    One of the underrated moments for me regarding Anakin’s feelings/interactions with the Jedi Council come in the Phantom Menace. When the Council refuses to let Anakin join the order, there is a quick closeup of Jake Lloyd’s face where you can see the anger and confusion. To me, it has always represented the seed of distrust that manifested between Anakin and the Council. Because now, this child feels unwelcome, feels like a burden. And as he grows in the Order, there is always some part of him that knows that some Jedi, like Mace, don’t think he belongs there. And Anakin will strive to become the best, most powerful Jedi ever to prove them wrong. And in this pursuit, he begins to lose himself to the dark side.

    that brings up a question i always had - Is it possible or has there ever been any character in SW history (whether in tv, movies, books, comics, video games etc.) who chose the dark path over light to actually achieve whatever goal, ever ended up contented or happy? does the choice of using dark side abilities as a conduit for their passions automatically make them evil? lets talk about it folks...

  • @kaseykey7378

    @kaseykey7378

    @@joeg6478 I don’t know of anyone who went dark side and everything worked out well. But I never got into the old EU (Legends) material. Personally, I don’t feel like you can use the dark side and end up happy. George Lucas used to talk about the idea of the dark side is acting out of selfishness and personal power. I think Sith/Dark-side users can get pleasure from getting what they want, but it is fleeting and they search for new power to obtain. Like an addict, they get a hit after winning but it soon fades and they are searching for the next score. I just don’t think someone who using the dark side will ever be satisfied and content.

  • @joeg6478

    @joeg6478

     @Kasey Key - i tend to agree Anakin legit believed he could wield the dark side as a tool to save his wife and overthrow Sidious yet when he actually attained it, he instead tried to murder her, served under his sworn enemy for the rest of his life and eventually forgot her and his kids even existed. Yoda even told Luke during his training the dark side aint more powerful than the light so i don't think it's biggest allure is really about "unnatural" power, that's just a side effect. The chief seduction of the dark side that tempted Dooku, Anakin and all the rest, seems to be Control. Control of bringing "order" to the galaxy, control of people's actions, control of life over death.

    In my honest opinion Anakin brought balance to the force in 2 key ways: 1. The balance of duty and love. Both sides lacked true compassion and love that Anakin showed Luke and in Legends he allowed Jedi to have families and encouraged Love 2. He removed politics from Jedi. Luke’s new order wasn’t tied to the New Republic like the old order was.

  • @Torente32

    By defeating Sidious, Anakin does restore balance as the evil sith has lost all of its power. But because of sneaky ways of the sith, they always leave some backup plan to help restore power to the Sith if the main plan fails. I don't like how it's being looked at since Palpy returned in ep 9 that Anakin didn't restore balance to anything, and that the only thing Anakin did was express his love to Luke by saving him. That really lowballs Anakins character.

    Dave filoni tells us a poignant part of the jedis downfall is that they lost their way, and should have been compassionate and Qui Gon Gin was the only one who understood this. We see this in the dual of the fates, which is the fate of Anakin, understanding that you can love selflessly without loving possessively. so in that sense the order fails Anakin, and in turn Anakin falls due to not being able to let go of padme, his mother, Ahsoka etc.. because attachments are for bidden, but not love, something the Jedi had forgotten.

    Padme was AMAZING in The Clone Wars. The level of impact she had on how things unfold was unbelievable. She almost screwed Palpatine's plan with democracy and hard work. She really was great. But I guess every character was great. They did an incredible work of giving way more depth to the characters. Anakin went from being seen pretty much like a brat in II and III to a complex character with flaws. The clones were pretty interesting and, as they said, the show totally humanized them. For me this is the best SW content between movies and shows, despite sometimes having a little bit of a childish touch. I wish they did a show like this one about the old republic, they would be able toshow so much depth about that era.

    When Ahsoka first came on the scene, the things people hated about her I loved. Her spunkiness and sass back at Anakin was exactly what he needed. About Anakin and love. It's not so much love that the Jedi were against, it was attachment. The fear of losing. That was what the Jedi warned against. And that was what Anakin's downfall. It's also what Palpatine exploited so masterfully. The real thing that caused the Jedi's downfall was that they didn't recognize that many of their rules and dogma were based on fear. Speaking of the Father, Son, and Daughter, before I ever saw that episode, I wrote a fanfic that was kind of a Star Wars style Dicken's Chrismas Carol in which Anakin went through a series of lessons with a spirit/family, and the people who read it said how much it mirrored that episode... and I had never seen it at the time I wrote it! When I finally saw the episode, I was, damn, am I psychic or something? LOL

    Damn when Eric said "I'd do terrible things for my wife", I felt that. Freshman year of high school, I found a spot that was across the street from my high school, but out of the line for the pick-up. One day a group of older kids started harassing me and would not leave me alone. They didn't put a hand on me but we're verbally harassing me. I told my Dad after the second day of it happening and he told me to point them out the next time he came if they were still there. The next day they were still around and when I got in the car I started to tear up and pointed them out. The next thing I knew, my Dad was advancing on them with speed I'd never seen before. He yelled and screamed at them in such a terrifying way I thought he be locked up for life. He never touched them btw. Then he calmly got back into the car and drove me home. From that day on I learned that my family would have my back no matter what and that my Dad would be ready to go to prison for my safety, he literally told the harassers he would! I was never bothered again.

    43:00 Yes and I've been thinking for a while that Jedi and even the Sith, but specifically the Jedi have been getting weaker and weaker as time goes on. From The Old Republic they were fighting like crazy, displaying really skillful in sync fights. In the prequels they only had a some of that. In the original trilogy they didn't have any of that. And in the sequels they had a pinch, but their force abilities are different and coming back to their roots from the old days. Force Projection is so cool. 1:03:14 That's really cool. I actually teared up seeing him get a medal for his help. He's still a trooper even at that age. 1:08:27 Dooku is the Lord of finesse. 1:11:19 Savage is my 2nd favorite Sith with Maul being my 1st favorite. Savage was awesome and brutal.

    Was Palpatine actually hundreds of years old, though? I assume he was an ordinary middle-age human in Episode 1. Maybe early fifties? I dont know if it's a theory that's already out there in the ether (since I dont follow theory channels or anything) but I think Darth Maul coming back is more mystical and tied to the events upsetting the balance on Mortis, which is a place that reflects the state of the wider galaxy. Rather than the more mundane idea that he survived being halved, survived the fall, literally crawled without a lower body from deep below Naboo, commandeered a ship, navigated to a random planet and sat there quietly without being detected for a couple of decades. It's pretty interesting to me that nobody knew he was alive (the Jedi, Palpatine, Mother Talzin) until suddenly all the relevant factions seem to be able to sense his presence all at once? Maybe Maul didnt survive The Phantom Menace. Then Anakin nudges cosmic events further towards the dark on Mortis, and suddenly here's a darkside wildcard thrown into the mix with vibes that he kinda came back "wrong" or broken/insane somehow from the process. And he has The Son's voice, much like how Ahsoka being "brought back" by The Daughter has left her with this connection to her. I know Star Wars doesn't really do branching timelines, but at the time Revenge of the Sith aired there was no question of Anakin having a secret apprentive (let-alone one that was still alive), or Maul being alive. It may really be the Mortis arc and the intervention of The Daughter and The Son respectively that in-universe led us to a new continuity.

    Great discussion! Eric is such a Star wars expert, I love hearing him talk about Star Wars! I enjoy the Normies reactions, but have stayed away from their Star Wars reactions because they tend to be a bit sarcastic, but this helped me understand they like Star wars too.

    I loved this deep dive. Many things I've thought about Star Wars expressed so well by you guys, and new things to think about too. In the space of this video, I've become more open about the sequels. While the sequels execution might have been major crap, some of the things discussed here has me thinking from a different view now. I'm a little more interested moving forward from the sequels. Hoping for more collabs/deep dives like these for other shows too.

    That’s how I see it too :) It’s a shame that the sequels had some glaring issues, but let’s explore the themes it showed and let’s look forward to what else can be done with these characters if they’re handled well

    I loved the clones as early as attack of the clones in 2002. I was seven. As early as 2005, and I saw the order 66 scene, that scene made me cry. I wondered if any clones disobeyed the order. I made fan fiction about clones who disobeyed the order

    I think the answer to a lot of these questions just come down to that it wasn’t thought of at the time, like how palpatine gets grabbed by vader, why high republic jedi were cooler than movie Jedi alot of it just wasn’t considered at the time

    1:12:00 One thing that I remember, I dunno who said it, but Rex of all the clones, he is the one who’s fight style and features are the closest or the clone who is more similar to Jango Fett And other thing that I never thought about is what Aaron says: “if the Jedi were suppose to protect and bring balance to the force and the universe as keepers of the peace, why there’s no Jedi on the separatist side, or the planets and the council of the separatist” the only things that I can think about it is that in certain point of the story, the Jedi and the separatist have a disagree (maybe produce by darth plaegis or other Sith Lords) in order to weak the Jedi trough the people. Other thing that I can think off is that whit growing of the government of the republic, the planets see Jedi intervention no longer necessary and that idealism push them to be refuge of the republic in their capital. Either way, if there’s some Jedi on the separatist side, I dunno how Dooku would be consider, maybe he would hide his sith characteristics and play a more political role like palpatine did, in order to gain the trust of those Jedi, but at the end, the critical point of the Jedi was to play neutral and don’t get involved taking decisions themselves. At the end, the villain win when the hero don’t do nothing

    just to correct eric on one little thing. Palpatine was born 84 BBY son in Return he would be around 88 years old

    The dark empire line of comics is in my opinion the best way they could have handled a palpatine return it literally would have been 3times more entertaining then what we got with episode 9

    Eric tends to use his as a point of reference during the after reaction discussion, in a an organic way to to the topic. Suraj tends to throw it into the middle of the reaction in either cynical or meme way.

    49:48 Makes we want to see a What If situation for that crucial point in Star Wars history. Whoever lived through that fight, determines Anakin's fate. What if Qui-Gon had lived? What if Qui-Gon had lived, but Obi-Wan died? What if Maul had killed them both?

    Yall think Dooku bank rolls the CIS lol, no way. The Separatist Council is made up of 8 different corporations that are doing everything from financing to army building. The CIS has a governmental system that allows each system to independently represent themselves and make changes depending on current events. Hence the name the Confederacy of Independent Systems.
