The COMPANY that won the EUROPEAN CUP!!!

Спорт

PSV Eindhoven are one of the most well known and successful football clubs in Europe. They've won the European Cup and Eredivisie, they've had legends like Ronaldo, Romario and Arjen Robben play for them.
BUT, they began as a works team in the city of Eindhoven for the employees of Philips.
In this video I visited the Philips Stadion (the PSV stadium tour), the Philips museum and the city of Eindhoven to learn more about PSV.

Frits Philips, what a bloke - took the ceremonial kick-off aged 5, saved 382 Jews during the Second World War after himself spending several months held at a concentration camp (very Schindler-esque, convincing the Nazis they were all indispensable workers at his factory), successful chairman of one of the world's most prominent businesses, married for 63 years (why not mention that, it's impressive), and to cap it off, made his swansong at exactly 100 and left for pastures new. I'd never heard of him until tonight, but my god, what a life. 😀

5:41 Bayer Leverkusen has a similar relation with the Bayer AG corporation. The city Leverkusen, a fusion of several village to become one city, was even named after Carl Leverkus , the founder of a dye factory, that ultimately would become the Bayer Corporations. Though not popular in Germany for its Corporation link, and abroad for Bayer's dodgy role in the WW2, the relation between city, corporation and club goes a century . Fun fact : in 1988 when the Philips Sport Vereniging won the Europe Cup 1 (CL) , Bayer Leverkusen 'Werkself' won the UEFA Cup (= now Europa League). Their only international trophy, as after that they would remain Vice-Kusen !

This might be a bit of an alien concept to the British but Philips was a company that actually cared about it's employees. It was about continuity and progress rather than profit maximalization. It took good care of it's employees in every sense and at least until they early 2000's there were students who got a few hundred euro extra from Philips because it had saved money for study allowance for all of it's employees children. Philips also got a lot of it's employees early on from the piss poor 'peat colonies' in the North of the Netherlands, an terribly empoverished part where extremely poor people lived in mud huts, low literacy, poor health, all the bad stuff. This was not just because they were willing to move for a (very) decent factory job, but also to elevate these people, with the next generations in mind. Just like there was a lot of socail housing build elsewhere in the country with private money to house and elevate the working class, he did that as an employer. Progress as a company and as a society at the same time. Sports and exercise were also part of that, also that was done by private not for profit associations. Just for the fun and non monetary benefits of it. Professional football was never self-evident in the Netherlands, the not for profit private initiative was held in high regard and there was a lot of resistance against football becoming professional in the 50's for reasons of the integrity of the game. I've always enjoyed professional football but in hindsight, they got a point. So both form the background of the PSV football club, which was just one of Philips sportsclubs, and is in no way comparable to corporate take overs. For it's first 40 years they had to perform by being more organized as a club and training better, the company money might have bought the club nice dressing rooms, it didn't give a competitive edge in the amateur sport. I also think you don't realize how huge Philips was. First in lighting, hence the special attention for the stadium lights, and later in consumer electronics. It was a global giant, probably the biggest together with Sony. Very innovative, Philips invented the audio cassette and the CD player for example, and of course used PSV for brand exposure. It was the richest club of the Netherlands in the 80's, even luring players from Ajax with HiFi sets (they made some top ones). The international connections of the Philips company also helped with getting future legends like Romario and Ronaldo to Eindhoven, of all places. I'm an Ajax fan and don't really love PSV, but I love that it's rooted in optimism, progress and not for profit cooperation.

Irish PSV fan sinds 1988, forget premier league, forget all these high paid prima donnas. Forever PSV. Great vid. Love it, I love visiting, the locals are great, great city, I want to go back soon. If im not mistaken, Fritz Philips didnt sit in a corporate box, and sat with the regular fans, and his seat is now retired? But It was pre covid last time I was there, id need a regular to clarify. You need to get to PSV V Ajax, the best games I have ever attended in any sport, pure passion. The Cruyff shall is the Eredivisie v KNVB Beker winner season opener, much like the Charity Shield. I love the centenary badge, they should have kept the laurels but, hey. Interesting about the "company team" when Philips stoped as jersey sponsor in 2016 alot of fans were gutted, including myself, as Ive every home jersey since 92, Its difficult to articulate but the Philips wasn't screen printed or stuck to the jersey 2004 but actually the black Philips lettering was as much part of the fabric of the jersey as the Rood-Witten stripes, it was quite unique. One of my fave youtube vids ever. I love this club.

Said it was the best craic he had in his life, so it became a thing, been at any amount of much stronger clubs games but Eindhoven feels so familiar now. Especially in the mid to late 90s when Ireland was in the grip of Man United hegemony, it was cool to have a different jersey.

Great content! a few remarks: 1. All the homes next to the stadium were indeed part of what is called ‘Philipsdorp’ meaning ‘Philips Town’. Philips lured employees from the East and south of the Netherlands to seinschoten by offering them housing. 2. PSV was established by Philips to offer employees a sports facility. Meaning at the start PSV only existed of Philips employees 3. If you are more into economics/business and politics, Philips has had some spin off companies including ASML. ASML is today to Eindhoven what Philips was before. The fascinating thing about ASML is that it is literally one of the most important companies in the world. It even became the USA’s main means of sanctioning/restraining China for further economic development as ASMLs chipmachines are unmatched and competitors are behind by at least 10 years!

Thank you for doing a video on my club, Sam! Yes, we Eindhoveners are very proud of our football club, which indeed started out as a company team but eventually became independent. Philips is still one of the main sponsors though. In the Brainport style (Brainport being the nickname of our region) we have a unique shirt sponsor nowadays: instead of just one company the whole region is on the shirt now, the main companies like Philips, ASML, VDL and Swinkels Family Brewers (the company behind Bavaria beer) each sponsoring for several millions. Did you know Philips is still prominent on the shirt, featuring a seperate badge saying "Proud founders"? O, by the way... PSV is the second most succesful club in the Netherlands having won 24 league titles, 10 FA Cups, 13 Supercups, 1 UEFA Cup and 1 European Cup. It's a massive club in our country and in Belgium as well! 🙂 Also, the Philips Stadium is unique as it is right in the heart of the city centre instead of on a indstrial estate outside the city like so many clubs have nowadays.

Great video, and I love to see my club getting some love online. I did miss a mention of Mister PSV: Willy van der Kuijlen. With 306 Eredivisie goals Willy is not only PSV's all-time topscorer, but also leading Eredivisie goalscorer by about 50 goals. For PSV, he's almost 200 goals ahead of Coen Dillen (119) and Luc Nilis (110) (Luuk de Jong currently has 106 PSV Eredivisie goals, and will probably take 2d or 3d soon). Nobody is likely to ever reach Van der Kuijlens Eredivisie tally, since even when he played in the seventies it was rare for top talent to remain in The Netherlands. Even the greatest recent Eredivisie strikers like Ruud van Nistelrooij, Dirk Kuyt or Robin van Persie barely got half-way to 300. In my opinion, Willy van der Kuijlen is the best footballer many foreigners never heard about. His international career was limited to friendlies and qualification matches, mostly due to a feud between PSV players (vd Kuijlen, van Beveren) and Ajax players (Cruijff, Neeskens). This feud might have cost our nation dearly, since a team with all these players might have been unbeatable. He was however part of that PSV side that won the Uefa Cup in 77/78, and remains beloved by fans to this day. Willy passed away in 2021 as Mister PSV, and the Eredivisie leading goalscorer trophy is now named after him.

Never won the national championship though: Bayer Leverkusen, founded in 1904 as a company team of the Bayer Chemical Works. Because they only got promotion to the Bundesliga in 1979, some people think it's a relatively new club but it actually isn't.

I think the main difference between clubs like PSV and the hated RB Leipzig is that these clubs are founded by the company to provide their workers with leisure time. They are at the basis of the football club and go all the way back to the origin of the club. I think a lot of these clubs exist, but for many of them the original company might not exist anymore or aren't directly linked to the club anymore. Whereas Red Bull simply bought already existing clubs and rebranded them, similarly to how you can buy the rights of a big American sports team and relocate and rebrand it. There's no history with the Red Bull company, which is what really is why it is hated more. In about 100 years this might have changed and people will look at RB Leipzig the same way as teams like PSV are looked at.

Very nice video again. I think the comparison between PSV and Red Bull Salzburg etc. is not the best one. PSV was a factory team (for the workers of Philips) in the first years and people from outside of the company were allowed to join from 1928 (95 years already). So Philips was not like Red Bull a company that took over a football club or something like that. The actual start of PSV is in 1910 in my opinion as the Philips Elftal (Eleven) was formed on the 10th of December 1910. One of the reasons why this team had to stop (that's the real story) is that several of the members were sacked by Philips because of strikes organized by some of them. Strikes were often started by Socialists and Communists and the interesting thing is that Lion Philips (the grandfather of Gerard and Anton Philips, the co-founders of the Philips company) was a nephew of Karl Marx and was in close contact with him and in fact contributed money to Karl Marx several times. In that sense the Philips family had an important role in the survival of Karl Marx and the start of Communism. Maybe it's also one of the reasons why Anton Philips and Frits Philips are considered people who did business in a social way and taking good care of many of their workers. They were Capitalists but had a social heart and it seems they really cared for their workers and for PSV. Another side note: PSV's main rival is Ajax. Ajax is considered a 'Jewish club' by some but in fact Lion Philips was born Jewish (later he changed his religion to become member of the Reformed Dutch Church) and Frits Philips was recognized by Yad Vashem as 'Righteous Among the Nations' in 1996 for saving 382 Jewish people during World War II. So PSV has some strong links to Judaism as well...

You also mention that Ajax and Feyenoord are maybe more successful clubs considering the trophies that they've won. The 'maybe' was a good one because as it is true for Ajax, it isn't for Feyenoord. To compare the two by the trophies won: Europa Cup 1: both clubs won it once Europa Cup 3 (UEFA Cup): PSV won it once, Feyenoord twice Intercontinental Cup: Feyenoord won the match in 1970, PSV lost is in 1988 Dutch league (Eredivisie): PSV won it 24 times, Feyenoord 15 Dutch Cup (KNVB Beker): PSV won it 10 times, Feyenoord 13 Dutch Super Cup (Johan Cruyf Schaal): PSV won it 13 times, Feyenoord 4 So if you calculate the number of prices won by both teams it is 49-36 in favor of PSV... International Feyenoord did a better job by winning two more trophies but on the national level PSV was way more successful and also ended as runners up many times.

But wait! There is more! It's the Philips Sports Team as you called it and that is absolutely correct. There is not only PSV the football team, no, there is also athletics, badminton, basketball, Cricket, Checkers, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Baseball (+softball), Korfball, Rugby, Fencing, Tennis, Volleyball and Swimming (+waterpolo) Not all of their sportsteams became really succesfull. But...A lot of great sportsmen and sportswomen have played for the PSV sports teams. Eg. former MLB players (baseball in the USA) Rick van den Hurk & Alexander Smit. Also former NBA player Rik Smits has played for PSV (basketball). Obviously, the football team and also the swimming team are the most succesful ones. Which other sports team (certainly football team which also has other sports teams) can say that they have multiple Olympic Gold winners (and also silver and/or bronze medals) like Pieter van den Hoogenband, Mitja Zastrow, Klaas-Erik Zwering, Marcel Wouda, Inge de Bruijn, Kirsten Vlieghuis, Marleen Veldhuis, Inge Dekker, Hinkelien Schreuder, Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Chantal Groot, Sharon van Rouwendaal and also the fastest person to swim through the Strait of Dover, Ton Brouwer and another amazing swimmer (and also Olympic Gold winner) who swam the 192km long Elfstedentocht (in one time!) Maarten van der Weijden. Back to football. PSV is also one of the few teams who made it to the finals of the Premier League International Cup (the 'Champions League for u21 teams).
