The collector's dream watch: The A. Lange & Söhne Grand Lange 1

It took over five decades for the renowned German company A. Lange & Söhne to fully recover after the conflicts of the 20th century nearly destroyed it. The living great-grandson of Ferdinand Adolph Lange sought out to Günter Blümlein, who had done excellent work with IWC and Jaeger-LeCoultre, and assisted him in reviving the family business. Exact 145 years later, Walter Lange established the new business; it took them another four years to introduce their first new collection. The Lange 1 was in addition to the Arkade, Saxon, and Tourbillon Pour le Mérite. It was intended to stand for the pinnacle of German watchmaking, paying homage to the brand's history while also anticipating more cutting-edge design options.
The Grand Lange 1 was developed as a larger alternative to the original 38.5mm casing in later years when it was realised that the catalogue needed a larger watch. Even if it somewhat filled the void, watchmaking takes years to perfect. A. Lange & Söhne introduced the calibre L095.1 in 2012 to address the dial arrangement that resulted from employing the same movement as the Lange 1 in a larger case.
The most recent Grand Lange 1 employs the same L095.1 as the one that was unveiled at Watches & Wonders 2022 last year, but manages to reduce the size of the watch to just 8.2mm tall. That greatly improves the wearing experience for a 41mm watch without reducing the desired wrist presence. The deconstructed dial is expertly organised, using the golden ratio's geometrical principles to organise its arrangement rather than spreading intricacies at random. With its designated subdials and large opera-style date window that can be adjusted with a pusher on the left side, it is very simple to read.

This design, colour combination, everything is right. How this somewhat chaotic scattered dial can be so considered and look so perfect is simply genius. I don’t think there’s another word for it. One of the best things about this channel is that it examines and highlights watches and brands that are stunning and off the beaten track. Fantastic thank you

As a 6ft3 guy, i really don't see the need for 41mm on this kind of watch. The 38.5mm model with 8.5mm thick would be perfect.

Gorgeous. Fun fact, the first Lange One movements actually used the gear trains from a JLC movement and the big date mechanism was also donated by JLC to Lange when they were under the same management with Gunther Blumlein. JLC - always there with the big boys; Vacheron, Patek, AP and even the resurgence of Lange.

That’s a brilliant piece of detail. It’s always been a mystery to be why JLC aren’t held in the same reverence as some of the other elite players. Without them, they wouldn’t be where they are now!

@@davidb5720 I think that's precisely the problem; they've always mainly been a movement manufacturer. Their designs (apart from the Reverso) have not been particularly memorable. And this is coming from a die hard JLC fan.

It did indeed - the brand was relaunched in 1990 by Walter Lange and Blumlein, Lange 1 follows a few years later

Nice video. In the photos you have shown MJ appears to be wearing the first generation Datograph and Ed Sheeran appears to be wearing a Zeitwerk, both are Lange watches but not the Lange 1.

I gotta say when I photograph and film these watches it was a Lange caseback which was the first to absolutely blow my mind with its beauty and cityscape. When you just look through the lens and see this horological architecture you can start to understand the universe of a watchmaker. Breathtaking

The Saxonia is perhaps a bit more conservative and lacks the grail appeal of the Datograph and Lange One - not as often a grail I'd say.

Dont you have wrong date problem during 10pm to 1am because L901 (swan neck opposite to crown) has slow date change problem during this time period? Say what is date shown at 11pm, today or tomorrow, or number is half turned? The recent L121 (swan neck at crown side) fixed to be instantaneous at midnight.

Congrats for you lange 1 what an elegant and fine taste you have.👏🏻 I have the 25th ann lange 1, with argenté dial with hinged cuvette. Thats the best lange 1 out there for me. I cannot get enough of it's elegenat dial 🙇🏻♂️🥹🤍
