So sorry both of you were so sick w/ the flu😐. Take care of that cough Miranda. Really enjoyed this even though I did not read the book. It is now on my TBR list! Sounds delightful! I often think I was born in the wrong century because I am SO drawn to and desire, old houses, books, towns, clothing; the atmosphere that enveloped in those things. I lived in A house in Massachusetts (New England) that was built in mid 1700's. Also a house in Romeo, Michigan that was built in the early 1800's. Quite the privilege and experience. My father was a historic reproduction builder. All the homes I lived in growing up in Massachusetts were built by him. He truly was Master builder, an artist. I am thankful I grew up steeped in history! Thank you both for the discussion

Hello Miranda and Donna, I’m glad to see you are feeling much better. 👏 I listened to Gavin’s book twice! The first time I wasn’t concentrating enough and once I’d finished listening, started all over again. I thoroughly enjoyed the hidden history of English country life, and the book inspired me to look for a print of Brueghel’s winter scene to hang in my house, soon. Thank you both for that treasure. ❤❤

I loved this book and it planted the wish in me to one day go there and see this area for myself. And I have to go to Vienna again to see Breughel's paintings. Last time I went, which was also my first time, I solely focussed on Dürer's drawings and paintings. I love it when books give you new travel ideas. Thank you for choosing this book for the comfort book club. I'm so looking forward to the interview and the December issue of Seasons of Story to read Gavin Plumley's text and hear his voice! Have a lovely week, dear Miranda and Donna!❤😊

This is the first time I come to CBC having only listened to the audiobook, however as it was read by the author I felt it was a good second best! I love Breughel paintings (there was a great exhibition in Birmingham last Winter) and I was fascinated by his use of these to describe the English landscape of the 16th century. His writing is lyrical, his life enviable, his home sounds very desirable…..I’m going to have to buy the book at some point. Look after yourself in your recovery period. Now onto “Little Women”, read several times but this time I already have a beautiful edition bought second hand in Concorde, Mass.

Thank you, Miranda, Donna and voicemail contributors! What a lovely book to read and discuss. Today, being a very mobile society, we are often disconnected from our roots and our past but Gavin Plumley shows that one can form a deep and meaningful connection with a home, a town and a region anywhere we end up living. Plumley's writing is eloquent. My favorite passage is on page 176 in which Plumley describes the wind starting with " though its high back also acts as a perfect shield against the winds... " The wind takes on an almost paranormal quality as he writes that it starts in the ridges and the bluffs racing down to the hills, and then along the street into the inn in which the high back of the settle protects customers from its raw chill. In my mind, I picture the wind as an entity that rapidly and viciously courses its way over the landscape until reaching the town and its inhabitants. Very nice!

Thank you Miranda and Donna. Sending you all the best for a full recovery. Gavin's book is very special and I really found it fascinating. He writes beautifully with such powerful imagery and I also listened to him read the book as an audio. For me the reality of bring the past to life made me very aware of how very hard life was back in the 16th Century. The Little Ice Age was so interesting and thinking about it I remember reading in a book on the Tudors that Henry VIII and his family rode their horses over the River Thames. As the book came to a conclusion I felt the poignant beauty of having touched the past and of the circle of life. I look forward to listening to your interview with Gavin soon.

So sorry to learn that you have both been poorly and so happy that you are on the road to recovery. There seems to be a virus doing the rounds just now. Look after yourselves.

This book is delightful! Another one in a similar vein I enjoyed was "At Home" by Bill Bryson. Enjoy your channel so much, thank you for always having such lovely content and great book recommendations!

Well, after this lovely episode, and an ex-pat myself, I must get this book sent to Canada! I’m sure it will cause a pang of nostalgia for a place Ive never been. Wishing you both a continued speedy recovery❤🇨🇦 Edit: I just purchased thru your affiliate link. Looking forward to this one! I would not have come across this without you!

Hi Miranda. I notice you recently suggested giving a subscription to your your Bookish Almanac as a gift. However, I tried to join a few weeks ago and insta said you're fully subscribed amd that I'm on a waitlist. Can I check if this is correct please? Asking as I'd be surprised if you're suggesting it as a gift when there is no space available to join. Thanks, and I hope you fully recover soon.

That's very odd! No, it's not fully subscribed (far as I know, there's no limit on number) and also people have been subscribing recently with no problem. xxx
