Just for the purpose of historical perspective. The Coasters started their career several years before Ray Stevens. Along Came Jones was a Coasters hit in the summer of 1959 , Ray Stevens had his first hit 2 years later. In 1969, 10 years after Coasters, Stevens had a hit with Along Came Jones. Coasters and Stevens of course made a career of similar styled songs, arrangements and humor. They were all wonderful to watch in live performances.

Surely you are kidding. Comparing the Coasters to Buck Owens is a slap in the face of the originals. No one but you probably ever heard Buck Owens' version. I have never heard the second rate Owens' version. He only had 2 hit songs in his life. Act Naturally was one. Tiger in My Tank I think was the other. This is most definitely not a country song. Lieber and Stoller wrote this for the Coasters. Or his other "hit" might have been Tiger By The Tail. I hated his stupid TV show and I left the room when he was on Hee Haw. The only other group that does this song justice is Sha Na Na in a skit on U Tube.

Cute. Song

I have no idea where the thought of this song came from while I was mocking a TV commercial. I like this ditty.

Along Came Jones, a Gary Cooper movie.
Questa versione è quella che conosco
Delightful! What happens as they go into the chorus though? It's like instead of 'and then along came Jones' they've just got '-long came Jones'!

@@0olong I see what you mean. They were singing live here and lost the tempo after the "And Then" sequence but it came out pretty good except for the ending being cut. The record version is on U Tube and you will hear what they actually meant to say.

@@wesleycook7687 yeah, I grew up with this record! That's why the lack of 'ah-ah! And then along came Jones' threw me so badly.

Along Came Jones, from the Gary Cooper movie with that title.
Great, it sounds though like they messed up the "ah ah and then along came Jones" All they had to do was count off two "ahs" "Ah ah and then along came Jones"

It's because they're singing to a pre-recorded backing track.

I prefer the Ray Stevens version. But I love the bass in this.
Why'd they say Channel One instead of Channel Two?

The old Dupont network was Channel 1 in the 40s. We had an old TV with channel one but there was nothing on it. The next TV we had had channels 2-13 and UHF. There were no channel numbers on the UHF back then.
Years ago, in adolesence, my brother and I had our own version: "And then? He took her shirt off! And then? He took her bra off! And then? He took her pants off! And then? And then? And then?"
Try a new verse, like "If you don't give me the deed to your ranch I'm gonna throw you in the water. He grabbed her, tied her up, threw her in the water, and then the barge started coming."

PC strikes again ! The original recording , last verse : A train started comin' . Great comedy line . Bad grammar , so changed to " A train was coming !" Lost all the effect !
Buck Owens did a much better version of this. It is really funny with his drummer Jerry Wiggins, at the time married to the beautiful Susan Raye, doing the some side voices.

I don't think it was the original lead singer.
