+kingofallwhites , hes referring to the dispute about how the song was credited, etc.,, between Topper Headon, the drummer of the clash before Terry Chimes, & the rest of The Clash, due to the fact that Topper claims he wrote the riff, & then after he was kicked out of the band the song became a large hit with Terry Chimes as the drummer of the band, etc.,

I always turn the treble up to listen to the "tingly notes".. like chic on piano (age 14)

I took piano lessons for 3 1/2 years when I was a kid. I hated it because my parents wouldn't let me ride my motorcycle until I practiced at least an hour on the piano every day. That was the first effect. The second was I learned how to hotwire my bike rather quickly. Necessity is a mother right? Now that I'm old and grey I sometimes wish I'd stuck with my practicing. I still love the piano and the beautiful sounds it makes. This song is intriguing due to its sort of vibrato quick succession of key strikes in certain areas. The whole reason I sought out this video was I wanted to hear the piano part without the drums, guitars and vocals, to assess the complexity of the keyboard section. It did not disappoint. All in all it's a great song and a rather more complex keyboard than it, at first, appears to be. Damn you Sharif, just let the kids play.

I believe you mean syncopation by the "vibrato quick succession of key strikes"
I love this crazy casbah jive.
Drummer Topper Headon played this piano and drums and bass at Electric Ladyland in NYC October 1981. Topper was a Jazz musician prior to joining the band in early April 1977. He wrote their biggest hit.
Tribute to the greatness of Topper Headon.

Topper wrote 80% of the song. He did the bass, drums, percussion and piano by himself as the rest of the band was late coming into the studio.

This is definitely transposable... the tricky part is the intro where two pianos are playing at the same time... though I suppose you could arrange it to play it on one piano. Thanks!

Absolutely. The great thing about music and instruments is that while there is endless theory, there are only so many possible notes and chords to work with so that one with experience and a good ear could easily teach themselves to play this with this isolated track. I have done so myself and have raised all the eyebrows at Guitar Center when I sit down on a set of keys.

This clearly shows one major piece of the Clash recipe that was lost when Topper was fired by Joe. You take talent of this caliber away from any band, and it changes everything. They were never the same again live without Topper. And definitely never the same in the studio without his style and ability. Mick knew it. Bernie and Joe blew it. It’s that simple.

He had become an addict. Instead of taking some time off to get him fixed, they sacked him and replaced him. They had been going non stop for 5 years or so by this time and needed a break anyway. Their manager Bernie was a source of conflict within the group.

Thanks for posting this. I actually had no idea that there was an overdub of the piano on that intro hook. You can make it out when the riff transitions into the chords for the verses and the piano is playing that awesome octave-blues style trill to fade out. It would be difficult to play, considering the octave-blues trill and the vamped chords are both played in the same octave on the piano. He may have let that raga drop, but it was dropped smoothly with soul. (You can also hear some additional piano overdubbing on the other choruses, too.) Cheers!

Absolutely phenomenal! That just took me back to the early 80's and literally gave me goosebumps. However, the bongos in the middle kid of ruined it. Still, a good piece.

First of all it's non-profit (at least on my end) since I don't monetise any of these videos, secondly it would fall under educational since the reason I post these is to show some of the layers in a song to people and to help those who prefer to learn the parts by ear themselves and to be able to play those parts closer to the originals.
