Gimli in the books really wasn't comedic relief. He was more of a warrior poet. The one comedic thing that they did keep was the keeping score of how many enemies they kill between Legolas and Gimli.

There's a key part of the development of their friendship in the book that isn't in the film. The conversation about the glittering caves, where Gimli talks about preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of a cave system the way the elves would a forest, when Legolas assumed dwarves would want to mine it out. I get why it doesn't fit in the movie but it really shows that side of Gimli well and brings them together over something more than fighting together

The momentousness of Galadriel giving him the locks of her hair, while retained in the film, is easy to miss as well, as it was painted in somewhat comical color. In the First Era, when Fëanor the master smith demanded one lock from Galadriel as to remake the Trees of Light Melkor had despoiled (by urging Ungoliant to suck light from them) Galardiel, foreseeing Fëanor's arrogance and jealousy & the ruin he was to bring onto _Noldor,_ refused. Gimli, however, did not yearn her locks for their utility and power, but only as token to remember her beauty. His sincere request moved Galadriel, who then did the unthinkable by giving Gimli not one but three locks of hers. Gimli, a dwarf, probably oblivious, was granted something the greatest artisan of elven history was denied, since his request was without greed for power. I think this is well tuned with Tolkien's overall message.

3:49 is actually quite an interesting question and a major fuck up of the movie. In the lore Sauron fights Elendil and Gil-galad at the same time. They both die in the process but they are still able to incapacitate and damage Saurons physical form. Sauron is overthrown and weakened which enables Isildur to cut Ring of Saurons hand with the broken Narsil. Saurons spirit flees after that, vanishing his body. There is no explosion but it's more cinematic I guess. In the movie Saurons just yeets Elendil with his mace, instantly killing him, there's no Gil-galad (just a few shots of him but not fighting Sauron directly) and Sauron extends his hand like an idiot so that Isildur can conveniently cut it off. I assume that Peter Jackson wanted to imply that Sauron was about to burn Isildur with his hand like he supposedly does with Gil-galad in the books but it just doesn't work in the movie for me, like Sauron exposes his biggest weakness just like that and Sauron is not an moron, he's actually a very cunning intellectual in the books, arrogant but crazy resourceful, cunning and NOT an idiot who would go down like that... You guys should check out what Sauron does in the first, second and third age of Middle-earth, he has a very vast history, from being the right hand man of Melkor (the ACTUAL dark lord and primary antagonist in Tolkiens work), to his final defeat at the end of the War of the Ring. After his defeat in the prologue of the Fellowship of the Ring he actually regains a physical body, Gollums describes him as some demonic entity with nine fingers. After the destruction of the Ring he is nothing more than a cloud that coukd cause you a depressing thoughts. As a Maiar he technically can't die so his spirit lingers on. The burning eye on top of Barad-dûr is actually an invention of Peter Jackson, too which I absolutely love. In the books the burning eye is the symbol of the Orcs and Uruks of Mordor. FYI, I love the movies, they are my all time favorite movies but they still screw up in them.

  • @TheMchunney74

    @TheMchunney74

    15 сағат бұрын

I would say that since they were only given a finite amount of time to do that beginning in Fellowship, Jackson just tried to establish that Sauron sees the world of men as weak. He stomps on narsil and shatters it and bends down to isildur to probably toy with him before he killed him or to further intimidate the army behind him by killing the son of the king. He didn’t expect isildur to use the shards of narsil to fight back. Like you said, he can be arrogant and with how the studios at the time were, they were probably on edge green lighting a project where 3 movies were filmed all at once and, at the time, was the most expensive undertaking for movie making, blowing past Titanic.

Came with a landscape board and probably 50-100 pieces or something? All I remember doing with it was lining all the good guys and bad guys up and being like, "Dude the orcs are so fucking cool." Never knew they were called hex figures, though; always called it, "That LoTR boardgame thing-y." Grammar edit:

To provide some context on things: Sauron started life as a bodiless spirit before the world was created, alongside a whole bunch of others. theyy can survive having their bodies destroyed, it's just unpleasant.. Unless apparently they decide to be super evil or something. Not quite sure if that was a problem for Sauron in either book or movie form before the ring was made, but I lean towards it being so. once he has the One Ring idea he pours a bunch of himself into it. This in turn somehow amplifies his already considerable power, though it's not an end all be all. He's by no means invincible with the Ring, and can be defeated with it. Which happened twice to his armies whenever Numenor AKA Atlantis AKA where the ancestors of the Dunedain (Aragorn and Boromir and other Gondorians) are from. After tricking Numenor into suicide by God, he managed to escape back to Mordor only to find that Gondor had popped up on his doorstep. This made him very cross and started a lengthy "Get off my lawn" war that culminates in the Last Alliance of Men and Elves - pretty much everyone who hated him versus all his servants and armies. Durin's Folk aka Khazad-dum aka the future Moria even pitched in with a troop of Dwarven warriors. With the vicious battle at Dagorlad (the Dead Marshes in the future, where the ghost lights are), Sauron ended up trapped for ten years inside Barad-dur despite repeated attempts by him to get the Last Alliance to fuck off. Until at last he manages to escape and head for Mount Doom. There he gets cornered and it is here that the movie prologue occurs. Now, here is where things get interesting. In the movie, Sauron of course has his finger sliced off, and explodes without the One Ring. Or something. BUT, in the book it's not as clear as to how Sauron is defeated, only that he kills Elendil (and also the High King Gil-galad by burning him alive) in the process. It's implied that he is basically killed the old fashioned way, in a sense. It is then that Isildur takes the Ring as repayment for the many personal losses he suffered in his long battle with Sauron, still by cutting the ring off. Elrond and another elf are both present for this, being the only two besides Isildur to be able to stand up to Sauron along side the high kings. They advised him to destroy it, and he says no. None of them go to mount doom in this part. the end result is the same - Sauron loses ring, but survives because the Ring isn't destroyed. Orcs ambush Isildur's entourage and slaughter them. Isildur dies, ring is lost.

the way this game is set up is that Aragorn was the jack of all trades, Gimli was a tank, and Legolas is the fast ranged fighter. Gimli unfortunately suffers from being slow compared to the other two, which lets enemies smack him around. The hitstun is real. You're also meant to replay levels as the other two to level them up. There's no shared moves in this game, while in Return of the King there are. They cost more but they unlock moves for EVERYONE as they level! You can also unlock instakill attacks in both games. They require a button sequence but they're insanely powerful.

In the intro Sauron poured all his power into the one ring to rule them all along with his spirit. His body during that battle was just basically a husk and the ring is giving him all the power. So as it was cut off it surged causing his husk to disintegrate and explode and thus the ring survives so does the spirit, hence why it betrayed Isildur and why it’s referred to have a “will” of its own. Virginity has served me well finally.

IDK about the movies, but in the books he is actually killed fighting the king of the elves and the king of men (isldurs dad) but they both die in the effort. Isildur then comes upon the scene and cuts the ring off his finger to keep as a trophy. So he was already defeated.

The way it’s been described to me is the ring basically acts as a Tether between the realm that his spirit lies and middle earth. So that’s why whenever someone puts the ring on they disappear this is why, when Frodo wears the ring he sees the Naz ghoul for what they truly are. Gandolf and the other wizards are similar in that aspect as well, which is how Gandolf essentially dies and comes back but it takes him a while to remember himself as Gandolf the Grey

I still have the top trumps cards. My friend and i played it on and off for years. Sometimes when we had downtime at school. Also at school, I checked out the movie covers books. The girls behind the desk started going crazy, when they saw Legolas got one. Squeals and all. Never knew about the hex stuff.

Sauron's power is connected to the one ring, he imbuded it with his will and basically parts of his soul, and made it so he can controll the power of all the other great rings that have been created by the ring smiths of Eregion. When the ring was cut of, his phisical form was destroyed, he ragained after couple thousand years, but without the ring he can't regain his full power.

If the Phantom Menace on PS1 could be given a PS5 port, then I see no reason why Two Towers and Return of the King can't be given ports either. Or better yet, we could hope that these games could be remade with updated graphics and gameplay, maybe even let us play more characters in Two Towers, I still remember how bummed I was when I couldn't play as Gandalf, especially since he was my favorite character in those movies.

I've never played this, but it's still nostalgic as hell. It has a very "PS2" look and feel to it. Like, even if you didn't tell me ahead of time that it was a PS2 game, one look and I'd have just assumed it was.

Sauron getting the ring cut off doesn't destroy his body in the book, he is killed by Elendil (the father of Isildur) and the Elven king Gil-Galad, and Isildur cuts the finger from his corpse

It's insane now to think that there was a time where EA games based on movies were top tier. The Two Towers, Return of the King, and From Russia With Love were three of my favourite games growing up, and the latter two were made by the people who would go on to become Visceral.

Answer. He doesn't die. Sauron put most of his spirit in the ring. Cutting it from his hand didn't kill him in the book. He was killed then the ring was taken from his corpse. Movie reason : plot is better for screen this way
