Lisa, you and John did a fantastic job on this video!! I can't wait to see the rest of the series!! My sweet JJ, Jaws Junior, passed the other day. Before I buy another Betta (Bay-tuh, yeah- I know), I want to tear down the entire tank, remove the Ludwigia shrub growing up the blinds and across the counter, and start over! Once I'm settled, I'll be picking out one of your boys! Thanks and Best fishes to you and John!

I am 75 years old and first got into the hobby at age 9 for just about three years. I picked it up again about three years ago and have been rocking it ever since. On the topic of lighting, you can have the light on for 12 hours a day, for example, if you divide the photo periods with a dark spell of 2 to 4 hours half way through the day. This allows the plants to go into a brief rest and the water to build up co2.

I wish I had used more patience years ago when I first started my first tank. I used so many unnecessary chemicals when it was going through its first of many other nitrogen cycles. Maybe you all can do a video on the do's and don'ts when cleaning a planted aquarium for some of the newbies ? I know how, but maybe there's some who don't? Thanks again you two!! 🥰

I would suggest that those wanting to set up a larger tank go for a marine ready tank. You place a sump tank down below the tank and tank water overflows back into the sump and it gets pumped back up to the tank. This setup skims the water surface keeping it oxygenated. The real beauty of the set up is you can place one or more filter socks down in the sump. You can get them in common sizes of 50 to 300 microns. The 200 micron socks will even filter algae out of the water leaving it crystal clear. As far as filtration goes shoot for three to four times the tank volume in flow per hour.

A little quick fix when you have a lot of really small particles floating around is to use Acurel-F. It makes the particles stick together so your filter can catch them. It will make your water cloudy for about an hour or two then it becomes crystal clear. This is only a temp fix and something I only do occasionally. When I do it, its usually a sign that I need to clean/replace my polishing pad. In other words, the pad is clogged and can't get the super small particles, but when Acurel-F makes them clump together the pad can grab them.

When I first got my tank, I had major issues with ammonia and the KH,GH & PH. The two best things I did was added crushed coral (AKA Aragonite) and I bought a UV Filter. Within a few days, the ammonia was down to zero and the other parameters came into line. My water has been crystal clear since. When it starts to look a little foggy, I plug the UV Filter back in and by the next day, crystal clear again!!

My tanks are established and always crystal clear. However after adding Pristine it glistens like diamonds. I also believe, from experience, Pristine helps get rid of plant/fish waste if there's any lying around. Not a substitute for regular water changes/maintenance though!

Love this! Aguariums, like all pets and living things we own, have to be responsibly cared for. As you just pointed out with truth and humor, don't get any living thing ( dog, cat, fish, bird, plant), ANY living thing and bring it home, and not expect to care for it. Please do some research, ask questions of people with experience, and there's a great thing called U tube where lots of experienced people are ready and willing to give you information about caring for whatever living thing you bring home. Find out the care involved before you buy something. Thank you KG Tropicals again for Truth and humor.
