The Clash: Complete Control: 1977

Музыка

The Greatest Band ever with a live performance of Complete Control
.Writers: Mick Jones, Joe Strummer
Producer: Lee "Scratch" Perry
Released: July '79, Epic
Non-single
The Clash were hardcore reggae fans, so it was natural they would want to work with legendary dub producer Perry. But the resulting single wasn't dub at all - it was the Clash's toughest, noisiest punk anthem, with Mick Jones cranking the guitar to ear-bleeding levels. "Complete Control," a U.K. hit in the fall of 1977, was appended to the American version of the band's debut album.

The thin sound from mick and chopped chords from joe with pauls Rickenbacker gives the band such a classic sound from the 70's punk setting it apart from any genre which many rely heavily on thick bass to fill the gap but here they little density of sound creates a great performance in my opinion by the only band that mattered

If you listen to this performance with your Bootleg Ears...you get it. They were playing very low volume on the set of a TV studio. During this performance they did an interview and 3 (yes, 3 songs). They actually played very well. Joe doesn't start playing his guitar until after the first verse of the song. 1977 was the Year of the Clash. All of their best songs were written and released during 1977. City of the Dead, The Prisoner, Complete Control, Gates of the West...Capitol Radio. They have immense cred just from 1977.

Topper and Paul were mostly actually a really great rhythm section, especially considering Paul's novice status as a bassist. But Topper was really the glue that held this band together, the only one of the four that was rock solid, allowing the rest of em to fuck up without it all falling apart.

What's great about this version is you can hear each instrument clearly. It's totally stripped of all the Lee Perry production that invites thoughts of echoes from the basement at the end of eternity. The single version is great, perhaps my favorite of all the raw punk-era Clash songs, but it's nice to see and hear how they played this tune absent the studio effects.

I miss the "I don't trust you" part of the vocals, which is so important to the recorded version of the song. Maybe it wasn't added until after this was shot? Still, great to see an intimate early live performance of one of the Clash's best and most important true punk songs. Yeah, so the sound isn't stellar and it's not very loud. Also not drenched in reverb like the record. A lot of punk bands had shit equipment back in the day because they had no money, and this is often what live shows sounded like anyway. Everyone's used to a wall of highly engineered sound these days.

Mick is another casualty of the infamous Ampeg V-4. Yeah, it sounds great cranked up all the way. But it's A VERY LOUD AMP. So you'll play some video-studio thing like this, and you'll have to turn it down to like 2 or 3. And you sound like the backing track of a frickin' Beach Boys single. Poor Mick -- carry on, Mick!

This is almost certainly the first TV performance of the song. Note the lines: 'your my guitar hero' & 'I don't trust you/why should you trust me....''are missing. The Clash were never renowned (then) for agonising over their work, so this is very much a work in progress. Maybe why the sound is mixed so differently? Also, note that later, Joe would not play a note on this track; here his contribution at the bridge is astonishing....
