The College Board Monopoly on Education

The College Board owns the AP, PSAT and SAT tests, which brings in millions in profit every year. And behind this monopoly is the fact that these companies really sell to schools, not students.

    I knowwww. I took international APs this year (which have an entrance fee that is double the cost of US tests for a nonexistent reason), meaning that my family had to spend hundreds of dollars on 45 minute single question exams that in no way reflected the work I've done over the year.

    For at least half a century now, school has hardly been about figuring out how smart you are or actually furthering your education. For at least half of us, it’s been about seeing how well you can play the game and seeing if you’re willing to put in disgusting amounts of money for classes that teach you things you’ll never use in life so you can get a fancy slip of paper that says you’re superior to all the people who never got that slip of paper.

  • @amytg777

    @amytg777

    4 жыл бұрын

    You're only half-correct, if that. There's no real currency of intelligence, IQ is a sham, and it never should be about that. And while education is important to furthering your education, these tests aren't supposed to help you learn. They're to provide colleges with results on how you can fare in an academia environment. And if you think the slip of paper makes you better, you deserve jail time. That being said, society is becoming more and more advanced at an astronomical rate, and the jobs of the future (the future 5 years from now) will likewise require more and more qualified people. So this "never gonna need to know" shtick becomes more and more ignorant as time goes on. And of course I feel the need to say monopolies suck and college board has no right to sap as much money as it does. If I had reign of the government, I would force collegeboard to halve prices or get taxed ridiculously as the for-profit organization it is. Probably by providing a more affordable government alternative. But I really wish everyone would cut the crap about "ehhhhh all education is about playing the game and doesn't care about how smart you truly are". Selectivity is not a bad thing and there do need to be set criteria to determine who gets in and who gets out. College does not have the time, money, nor will to individually develop every single special snowflake.There are certain base guidelines they want to set for prospectives, and certain things they want to achieve with them. College can not hold everyone, and it doesn't have to.

Apprenticeships are the only way I can make it unless I have that TV moment where I say something wicked smart, but I'm an assistant or something, and they suddenly hire me or ask me to help on a project. lol. Not to mention, in an office environment I will probably have to work twice as hard since I am guessing architecture is a pretty male-dominated field, and the world has yet to change. • @fastdollar1

    @fastdollar1

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hear me out, I'm not trying to antagonize you; I want to share my perspective. Sorry this is long, I just wanted to explain my points. I'll address your global warming and metrics comment later on in the comment. Okay, from your linked videos and comments, it seems that you are supporting a combination of three things: 1. You want kids to enjoy school 2. You want test scores national and international to go up on underachieving first world countries like the US and parts of England 3. You want kids to develop creativity and critical thinking 1) So for this conversation, I'm using SK and Finland as definitions of 'good schools' from the fact that they ranked among the top 5 in PISA and TIMSS and that they are very different from each other geographically and culturally. What percentage of students report that they enjoy school? About one third for both SK and Finland. How about the US? About Half. American students report liking school way more than high achieving countries but an average of 12% drop out nationally (there's a lot of variance between schools in America so keep that in mind with this statistic and this is minus the transfer and incompletion rate). The dropout rate in Finland is 1% and dropout rate in SK is 3%. How do you reconcile that kids like school more in the US but dropout at higher rates? These are rigorous courses, as Daniel Kahneman said, "thinking is hard" and we avoid every instance of it that we can. No one enjoys grinding but schools that are most successful must perform hard tasks. American schools are not hard, believe me- actually you don't have to, look at the UC San Diego Annual Freshmen Study and you can believe where the evidence points. I went to a private school in Philippines which gave me an excellent education but I would not say it was enjoyable. Hard work is not enjoyable; these education reformers want too sugarcoat education and trick students into believing everything will be fun if you just like going to school enough. 2) So I'm not exactly sure if you support standardized national/international scores but your argument wouldn't hold if you didn't support their finding. The education reform movement BEGAN when NAEP, TIMSS, and PISA scores said that American and British students were in decline measured against previous generations' scores and the scores of other countries. The new wave of education reform was existentialist to say the least. They wanted to change the metrics by which we judge academic success while also improving on the scores of those metrics. Does that make sense to anyone? P *Now to address your comment on metrics and numbers. I'm a little confused because of your global warming and your psychology statement. You are certainly right that there is more to life than numbers but numbers are the closest you are going to get to the truth which is how we can prove global warming (temp. data over time) but then you denounce metrics because of psychology? Psychologists must use numbers to support ANYTHING they claim. do not take this point lightly. My analytics professor once quoted some guy I forgot his name, "Data without theory is trifle, theory without data is bullshit." Psychologists sample and find the central limit to a population (numbers), measure IV and DV and control the rest (numbers), perform hypothesis testing and regression analysis (numbers). Every science NEEDS data, otherwise it wouldn't be science and we'd be approaching an issue with simply how we feel about it which is what's happening with the global warming 'debate'. 3) So the critical thinking and creativity argument I agree with. I agree with reformers that there is more need for it in schools but not the way they are advertising it. So I'm using Ken Robinson's RSA school model. They have performed worse than traditional schools on standardized tests because there is a glaring lack of structure in their curriculum. Reading, writing, and math are not sexy but they are fundamental. The project structure of RSA schools has kids going off in the blind doing their own research and projects without the necessary prior knowledge to help them 'think deeply'. My abbreviated answer to your arguments are as follows 1) Students and teachers must accept that thinking and studying at a level that is meaningful is hard work. We mustn't sugarcoat education to a model that promises eternal enjoyment and passion of the subject which is not to say we shouldn't encourage engagement and fun curriculum, I'm advocating that rigorous courses are realistically challenging and they need some serious mental labor. 2) Objective measures are imperfect but they give us something to improve upon. Intangibles are just that, qualities that can't be measured but that is not to say they aren't important, they just can't be operated on scientifically speaking. Without data, it's the legally blind leading the blind. If we get rid of objective measures, then this ceases to be a productive argument. 3) Creativity and critical thinking are best with prior knowledge, good instruction, and rigorous curriculum. The traditional lecture style and homework may appear archaic but they have been proven effective for our measures (Refer to Hattie's meta-analysis). Please read it with an open mind; I spent a lot of time doing this instead of my homework. If you have any critiques please tell. This was a lot but I just wanted a place to voice my perspective because Education/Public Policy is eventually a domain I'm planning to pursue for my career. For any of my claims, if you want a source, ask and I'll scavenge them on scihub, I would post them now but I'm strapped for time.

    Nelson Vargas just to mention, I live in england. The idea that "you have to work hard" to succeed in school is a shell this system is hiding behind. School isn't hard - it is boring. It is so boring it starts becoming hard. I am currently in the UK's schooling system, and my least favourite subjects are languages like German and French. I find it boring and tedious, and yet if I try, I can easily accomplish the work, and even more if I wish. But I rarely try since it is not interesting. I am pretty sure this is true for others, since a lot of people in my school have felt the same. However, I go to a "grammar school", a type of school where you have to take standardized tests to enter, and the people there are supposedly of " high intelligence". So I could see why my view could be biased. But from my experience, the people there are hardly more intelligent at all. They can't grasp more complex concepts that are out of schools reach and have no curiosity what so ever. All they are good at is mechanically spitting out information they revised onto a test paper. You assume that these reformists want a "sugar coated education", whereas this assumption comes from a belief that humans are not natural learners. Search up the " hole in a wall " experiments (www.ted.com/talks/sugata_mitra_shows_how_kids_teach_themselves). This is a amazing study, showing how powerful the human mind is. He has made more videos on that, even furthering his pool of evidence. And you mention metrics. Well there are not many, but you can find loads of articles and videos saying "why do kids find school boring" or "why do kids hate school", already based around the assumption that kids find schooling boring. (Here is one metric by the telegraph: www.telegraph.co.uk/education/secondaryeducation/4297452/School-is-boring-and-irrelevant-say-teenagers.html). And I woudn't be suprised either. Nearly every single person I know finds school boring. Not too mention, there are multiple other problems that I haven't mentioned about school yet (e.g. lack of self - discipline, never taught anything relevant to real life, the way the schooling system works essentially being a monarchy, not a democracy, the lack of belief in children - leading to children believing they are incompetent until they become adults, homework invading your free time with no proven advantage, suppression of kids real passion's, e.t.c) EDIT: Hundred years ago, there were no metrics proving global warming. Did that mean global warming was false? Just because governments and exam & curriculum boards are suppressing this fundamental error in society, leading to not many people doing studies on it, does not mean it is false EDIT 2: Please don't use standardized testing as a metric. It doesn't work and does not show intelligence. All standardized testing is is the ability to memorize some useless facts and throw them onto a piece of paper. Nothing else. Also, curriculums are not useful. Children can pursue what they like and will learn basic necessities through experience and surroundings. Just look into how Sudbury school kids fared. Actually, thinking about it, that is also another good metric. When some Sudbury school kids where surveyed after schooling, none of them said they would have rather gone to a conventional school. EDIT 3: Scihub seems "academic". Doesn't look trustworthy in terms of school system facts EDIT 4: "It can be difficult to understand Sudbury schools before you have spent some time in one. These schools have a lot of structure, but not of an obvious kind - especially if you are used to the academic achievement-oriented structures of traditional schooling" (www.didyoulearnanything.net/about/sudbury/) EDIT 5: www.educationfutures.org/outcomes.htm Double edged sword, this source. One edge says biased (the fact that this article is written by someone who founded Sudbury schooling), other edge says resourceful (the fact that this person has had experience with lots of Sudbury school graduates)

    This is one of my worries: I may literally not be able to pay for my AP exams. By the College Board's definition, I have been homeless for the past 5 or 6 years due to having a single mother that doesn't have a job half of the time, and the other half of the time has a job within $1 from minimum wage hourly. I've been making straight A's, studying diligently in order for me to be within the top 3% of PSAT/SAT scores for my grade each year, and taking AP classes to get my GPA closer to 5.0; so I'm probably considered a "good student with a lot of potential" to many people. I do this so that I have a chance at getting out of this crummy situation in the future. But, again, the College Board's monopoly on education makes it difficult for me to afford these tests. Of course, I'm aware that the cost of AP exams can be put at a discount for financially struggling students, but the price is still very expensive considering the small salary my 2-person family receives, especially with taking multiple AP exams. I expect to begin my first job this month to assist in paying for exams and my education in general, but these tests are still outrageously expensive nevertheless. The College Board should not be considered a non-profit organization. They don't care about educating students -- they solely care about keeping their business afloat and making money, nothing else. It's really depressing knowing that this kind of monopoly makes it so that essentially only the people that can afford it can get good credentials, like a 5 on an AP exam or a 1500 on the new SAT, on their college applications, regardless of whether students deserve it or not. I'm hopeful that something will change soon, but doubtful at the same time. What do you guys think about this? Anyone else have a similar problem?

    I hate the SAT. I'm a student with ADHD and SAT is really //really// unfairly made for students who have disabilities. For perspective, I'm considered an honors student. My weighted GPA is currently a 4.5 and I took AP Calc BC as Junior, getting B's both semesters (which is pretty good considering its Calc BC AND my school doesn't offer a Calc A class - I basically went into Calculus cold). I have been in accelerated classes as long as I can remember and have never really struggled in school with any subject. I regularly take college classes with college students during the summer and do very, VERY well (I've had a 4.0 at UCLA since the end of my freshman year, when I started taking classes). Although the SAT does give accomadations for ADHD, its expensive to get the doctor's referral AND the extra time you get doesn't really help - ESPECIALLY for the math section. With ADHD, theres a lot of wonkiness with how your short vs. long term memory works, so what happens is when you're reading through big blocks of texts packed with information, like on the SAT math section, you get gaps and don't retain anything. The more you read it, the more your brain gets muddled. So I, as a BC Calculus student, repeatedly was getting sub-par scores on my practice tests despite months of studying. The only option I have is the ACT (doing exponentially better with that test). Although colleges say they weigh the SAT and ACT equally, so many people have told me colleges prefer the SAT. It's so unfair and difficult, especially for kids like me who have ADHD or another learning disability.

    I don’t have ADHD, but I’m a Junior in university and my major is Chemical Engineering. So, I’ll say this: the ACT/SAT are garbage. They focus on Math, Science, English, and Literature of all things. All I’ve ever had to do with English is write a couple of papers for some prerequisites, so I don’t know why they’d focus on that. I have not read a single book since starting university. Even textbooks for assignments, you just end up skimming it. Literature is a worthless subject in high school. The ASVAB is a far superior test that tests more types of knowledge than those four and also recommends career types best suited for your academic strengths. Why not just use the ASVAB instead of the SAT/ACT? Once you get into university, your score on the SAT/ACT become meaningless. I only got a 25 out of 36 on mine and I’m on President’s List, meanwhile I have friends of mine that made like 32/36 on the ACT and flunked out in the first semester. Again, why do colleges use these as indicators? They’re horrible indicators

  • @Turtle-.-

    @Turtle-.-

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@aaronlandry3934 As bad as an indicator they might be, it is still the best indicator when you look at other options. Take GPA for example. My school has very little grade inflation and grade incredibly hard (only the top 20% of the class get above a 3.00GPA). Meanwhile, a public school across the street had huge grade inflation where most of the students were receiving 4.0's because, get this, students could retake tests as many times as they wanted. From a college perspective, that school's 4.0 would look better than my school's 2.8. That's hardly fair. Instead, colleges use SAT and ACT as a form of a standard to determine how smart someone is. There is no subjection involved. This was more accurate as my school's average sat was 1490 out of 1600 and the public school across the street's average was 1070.

    College board in 2019 also changed the time period to register for an exam. They made it around 2-3 months earlier, to force students into a decision too early. Everyone at the beginning of the year feels like they can take the AP exam, but several month in, most people realize they shouldn’t due to lack of studying/preparation. This is just one way they trap people into wasting money.

It was especially awful and nerve wracking bc I just got into a whole new school with around 5 of my old friends who barely spoke to me bc 4 of them became juul users. One didn’t but was constantly gone for sports so I was basically alone. I knew no one in the class and had to turn around and pay $98 for a test I wouldn’t even get to take. Even though that is crazy expensive, it allowed me to get 48 hours of college credit, which saves ~$20,000 for me at my particular university. Advanced testing is definitely still worth it, but you’re right-it is set at an unreasonably high price point.

    I can never trust collegeboard again. After the harsh and unfair curve of the June 2018 test, I never thought collegeboard would do something like that again. But in the August 2018 SAT, the used the SAME TEST AS THE INTERNATIONAL OCTOBER 2017test. This test can be found online because it is repeatedly pirated and distributed by prep companies especially in Asia. And lots of Chinese kids came to America to take the August one and so already took the test. There will be hundreds or thousands of 1600s while the curve will ruin things for everybody else. I took a two month $4700 dollar course for this test. Wtf collegeboard recieves millions of dollars from students and they can’t even make a new test. I’m glad that I also studied for the ACT cause collegeboard is going to lose all credibility and already has in my mind. Also in total collegeboard will probably take $1400 from me just for AP tests and like $500 for all PSAT and SAT and $200 for subject tests plus hundreds when I have to send to colleges.

There was no proctor there and no announcement on the college board website about it. I called customer service but apparently the line too busy or something so I just got an automated thing saying to email/call back in 2 weeks. I was beyond livid since I spent a lot of time studying for this exam only for it to be cancelled with 0 notice. I eventually got a refund but I can't take the SAT exam until September and by then I'll be in my senior which I guess is fine but I'm still irritated.

    Take it at the end of your senior year, when you’re at your peak educationally. Then, once you join the military, and get past your tech school and EOC, depending on your branch (I’m in the Air Force, so that’s where this advice is coming from), you should get college benefits that lets you take classes for free each year, up to a certain amount. Since your tech school and job will likely count towards an associates community college degree (called a “CCAF” in the air force), I recommend knocking that out first, and here’s why. When you decide to go for a certain 4 year degree, taking classes on the side of your job, most colleges will apply a certain amount of your credits from your associates (CCAF) to that 4 year degree (so long as they are similar enough subjects). For example, I’m an aircraft mechanic, and have an interest in possibly taking Aeronautics at Embry Riddle. If I get my CCAF in my field first, that’ll count towards about the first 2 years worth of college credits of the aeronautics degree. And when it comes to completing your associates, you can potentially knock that out pretty fast too, since a lot of your job will count towards it, and any classes you have to take to make up the difference, you can potentially earn those credits by simply taking a standardized test in that subject called a “CLEP”. If you pass the CLEP, you get credit for the class without having to take it, and you can take your first clep in a given subject for free... If you fail it however, your second try has a fee. And final piece of advice, do online classes if you can. They’re so much easier when you have a day job in the military.

    Another issue I have with the college board that you didn't touch on is that sometimes schools require/respect college board results more than others. For instance, I was in the IB program in high school, and scored a 7 on the HL math exam (the highest score possible on the highest level), and yet I still had to take Calc 2 my first year of university while my peers who the AP exam got to skip the class. It was even worse in chemistry. No matter how well I did in IB chemistry, I could only get elective credits out of it. For that reason, I took the AP chem exam in addition to the IB chem exam, even when they ostensibly tested the same thing.

    If you pay for a college class and you fail it, should you still get credit because you paid to take the course? $94 to take an exam for college credit that you might fail > $Thousands of dollars to take a college course for credit that you might fail

    Remember, the College Board isn't teaching your course though; your high school is. At least the cost of credits goes to the institution that is providing you an education, but in the case of AP tests, our schools don't get anything from those test fees while the College Board gets everything.

    Comparing AP to IB I am so happy that I took IB. No/little testing fees, assessmenns that you get to choose the question and research things you are passionate about within the material, actually relevant material, and above all a way to see feedback by humans who mark your essays, which has to be done because of the freedom for the assessments the students have.

    In Germany about half of college students are accepted based on high school grades alone, and half is accepted based on waiting lists. Oh, and college is not only free but poor and middle class students get stipents of up to 800$/month, of which they only have to pay back half and up to 5000$, and only after 10 years

    Wow I honestly wish it was similar here, because it's like it's not only our grades that count but also the test scores, extracurriculars, honors, sports, volunteering, competitions, college essay, etc. And it's like they're expecting us to earn all As as well ad everything else just way too overwhelming and like we can't even get a good night's sleep because we're so busy trying to get into college to end up in tens of thousands of dollars of debt for a degree. And it's just so much, feel unfair but I guess we have no choice, if want a certain career.

    At my public highschool: You must take the PSAT in sophomore year, it is paid for by the PTSA. Every other SAT/ACT test is around $55. AP tests are $94 each and a class like AP Macro/Microeconomics is 2 AP tests ($188). Every standardized test is free to us and we usually take 2 in May. Almost every class has a class fee (does not include Humanities, Math, or Language courses). These fees range from $25-$100. You are expected to buy necessities for class, such as AP flashcards, tri-folds, yoga mats, or any project materials not given. If you are in a club, fees are usually around $15. If you are in a sport, fees are $75 + fees to get a physical exam. We have UW Courses (University of Washington courses) available, and the cost to apply the credits from the course to the academic profile of the student is $325. We also have ACT/SAT prep classes which cost about $600. We have drivers education courses which cost around $600 as well. There is a scholarship/financial aid system but I have seldom seen a single student utelize it.

    Yeah, I’d like for there to be more feedback or more of a breakdown of my AP scores. I took 5 AP exams this year and on one exam I got a lower score than I thought I would. It was the Capstone Seminar one, which has so many different parts that it’s hard to know which parts contributed to a lower score.

    I gotta say, there's a reason I check the AP prep books out of my school's library instead of buying them. I also sincerely hop that the college board keeps their youtube videos up in future years. At least where I live the ACT is free for everyone once and those on free and reduced lunch twice but the pricing on these things is ridiculous.

    i got a good score on the SAT but then i got a 36 on the ACT so it didn't even matter because colleges only want to see your very best score. so much money wasted. also, AP tests are only worth taking if you can get credit for them and skip a class in college. so your $90 is only worth it if you get a 3+, sometimes 4+, or in some cases, only if you get a 5. (also many majors require subject tests now which are even more hassle)

    for this past year, AP classes at my school were only 10 dollars each due to a NMSI grant, at the expense of the students attending NMSI sessions on Saturdays a few times a year or doing teacher assigned packets if they had a valid excuse. this coming year, my senior year, won’t be affected by the NMSI grant so we all assume classes will be 100 as usual, unless otherwise stated by the school. problem is, every student asking the faculty for the past 5 months has been met with “we don’t know yet.” how can you expect students to go through scheduling not knowing how much a class costs?? especially with covid happening, the cost of AP classes is completely insane. a lot of the families at my school are lower income, so it’s either fork up a hundred per class now or, if they choose to go to college, fork up 1000 dollars per class. lack of communication between my school and College Board, and College Board’s lack of care at the moment, means me and many other students may end up paying up to 800 dollars out of the blue in the fall and then just pray to get a scholarship to carry us through at least part of college. the NMSI program just showed us all how meaningless the price was.
