The Cold Steel TuffLite Pocketknife: the Full Nick Shabazz Review

This is the first in a series of "Thrifty Thursday" reviews, covering budget-friendly EDC pocketknives and gear, aimed at finding the real gems under $35.
The Cold Steel TuffLite is a $30 knife with a short wharncliffe blade, good ergonomics, and solid plastic build. Although you don't get much fit and finish for your money, and the design's got a few compromises, it's not a bad choice for a budget cutting tool, and if the design appeals to you, you could do a lot worse!

Thanks for another great review! Honesty, I like that Cold Steel advertises that their knives are tough. It seems like a lot of guys expect to walk around with a $300-400 (or more) envelope opener. There should be something rugged about a pocket knife; you whip it out to get the job done in a pinch, not tippy toe around its limits and delicate tip, and then, when it won’t perform, the company doesn’t honor the warranty because you looked at it funny and hurt its feelings. Seems even more silly than stabbing a pig carcass! Hope my thoughts are something to consider!

I bought this for work. I paid $21 on Amazon. I like it because I can actually use it and not be too worried about damaging it. I was previously using a utility knife and I find the blades to be not nearly as strong or versatile. The handle material is very tough and the clip is excellent. Home Depot should sell this knife. Way better than Dewalt or Milwaukee for less money.

In my opinion the price far outweighs all of your criticisms. None of which bother me at all, i.e. this sounds like a much more than “adequate” knife for my personal expectations for any knife in the $30 price range. Which happens to be MY preferred price range. The most I would ever consider paying for any knife would probably be $60. I would, and fully intend, to buy one.

I know this comment is 2 years old but I thought I would show how times have changed in the knife market. At the time you did this video knife collectors could not expect much for $30-40 price range. Fast forward to Aug. 2018 the selection is mind boggling. Tangram, Civivi. OKC Rat, SRM etc. The quality of the Chinese offerings is just amazing. We now get $100 knife quality for $50 or less. At the moment it is a great time for knife collectors of all price ranges. It is much easier to get a high quality knife in almost any price range.

One thing, the lock travel has a lot to do with the lock strength. Spyderco Lock-Backs are weak because their locks aren't deep enough. With a good Lock-Back, you want the Lock-Bar to seat deep into the blade tang; that's where a lot of the lock strength is in Lock-Back type folders. Especially, one's like the Spyderco's shallow Lock-Back. Personally, I love the ergonomics of the Tuff-Lite. But, I would like to see the blade steel be the New CTS-BD1. But, it's still the best Mini for the price. And, it's one of the easiest knives to re-sharpen and use. For the price range, it's the best Mini out there, in my opinion; it's meant to be a work horse. And, it is. Peace, Stiletto :)

Nick, please don’t think I’m trolling or being an a$$hole, but what is a typical knife usage day for you? I am a regular viewer but the one thing I question is why do you give such importance to whether a knife has super steel or just “average” steel when talking about edc? Is your daily knife usage so extreme that you can’t stop and sharpen your knife? Does the edge have to last a month to be a good knife? I may be wrong, but I would venture to guess that daily usage for at least 90% of your viewers consists of 1) opening a delivery box from something they ordered online, 2) cleaning there fingernails, 3) opening letters, 4) maybe stripping a wire or two while tinkering in their garage, 5) or most likely just whipping it out of their pockets to show off to their friends or coworkers. I understand you are doing reviews, but keep it real. Most viewers never use their knives for anything other than cutting paper or cardboard. Again, my apologies if my comment came off as a$$hole. I’m just old school and view knives as tools and not collectors items. If it cuts, does a good job, and is easy to resharpen, then it’s a winner in my book. Keep up the good work. ,

You say you will refrain from stabbing pigs Nick, but you cannot fool my detective level attention to detail, because between the frames of the video at 2:05 - 2:08 the knife clearly moved 1.9mm, because you took the knife, walked over to your fridge, removed a pack of pork chops, and then stabbed them 39 times before wiping the blade clean, possibly with your tongue, then placing it back down on the table.

Before they sold out to GSM Outdoors and moved to Texas, they used to be based in my town in California. Once a year they would have a big parking lot sale at their HQ. That was fun - they would do cutting demonstrations, give out free hot dogs & have raffle giveaways. Back then, I was never impressed with their knives - most of them were big ugly things with rough plastic handles. At the sale, the local mall ninjas would buy tons of their tanto blades & samurai swords.

It's a box cutter with a triad lock. My question is what could you possibly be doing with this little box cutter blade that would warrant the extra strength of a triad lock? Not sure why this knife needs to exist when you can get a regular box cutter/utility knife for under $10. I guess you might save in the long run on not having to replace blades, but with the way AUS-8 dulls, you might wish you could just replace it after your 50th sharpening in a year. Just a weird knife that I don't understand, but hey, different strokes I guess. INB4 hate from the cult of Cold Steel, which seem to have been out in force in this comment section.

Bought one Tuff lite. I'm not impressed with knife maybe the feel of it not so much with the way it holds sharpness I cut into two boxes then cut two chairs with fabric on them cutting fabric out and now I have to sharpen it and I just bought it two days ago so that's that.

I was going to get this knife for opening boxes but it looks like there are design defects and it’s cheaply made.

This is the perfect knife for the "everyday tasks" enthusiast use their expensive knives for (which makes me put my palm to my forehead heh) e.g. using a $200 knife with good steel, lock mechanisms, ergo to .....break down a box??? One reviewer used his custom $1300 knife to break don boxes too...he claims to be an Dr...WHY?? :) Of course we could use our 2 hands..heh...what i do.

The lock has a "lot of travel" because it sits about 4x's deeper than a regular back lock and that's 1 of the reasons it's soo strong. Also CS is catering to military, law enforcement, and tactical personel and not the edc crowd, which is something you obviously know nothing about. So some of the things that your laughing at , are the strong points of the knife for other groups of people. Not a biggie , you didn't know. ..
