The Columbia River Shad Run (Catch & Cook) | Bonneville Dam 2023

Ойын-сауық

For the first time ever, I went down to fish the annual Columbia River shad run. Each spring, the American Shad runs up the Lower Columbia River to Bonneville Dam to spawn. This provides great opportunities for both novice and experienced anglers.

Shad kept on ice until scaled and chunked, brined mildly overnight, lightly smoked for about 45min, then canned in a pressure cooker is better than canned tuna or salmon IMO.

Second this. You can make some really tasty fish dips or spreads for bagels doing this.

I do something similar. Brine, smoke, canned. Then get out a good cracker and Cougar Gold cheese. Throw away the shad, eat crackers and cheese.

I catch them with fly rod and bare small red octopus hook no weight just spray with wd-40 or your favorite shrip scent, the Shad are running close to the bank 10-15’ find a current slot with tailout on point and fish the seam. I find most darts are way to big and not nearly as effective as just a single small weightless red or green bare hook that looks like small shrimp. This rigging is very effective and quite fun and easy for kids too on a small fly rod I use 4 wt.

When i go shad fishing i use hardly any weight. I generally catch them 20 feet or less drom shore. Best thing is cast up stream a bit count to 10 and then start reeling. Usually they are already hooked

I stopped using shad darts. I just use painted jigheads. The books are better overall they're cheaper. I did best on the 1/8th oz chartreuse.
