a year, knowing that all it would take is a strong car to push your guy to the front. I think back to Harvick saying, “I’m gonna have nightmares about ‘Kids Eating Free,’” when he was pushing Dave Blaney. Golden Corral and Tommy Baldwin Racing got a lot of TV time that day. Odd bedfellows was great for the sport and plate racing. People didn’t understand how good they had it until it was gone. As for the drivers, yeah, it would definitely suck walking on eggshells for that whole race, knowing that if you picked a shitty dance partner with 10 to go that you’d be toast. I think the tandem will come back in bursts like we saw with Bowyer and Keselowski intermittently last season. I think once the drivers figure out the closing rate on these cars that this will turn out to be the best Super Speedway package to date.

I think the two car tandem really can really root itself to the raised flat front ends that appeared at the start of the 2005 season at the super speedway tracks. The last iterations of the twisted sister body were extremely different at super speedways compared to the other oval tracks.

One thing that I do miss was that at Talladega in 2011, the drivers had a dial in their cars so they could talk to each other while they raced and talk about who they were going to hook up with. To my knowledge, that's the only time in NASCAR history that drivers could talk to each other during a race

I'm not a big fan of it, but I can't deny that it has produced quite a few good moments in the short time it was around. It's also pretty iconic for me, it's usually the first thing that comes to mind whenever I think about the COT and superspeedway racing in the late 00's/early 10's

Denny is one that really discovered the tandem. To me, tandem racing was what they did in 2011 and it sucked. If you are 100% reliant on someone else, and if someone has to give up their chance to win, as you'd see multiple pods in the picture once it was figured out. 2010 and 2012 style where they were in packs but could still hook up and make big runs was good to watch. The Xfinity races in 12 and 13 when they were allowed to hook up but remained in packs were especially exciting. And it wasn't all a team orchestration, and being in the pack you just had to hook up with who you could; and not have this teams racing nonsense. The current Cup package still needs a tweak or 2, but I think it has the juice to provide great racing except for the team order bull bleep. So when I say tandem racing I exclusively mean 2011, and tandem racing sucked.

Most fun I've ever had watching races. I've been saying it for years that they should bring it back. The only reason cars where flipping was because of the big spoilers on the C.O.T. when they where turned around backwards.

Bring back the wicker on the roof from 2000 to 2003. it made the cars punch a massive hole and created a huge suck up effect and made the drivers have to make quick and daring moves. It was super intense and only the best survived.

It was better and safer then standard pack racing. Safer in terms of injuries. The Carl Edwards crash was cause by the COT wings not the tandom draft. Less big one's and overal closer finishes. More strategy and less stalemates on passing. You had to make friends. Decide if you'll pit with said friend or screw over your partner for plausible track positions. It was intense and fun to watch. This is coming from someone very critical on post chase NASCAR. Bringing it back will definitely make me more inclined to watching.

I really liked the tandem because it was racing to determine who was the best. It reminded me of the 70s and 80s before restrictor plates. But most fans did not like it because it got rid of the big crashes caused by pack racing, where survival is based on luck.

I'm kinda mixed on tandem drafting. I like the passing and lots of lead changes, but I'm not really in favor of helping someone else win the race. The tandem drafting definitely needs to be allowed again in the Xfinity Series and Truck Series, though. Say what you wanna, but I think that made Superspeedway racing really fun to watch.

I liked the tandems. Mostly because it enabled us to see the most random driver pairings each time. For example, Bobby Labonte pushing Trevor Bayne to the win in the 2011 Daytona 500.

Even though I prefer pack racing, I honestly don't have a problem with tandem drafting. I also think that the rule against it in the Xfinity Series should be lifted since NASCAR doesn't seem to be able to enforce it consistently. On a side note, I watched the first Busch Clash (1979) over the weekend. Apparently, there was something similar to the two-car tandem back then too. Even though the bumpers weren't locked, when Baker and Waltrip got into a two-car draft, they pulled away from the field. The same thing also happened in the 500 with Donnie Allison and Cale Yarborough. I also remember seeing this happen in the early days of plate racing, but I don't remember which race it was (probably a race from '88).

Just make the fences stronger and higher, go for tandem drafting. It takes skill, it takes some interesting politicking between teams (wouldn't want to bump the one battling you for points, but then you might want to bump draft someone to the victory one race and have them do the same to you, to bring you both up into contention for the series).

The tandem draft was killed when Jeff Gordon was the odd man out at Talladega. At least w/ the tandem draft there is passing. Pack racing has hardly ANY passes or passes for the lead and blocking is awful!

The family and I went to the 500, including the duels, truck and Busch races (I still call it the Busch series for sheer simplicity, too many sponsorship changes) from 06-12. It was incredible to see the evolution of the old classic pack racing, especially in 2006 when Johnson won as it misted the whole race, where the cars would spread out during a green flag run. When the COT debuted in 08, the races were enjoyable but the pack just wasn’t quite ever complete until the final few laps or so. The 2011 500 was the most boring, because the tandem racing seemed to pull all of the anticipation of pack racing out of everyone there. It was cool to see how those finished came together at the end when three or four tandems all converged at the checkered. We’re planning on one final farewell trip this coming year, and I hope to see that modern, powerful pack blow past. The 2007 finish was the best I’ve ever seen, and TV did JPM’s jet dryer crash NO justice. I was scared the whole track would catch fire and burn. Weirdest night ever but good memories. But NO tandem drafting SUCKED!

You failed to mention that the Nationwide Series cars kept with the Tandem drafting for a few more years before NASCAR banned pushing which is another Super Speedway controversy all in itself.
