The 08 is definitely my favourite British Rail diesel, and this was really interesting to find out. Intriguing how they used their shells for multiple different testing platforms.

they are currently experimenting with one at the severn valley railway by putting a hydrogen engine in it to see if they can viably turn diesel locomotives environmentally friendly. here is the link if you are interested kzread.info/dash/bejne/g6Nl3NJtm9G5o5M.html

Netherlands also used similar type of class 08 after ww2 the Nederlandse spoorwegen (ns) bought from the war department 10 class 11 and later they even ordered new ones they had 125 of them and they became iconic shutters by the ns they are still in service by other cargo companies still today
After Sodor Ironworks Number 1 “ARRY” and Number 2 “BERT” commandeered and destroyed Gordon’s snowblower in 1967, the Express engine advised Sir Charles topham hatt to buy and rebuild the two diesels to replace the snow-machine that had been reduced to a smouldering heap the month prior. Gordon, when interviewed, would go on to defend this action and think of it as a “Buisness Expense”, he then glanced sparingly towards the duo of rusted diesel shunters in the old siding…”

Even today Network Rail's main classes of snowplough are converted from old steam loco tender frames or built on redundant Class 40 bogies. We do have a snowblower or 2. Originally one for Scotland and one for Network Southeast in BR days, but now they are both based in Scotland.

Converted from STEAM LOCO tender frames?!? Now that is morbid! Imagine being a retiree living happily in your assisted-living community, when all of a sudden some arsehole walks past using your dead brother's bones as a snow shovel. That's how it feels to be a preserved steam engine seeing those snowplows.

There's also a Eurostar Class 08, with an extended front and rear, and it even has special Eurostar styled couplings. It's number is 08948 if you're curious.
I do enjoy when you do reel railway niche history. We still have a class 08 in my town. He doesn't do much as not much freight gets stopped at my station but he comes to lend a hand every now and again.
This proves that the Class 08s were guinea pigs. I never knew that a few were converted to snowplows. While you did say it was reported that these were terrible snowplows, is still like to see a OO scale model of one!
as someone that lives in Doncaster this really interesting. there's a class 08 that lives on an abandoned branch line 2 mins from me

Nice and informative video! Also can you make a video on gas turbine locomotives?
D3035 was the (wrong) number that Triang-Hornby used on the side of their R.152 0-6-0 Armstrong-Whitworth diesel electric shunting loco model, between 1965 until the model's withdraw in 1976. It came in both green and blue British Railways liveries.

Cool! I was trying to find some information on these for my own upcoming video, but i couldn't find anything about them
Seen it done with a tender, never a locomotive. Tender to plow conversions don’t seem too uncommon, issue here by the sound of it was ballasting issues among other things.
first modified as class 09s to go faster then turned into human centipedes and now turned into snowploughs

Why didn't BR simply retrofit a few existing class 08s to have snowplows on the front while keeping their traction system? TTTE learned this lesson by making merch of Diesel with a snowplow...
Honestly, this concept could make a pretty tragic Thomas story. A group of diesels that simply wanted to be really useful and really revolutionary as centers for their railway. But then one day, unceremoniously, they are scheduled to be scrapped. Then they got a second opportunity at life, but learn it will be as a snowplow. They are indignant that they’ve been downgraded to that of a glorified truck, but at least they will still be revolutionary pieces of technology, right? But then after one misstep, one that wasn’t even their fault but that of their designers, they were all sentenced to death. Funny how simply personifying an engine can make an embarrassing failure turn into a tragedy.
@ciarangleeson2880
Жыл бұрын
Not to mention it sounds really lazy and wimpy of the designers to only test one engine once and immediately call it quits after the first mishap!
@ciarangleeson2880
4 ай бұрын
I think it would be a story worth telling, though. Maybe instead of being scrapped, D6509 could be brought to Sodor, be fixed up at the Dieselworks, and could be used for clearing snowdrifts, landslides, and other obstructions on the line. He could also tell the other engines about his tragic past, how he and his siblings were mistreated and seen as a failure, how he was blamed for a slip-up that was not his fault, how it cost his siblings their lives, and how it left him with survivors guilt. In the long run, it could also help give Diesel and the Ironworks twins some character development, and make them realise that dieselisation is not as revolutionary as they once thought.

Just a question,why didn’t they leave the diesels running with snowploughs.that would’ve solved the bouncing problem plus leaving the engine alone.If you could can you find an answer?
I know one of those used to be stored in Selhurst rail depot
The community post (I just realized I’m very dumb at to not put it there) reminded me of the BR Class 10, which is just a Class 08 with different gear so it could go faster. And as the 08’s were called ‘Gronks’, that lead to the 10’s being called ‘Super Gronks’. Which, in my opinion, is the best nickname of any loco, cause it sounds like a shitty off-brand super hero
@Salvacottontail

Why did they not just put a plow on the 08's as they were? The problems were they took crap off, leave them on and just slap a plow...Solved.

Just give a FUNCTIONING class 08 a plough and call it a day.
after watching this, I feel like they would've served better if they kept their self propelled components. I mean, had they not removed said parts, they wouldn't have had such a high center of gravity and the counterweights wouldn't have caused it to bounce off the rails had the rods been left attached. plus with the components left in they could effectively be drive-able snowplows this is all in my own opinion tho
@ciarangleeson2880

I don’t understand why they would remove so many parts when they could have just slapped the snowploughs on them and called it a day. Things might have gone much smoother, then.
