The coming privacy crisis on the Internet of Things | Alasdair Allan | TEDxExeterSalon

Mark Zuckerberg may have declared that privacy is no longer a social norm, but Alasdair Allan believes a backlash is coming. In this talk, he explores how the internet has changed the concept of ownership and explains why the Internet of Things - combined with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation - could soon determine whether we have any privacy at all.
Alasdair is a scientist, author, hacker and journalist.

TEDxExeterSalon: From driverless cars to diagnosis of medical imaging, artificial intelligence is being heralded as the next industrial revolution. But how does AI relate to us in all our glorious complex humanity? Our first TEDxExeterSalon explored the ways in which we’ll interact with algorithmic intelligence in the near future.
TEDxExeter: Now in our 7th year, TEDxExeter is Exeter’s Ideas Festival with global reach, licensed by TED and organised by volunteers who are passionate about spreading great ideas in our community.

Filming: firstsightmedia.co.uk/ In the past he has mesh networked the Moscone Center, caused a U.S. Senate hearing, and contributed to the detection of what was - at the time -the most distant object yet discovered. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I would (and do) happily pay a small monthly charge for basic internet services that don't invade my privacy.

It is surprising that a privacy backlash of a reasonable magnitude hasn't come yet, what with smartphones being the perfect surveillance device. IOT will only serve to improve the data that is already being supplied to advertising companies through our smartphones.

A good proprtion of western society is basically thick and unintelligent. Witness the rise of reality TV and the slavish and utterly purile clap trap these zombies are glued to. That's the problem here. It's the reason we have so much consumer debt and a generation completely out of touch with basic money management and budgeting, who don't know the difference between a want and a need.

Everyone keep in mind the internet now knows you know about internet privacy and they expect you to not do anything about it.

The Tesla argument was not fair, as maintaining a battery that uses the last 20 % or so is way more expensive (hence reserved to higher paying subscribers). It is somewhat akin to people filling only half their tank to have less weight to carry and consume less: they save up, but they also have a shorter range. Maybe Tesla could have a paid-per-usage option for this range extension (much appreciated in case of emergency). A few could be free too. Anyway, you got the point.

I was taught that the second vowel is short and makes the first vowel long. That's why it's pronounced preye- vacy. You don't use the short sound of the vowel i . As in bicycle. It's not a bi sickle.

With Tesla, is opposite way, they agree to pay less for less range, and Tesla for free give them something, they agree they not pay for. Is like Intel cpu without K, you can't overclock them, even they have physic possibility to do it, but you buy them for cheaper.
