I mean, the problem was never that Color of Magic and Light Fantastic are bad, the problem is the rest are way too good. But I totally agree: it feels charming to see Pratchett find his footing in those first books, knowing what comes later!

Death is different not because Pratchett's style changes later or because reconning or anything like that, Death goes through a lot of character development later. Which is one of the many many reasons why reading in release order is great. :)

I always recommend the early discworld books to hitchhikers guide to the galaxy fans. They have a similar kind of humor and surrealism to their respective genres

Find the live action adaptation, it has Sean Astin, Tim Curry, David Bradley, Jeremy Freakin Irons as Vetinari! CHRISTOPHER LEE AS DEATH!!! It’s not perfect, but you can tell they really tried and cared for the source material. Ook!

Twoflower's view of the world is that of a 'tourist' rather than an adventurer. A tourist's adventure isn't over until they go home and tell everyone about it.

I started Discworld by publishing date and I loved that chaoticness that is almost a fairytale feeling! The most memorable moment for me was the part with Rincewind and the tree and how their whole religion started 😂 also that poor artist/architect guy story cracks me up.

There is a pretty well made adaptation of the books with Sean Astin as Twoflower and it's quite amusing. Ook. And yeah, DEATH in later books is much more interesting since well, he has his own books and he evolves to a wonderful character we all love (from a far). Now onward to Equal Rites and the introduction of my favorite char - Granny Weatherwax. Have fun!

Terry Pratchett is my favorite writer. When i heard about his passing in 2015 i literally start to cry. :( I don't know if this is normal reaction, beacause I never even met him, but i felt like i lose a friend. :(

I still havent been able to read The Sheperds Crown. Id preordered it and have had it since release but cant bring myself to read it because that means there no more Discworld

Favorite Line: Twoflower is running away from the Red Star Cult members guiding a stunned Rincewind and turns to face them saying, "Get back I have a wizard and I'll use him!" Simply hilarious!

Sir Terry pratchett .. his books warmed my heart the years I spent on the streets..

I’m really glad you enjoyed the first two. I think what they lack is the focus he developed. He had a lot of mad ideas, but was able to pull them together to form a compelling story. According to an assistant who worked with him, that often happened quite late on the day. Maybe part of the reason some people think you can skip these 2 books entirely is that you will find he revisits most of the more interesting ideas later in various books, but with better spins on them. But I still think seeing them in their first outing is fun. It also means you’ll spot references as and when they occur later. I’m sure you’ll love Equal Rites. Can’t wait!

Possibly one reason people might be hard on these two books is if they've reread the whole series a lot of times, they can feel a bit more like chores you have to get out of the way to get to the good stuff. Myself, I'm not crazy about The Colour of Magic, which I think is a little uncharacteristically glib, but I think The Light Fantastic is a huge step forward and I still hold it up as one of the funniest of the series. Thing is, there are no capital-b Bad Discworld books, even the few weaker ones have redeeming features and they're rarely difficult to get through. Glad you're having fun and I'm pretty sure you will continue to do so.

I enjoyed the imp powered camera. That Two Flower was an insurance salesman.

I loved the color magic Rinse wind just Stumble through life Amazed that he survived it Also the luggage Is great Probably my favorite character. Hrun the barbarian was also a standout

Concur. I know a lot of people prefer the Watch and some of the characters introduced later, but Rincewind & the Luggage will always be my favorites.

Pratchett's Strata is interesting as it features a proto-Discwold universe in a scifi story. In the science of discworld books and lectures he discusses how the goal was building a world that just makes sense. Good watches/reads too.

The more I've re-read of Discworld, the more I've noticed Pratchett's sci-fi leanings.

I read Discworld in published sequence starting way back when, and I think I was hooked from the first mention of the Big Bang hypothesis.

All through his time writing Discworld, Terry Pratchett was also writing for children, with the Amazing Maurice books, the Tiffany Aching series, and the Nomes. You might want to read them too. He writes more simply, but never in a way that makes the reader feel he dumbs it down. There's also a graphic novel set in Discworld called The Last Hero about the Silver Horde (you'll know them when you get there). I highly, highly recommend all of PTerry's stuff. Even the Science of Discworld books, though those are partly non-fiction and a bit rambly.

The Bromeliad Trilogy (books about nomes) are among my favorite STP books, they were actually my introduction to his works way before Discworld. Love them.

oh man, you're gonna have the BEST time when you get to the Death books

One thing I love, from the very little Prachett I've read so far (I aim to change this in the near future) is that unreality is a real place Spoilers for Guards Guards: At least when it comes to dragons. The fact that the dragon being summoned from non-existence somehow managed to find its path into existence and self-summon to continue to terrorize Ankh-Morpork has *fascinating* philosophical implications.

Loved these two books, but they are 100% chaos. I started with Small Gods and Mort and both were great to start with. Glad you enjoyed them as well. I'm pretty sure the joke about gods putting bones to mess with archaeologists is a jab at creationists believing that dinosaur bones were put there to make us think the world isn't 1000 years old or w/e. So much of his sarcasm, no matter how silly, has revelence in our real world.

I love these books, although I myself started reading Pratchett when I was still a young teen, so I was sort of growing up with him and was at a perfect age to enjoy these two books when I discovered him. I still love them, though! I actually think that all his first five books have the "starting out and experimenting" feel to them, and even in books 3-5 where he's starting to explore ideas, he does it in a simplified way compared to what it grows to be. That said, it's still Pratchett, so it's still great, and he grows with every book, I think.

Yay! I 've been rereading chronologically too. Difference is, I read them as they came out back in the day, so it's a rela ride down memory lane for me. Lots of good stuff ahead. It amazed me how he morphed from goofy silly stuff to deep philosophy without me even noticing

They’re still great books. The thing that people identify is that the early books are parody of classic fantasy tropes - humour for its own sake. The latter ones are more satirical - exploring ideas and commenting on society through humour. It’s in satire that Pratchett really shines, but the early books are still fun reads. Also, watch the movies of these books! Two-Flower is our boy Sean Astin.

After the Dungeon Dimensions kerfuffle at the end of Sourcery the disc got a little less magical (as in the power of magic is reduced series wide) so seeing early disc is quite intresting. In other words, the disc gets a soft reboot at the end of book 5.

It makes sense that these books are a bit Haphazard. He was just dabbling. I like the story of him saying hes done with discworld like 5 books in. He calls Neil Gaimon to tell him and Neil goes "But i want to learn more about Death." Terry calls him up later and goes "Its called *Mort* your welcome" then he hung up. Lol

Yes! The luggage is a puppy 😄 a big, dangerous and adorable puppy! Glad you're having so much fun. I can see what you mean about sometimes reading Douglas in the more purely absurd sections. Equal Rites is my least favourite of the witches books, because one of the characters doesn't read like herself yet; however that probably won't be a problem since you haven't read her yet, so enjoy!

Fair enough, I can see how that's possible. I happen to love her hard-nosed way, but if if you don't Equal Rites would probably be favourite. He lets her be a lot more (openly) scared and uncertain

I started to read DiscWorld some years ago, and I decided immediately to go with the chronological order... I loved every step of my journey, and I'm currently reading "Interesting Times".

I am reading Pratchett with some finnish bookstagram-people in publishing order so I read first these two. They weren't my favourites in the series but solid enough for me to continue in the Discworld. My most recent read was The Small Gods which was the first one I have given 5 stars. Absolutely loved that book.

two of the best minor characters ever - The Luggage & The Librarian

Honestly, I really love these books because they're so whimsical... They're comfort books for me now :) I love the relationship between Twoflower and Rincewind, their adventures through a world so strange and foreign, the Wyrmberg is such a cool idea and plays out in such an amusing manner, the sea troll alien is super cool and I love the reveal of the purpose of the octavo. It's just great fun, and sure the other books are fantastic satire and great commentary, these two are just so much fun!

If Rincewind seems oddly familiar, it's because he's basically Shaggy from Scooby Doo. Sadly, none of the characters from the Wyrmberg show up again in the series, though a different recently-assassinated royal ghost appears in Wyrd Sisters.

As someone who read the Discworld in a similar humdrum order first, the first two books have a distinct "Saturday Morning Cartoon" feeling that is not as present in later books. It feels like something I would have *loved* as a kid. So much happens, so many silly characters show up it's great! If nothing else, I think this duology is a decent introduction to the setting, because even if a lot of its details do change later, you still get a good idea of almost everything

Agreed lots of people are too hard on Colors and Light. They are great debuts for him, for what they are, but they're also not really that representative of the rest of Discworld.

I didn’t start with The colour of magic. I started with Reaper Man and then went back when a friend leant me the first book (after being horrified I started with Reaper Man) but I didn’t find going back to the start that jarring. There was still a lot to like in Magic.

I loved these two just because of how haywire Rincewind is and the comedic chaos. Have you read Ursula LeGuin tho? Could you do a review of the Earthsea series? A lot of people compare it to Harry Potter but a lot more real.

Definitely true... fun but way less social commentary and deep thoughts. I was just reading one of the Wirches books (won't spoil anything)... and I'd never noticed the parallels between faerieland and mental illness. I would have loved to have heard Robin Williams take on the confusion of separating reality from fantasy. Also made me wonder at what point and to what extent Terry Pratchett introduced elements of his dementia and looming mortality. He put so much of himself in the series, I miss him lots. Thank you for the stories, Mr. Pratchett.

You know, if critics keep dissing their grand premiere, sooner or later the luggage will want a word. Also, if Two Flower is Merphy does that mean if chaos was electricity in her life that she would spend her time on a hilltop, during a thunderstorm, wearing copper armor, while shouting all gods are bastards?

I think Color of Magic was brilliant...hers why: in the middle somewhere, Pratchet writes that there was rip in the reality separating universes ...and a psychologist saw a girl riding a dragon ... so I looked up some things ... I believe the psychologist he was referring to was Carl Jung...and here is some other info about dragons, riding dragons, and dragons in caves In a very old 1920s dream dictionaries the dragon symbolism in a dream can suggest that you have some powers of imagination and creativity. There is always a veil of uncertainty whether Dragon/existed and in a dream sense whether you’re connected with the astral plane. Dragons are a symbol of protection. And dreams of Dragon represent your own fears. Symbolically the Dragon is female and dominates the masculine qualities in life. To fight the dragon in the dream indicates that you might be in conflict with your parents. The famous dream psychologist Sigmund Freud indicated that the Dragon itself was a symbolism of our own mother. In Freud's terms the dragon symbolizes our inner anima, and the Dragon is seen as a new source of renewed life. This could be further illustrated if you see the Dragon in a cave. The cave in a dream represents your womb. The cave is a place of rebirth. So, it is quite interesting symbolism that represents both the mother and father aspects of your emotions. My wife and I enjoyed thses books, the 3rd entry Sourcery in THE UNSEEN UNIVERSITY COLLECTION of stories does jump off from these books and is good aswell.

The reason I usually encourage newbies to start elsewhere isn't because the first two books are bad, but because to me they are not great representations of the series as a whole. In the first books it feels like Pratchett is using the real world to satirize fantasy tropes (which is quite silly and fun). But in the books afterward he begins to flip the script and use fantasy to satirize the real world, and that's when things really start getting really interesting (while Still being silly and fun!) So I'm afraid people will read the first book or two and just wind up going, "It's alright, but I don't think I want to read 40 books of this, so I'm just gonna stop here."

I find that these 2 books are both Pratchett. Getting his feet wet and very much. A tour of the disk world. You see a ton of snippets of things that may go deeper if you look into them in other books but overall its closer to an overview. A guided tour of the world's possibilities. Evens Deaths differences can be taken as situational since the gods seem to be making a game of trying to kill Ryncwind. though his first lines sold me on this Death. Though there are more people defying death here than any other i can think of 🤔. In many ways Ryncwind is just the least intentioned most successful dodger.

Ankh-morpork city watch is the best series in the Discworld books can't wait for you to reach them!

Looking forward to hear what you thought of Equal Rights. A lot of the series are set around male characters and I want to know how you'll feel about things being set around female protagonists. I also like the strength Pratchett gives his female characters. Thet don't need to prove they're as tough or tougher... they're just badasses (it's a pune you'll get after) that happen to be female.

The Colour of Magic was a bit of a love letter to Leiber, Howard & Lovecraft. Its structure comes straight from Leiber’s Sword series. Your mate Daniels advice to miss this book was just wrong (to be fair, I usually find him to be wrong, as much as I enjoy his stuff).

First to take Merphy to Discworld ;)

The imagine dragons remind me a bit of spren from Stormlight. Come into the world based on the thoughts of a person and then go somewhere else until called back again.

I hope so. I started listening to a Discworld podcast that talked about them and Maurice so flippantly and not acknowledging them in the total count whenever asked how many there were and talking really grudgingly when listeners encouraged them to read. They're great, am very surprised at the stance of some people some time.

I read quite a bit of Terry Patchett (Disk World) quite some time ago. I enjoyed them very much. During that time I also read Terry Brooks's Shannara Serries up to the 19th book. I liked the Shannara Series better but enjoyed them both. Both are lighter than my usual fantasy reading. I am now down to two Booktubers, You and Johanna. I had to un-subsribe to my Third Booktuber because she said that for some one to like Malazan and The Witcher they would have to be a misogynist. Well, I had to look up the word to see what kind of psychological problem I had. I was very sad that she said that. I guess yourself, Johanna and I are misogynist..... or maybe she is wrong.
